Gm lifters colapse alot. I wonder if we can see delayed solenoid action with oscilloscope similar to fuel injection pintle humps.

I had a 5.3l in my 2018 Silverado and it had lifter failure at 28,000 miles. Camshaft and lifters had to be replaced. Fortunately it was under warranty but it never drove the same after the fix.

@Justin Gardner Agreed! I traded in for a 6.6l diesel the same year on the 2500HD. All of these 1/2 ton V-8s are BS.

Thanks for the explanation. I wonder if you can check valve timing with a lab scope accurately?

What is the advantage of the "air spring" ? Wouldnt it be just as efficient to let the exhaust valve function ?

Very clear and well made explanation. Thank you.

I'm not sure about the oil being the problem. In our shop we use a dexos approved full synthetic out and they still burn a lot of oil.
@carloscruz73176 жыл бұрын
Josh Staton dedos approved mean nothing full synthetic means nothing. Sludge and it clogs up the vlom and you have oil aeration and failure. Poor oil poor filters causes this.

collapsible lifters. what a joke. This causes more problems than fixes.

I own a small company with 14 gm trucks ranging from 08-18. We have had a change to do allot of oil testing and really put these systems thru it’s paces. I would have to say personally that preventive maintenance and regular scheduled maintenance with a high quality oil and they just work and don’t fail! We have 4 failures on three trucks. It is a bitch and expensive but they trucks lacked good oil and we skimped on the maintenance we diagnosed every single one for a root cause and it’s just a result of poor oil and sludge dislodged and clogging vlom and creating oil pressure issues.

What oil are you using and how often is it changed?
@carloscruz73175 жыл бұрын
Amsoil. Changed every 25,000 miles and filter changed at 15k then at oil change.

My 2018 Corvette 6.2L V8 has this system. Going in and out of cylinder deactivation is smooth and unnoticed. 460 ho and I can get 25 mpg highway driving all day long. The worst mileage I ever got, city suburb driving was 20.5.

It works when it’s new, it’s just trouble when it stops working. Their biggest mistake is that to replace the AFM lifters they have to remove the heads. The repair costs are a problem for owners.

I have 91,000 on my Silverado and sometimes AVERAGE 24 MPG usually 22 or better on the Express way. Haven't had a problem yet..

AFM is short for automatic failure mode. I used mobil one full synthetic with oil changes at 5k and my 2015 Silverado took a dump at 39k.

I have an 06 Impala SS... Let me tell you this DOD AFM is the worst thing GM came up with! Collapsed Lifter and burns oil! When i can afford it im DOD Deleting! Love my car hate this Garbage technology!

@rahrah80764 жыл бұрын
Stanley Crawford timing chain cover needs to come off,change the camshaft,change all the lifters to normal lifters,change the vlom to non vlom..then tune it out with a tuner..all of this usually comes in a big kit

all these new tech are a piece of garbage and a money pet to our pockets because when they fail are super expensive to fix and all the money you save on gas with this "system" you going to give in back to the dealers or mechanic shops, the best way to save money it's take off this crap out of y the engines; if you wan to safe money on gas buy a four cylinder car or truck, and if you need power get a strong v8 truck.
