I would like to add that a wing collar shirt only goes with a seamless / sized bow tie. If you wear an adjustable bow tie with a wing collar the clasp will be visible. Although I have a tailored bow tie and could go with a wing collar I still prefer turn down collars. There is also a shirt style with textured fabric and a fly front which is what I prefer. I've got two of them. One is tailored and the other one is Turnbull & Assers Casino Royale shirt.

I’ve got a pleated evening shirt which I’m going to wear with my blue-velvet dinner jacket to my grandfather’s oxford ball, and switch out an evening scarf for a scarf in the clan tartan. Looks casually elegant, like you’re not trying too hard, which is exactly what I like.

As tradition goes I really think the first shirt is the best. Black tie should be pretty formal.

Great video! Since I never ever weared a tuxedo, didn't have a clue of all these shirts. When the party gets heated, and you take off your jacket. Maybe the only one suitable is the last one.

Great content, Brian. You missed out the marcella front shirt which does not have the pleating effect of the plissé front. Second point, in spite of the provision to take studs, my separate shirt studs don't fit very well with the existing shirt buttons still in place on my Turnbull & Asser dress shirt. Is it normal to remove the existing buttons in order to fit shirt studs?

0:19 I cannot take advice from you seriously when almost all your suits seem to have the dreaded shoulder divot. It's glaring, I'm not sure how you/an experienced tailor have not corrected this. The drape does not look seamless and the divots are really difficult to ignore.

When do gentlemen wear their bow tie under a pinpoint collared shirt’s collar?
@TheJTMcDaniel2 жыл бұрын
I generally recommend against the wing collar option. First, it makes you look like a waiter. Second, it's damned near impossible to find a fitted black bow tie these days, and you should never wear an adjustable tie with a wing collar. The only sources I've found in the last few years are in the UK.

In the US is the only place where wing colar is worn with black tie. Its supposed to be for strictly white tie. Idk how we in the states decided that, but its pretty interesting but makes sense because white tie doesn't really exist here.

I have a very weird question : is it OK to wear like a wing collar and a cravat with a tuxedo or is that too old timey?
@Lensmaster12 жыл бұрын
A cravat is not worn with a tuxedo. It has never been a part of the look. Black tie grew out of white tie as a less formal look. White tie has a bow tie and black tie kept that style.

Nice video Brian, I always love your videos! The only thing I would say here is that the wing collar shirt is for me only aloud for white tie and morning dress. In addition if people will use the wing collar for white tie the cuffs have to be single cuffs and not double cuffs.

The wing collar and white tie shirts are different, as you mention. Here is an actual 100-percent white tie shirt (which also needs to be fastened with a stud at the throat as well): hespokestyle.com/product/white-tie-wing-collar-shirt/

Nice video. But I don't think I'll ever be in need of this haha. Something you will disagree with - I don't like dark blue/navy and black together. To me, it just disturbs the eyes. I think similar for other very dark colors with black, with the exception of grey/charcoal. Cheers!

There are tuxedo shirts out there which are closed by buttons, and have an extra placket over them to hold the studs, which are purely decorative. I prefer these to the shirts with no buttons, and are closed by the studs themselves so that they are functional. More than once with this second style of shirt, one or more studs have fallen out, letting the shirt fall open. Very embarrassing. Whenever possible, get the first style of shirt.

I appreciate and typically agree with almost all of your advice, but have to part on this video. "Black tie" means black tie, especially for your wedding. There is a proper dress code, it's not the high school prom. Wing-tip collars are pretty much always bad look at this level of formality, never wear notched lapels, only peaked or shawl, and ALWAYS wear a waist covering of some type.
@hespokestyle2 жыл бұрын
This is not a video about Black Tie. This is a video about different tuxedo shirts for different dress codes.

@mph72822 жыл бұрын
@@hespokestyle I get that it's a video about shirt styles. But "tuxedo" is the suit for "black tie" dress code, and suggesting that tuxedo shirts are compatible with certain elements inappropriate for the dress code undermines the message that it's special. Just my thoughts, which I'm sure mean exactly squat to everyone else.
@Lensmaster12 жыл бұрын
I don't wear them myself and don't recommend most men try it but Wing color shirts can be worn with black tie. If doing so everything must be at the top of the formality range, peek lapel single breasted, waist coat, the shirt should be marcella. Most men, because they don't often wear a tuxedo, are better off with the standard lay down collar.
@didamnesia35752 жыл бұрын
@@mph7282 hmm, I wonder why many types of tux shirts are made, including pink and blue being made by the likes of Brooks Brothers, that don't conform to your misguided understanding of what a tuxedo can be used for if you're correct. It's a mystery for sure. Or... you're wrong, and there's no mystery at all. You're merely misunderstanding/have misconstrued black tie and tuxedo. There's also a thing called white tie, and morning ware. Enjoy learning about it

You're wrong. It can be worn with a tux. There is a very specific white tie shirt, if you want to get technical (which it seems you do).
