River Phoenix was never attached to this movie. He just loved the book and at one point said he would like to play the part if the movie was ever adapted. That doesn't count as trivia attached to the making of the movie. Every actor has dream roles that they would love to play. That doesn't make them attached to any movie if it gets adapted.

I saw this movie and originally thought: Geez. Heroin is a b*tch. Why would you ever wanna try it in the first place? FWD 11 years later, after being on pain pills for renal cell carcinoma, becoming addicted, eventually leading to heroin itself. Then going through what I did to eventually get sober and seeing the movie again, I can honestly say it accurately depicts what it's like to get off of it. Clean date: 4/15/15

The movie was a strange adaption. It was very melodramatic whereas the book was really funny despite being very bleak. I always felt the movie played a bit too much like a PSA when it should have been something more like Trainspotting. Still a good enough movie but definitely check out the book and its sort-of sequel called Forced Entries: The Downtown Diaries.

Jim Carroll grew up in the 60s. The movie was based in the 90s and it did not click right. They should had done it in the 60s. I've probably read The Basketball Diaries 20 times or more.I'd already read the book several times when the movie came out I never cared for the movie.

it wasn't set in the 60s. It was set in the times it came out i thought it was the 90s but what ever decade it was. I think Jim or Siskel and Ebert complained about this too. It just didn't fit right.@@NostalgiaNeverDies

I wish I didn't empathize with Jim Carroll. At some points I'd rather not be alive than deal with addiction. Recovery is possible from drugs, alcohol, suicide attempts, to overeating! If you struggle just know if I can do this you can as well. Help is available to anyone who wants it. You don't have to struggle alone.
