I think the justification of killing it was that the guy spent more time playing with that stupid toy than he did talking to his team. I'm aware that he used to lock himself in his office for days on end only letting his "yes" men team in to tell him how great his ideas were. Meanwhile the rest of the team were freaking the fuck out over lack of leadership. This was basically the last straw they wanted him to pull his head out of his ass, sadly he never did. I'm a little dissapointed he didn't go into more detail about Milo, Peter did worse than pretend "This is a game that's totally coming out guys!" He also claimed Milo would be able to learn from talking to the player and eventually be able to carry on full conversations, even showing one demo of a woman talking to Milo about being revealed to millions of people... Which Milo actually responded to Pretty much everyone on the Xbox 360 Project Natal board on Gamefaqs was going apeshit over it But of course it was a pre-recorded conversation and heavily scripted... Though to be fair, anyone not gullible enough to think "Yes they just created real AI, and it's just sort of an 'oh btw' from one of the biggest liars in gaming history." Already knew that Still what a massive pair of bollocks on Molyneux to basically claim "Yes I created what is arguably an actual life and am selling it as a video game"

I actually have a tiny bit of insight on the Milo (Project Natal) story, from a convention in the UK Peter attended (Tho this was spoken by one of his former colleagues, not him) Essentially the development kit they had received for the Kinect was roughly 4 times as powerful as what Kinect ended up being. When the final specs for the kinect got released, it pretty much killed the project.
@tyrongkojy7 жыл бұрын
Never got why system publishers do that. You're just shooting yourself in the foot. Just accept it's expensive as balls, and roll the dice. It's what Sony's doing with that joke called VR.

You telling us those games that didn't work on the Kinect did work on one point? You mean steel battalion was suppose to be good???
@Atlink6 жыл бұрын
The original Kinect had the processing hardware built into the device itself originally, but this made the cost of the device almost as much as a 360 alone. Microsoft then decided to make the CPU in the 360 do all the work, and make the whole thing run via software, rather than dedicated hardware. Apparently the original design was a literal 1:1 capture and was buttery smooth.

"The man in the middle" as you say at 13:03, is actually Jack Attridge (@JacksFlavour), presently of Flavourworks. Not Ramsey Bolton, whoever that may be. I've never heard that name before and I followed the failing project from start to finish. Community managers for that project were mostly @MrMatthewAllen and @Monkeythumbz. And I believe it originally was @SamVanTilburgh, you should get in touch with him.

Larry, I find your videos so enjoyable, informative and entertaining. But to hear Theme Hospital playing in the background... you hit the feels spot.

I dunno, in that part about the Tamagochi, Andy Robson seems to be the asshole. Getting upset because Molyneux was playing with a toy. You work for a video game company! As fun as games are (and I play a lot), they are no more serious than the virtual pet. Killing the virtual pet (like hiding it till it starved, or pulling the battery) would have been fine, but physically destroying someone else's property is a dick move.
@IronBlockGames7 жыл бұрын
True, but when you view it that instead of working, he was playing with a toy, and then bragging about it to fed up co-workers.. It be the same for kids in school, theyd be taken away then because you're to be doing work, not playing with a toy. Thus why one worker got so fed up that instead of doing work like he should be, Molyneux was just playing and bragging about a small toy all day, that he opted to give it a death by tea. You go to work, being paid to work to WORK not play with toys, and the excuse of 'video game company' isn't a good one. Just because you're making games, don't mean you get to spend all day playing video games and doing no work. That be like going into a retail job and only trying on cloths all day.
@JohnWilliamNowak7 жыл бұрын
It's impossible to say. Maybe Molyneux was an asshole paying attention to the toy instead of focusing on work; maybe Robson was an asshole for messing with someone else's stuff. Molyneux and Robson are eternally in a state of being neither asshole nor non-asshole, like Like Shroedinger's Cat.
@romshark7 жыл бұрын
Fair enough. Though in school, it would have just been taken away, to be given back at the end of the day (or after a parent-teacher conference). Believe me, I'm not defending Molyneux for playing with it at work. I just feel the other guy handled it badly. I think, when I was a fast-food manager, if I had done something like this to an employee goofing off with a Tamagochi, I would have been fired and/or sued. I don't even want to think of what would happen if I were to break someones smartphone for texting on the job.

I'm no fan of Molyneux, but: 1.) The man plays with a Tamagotchi. The obsession is a bit abornmal, sure, but probably explained by him losing his dog, as you mentioned. 2.) Somebody else kills his virtual pet in a spiteful and petty way. 3.) Peter responds by ... being introspective about the experience and making a great video game out of it. And somehow Molyneux is the asshole here. Sorry, Larry, I normally love your stuff, and I get that you can do a bit of tongue-in-cheek clickbait with your titles. I don't mind the constant ripping on Molyneux in most of your videos, because I agree with you. But this is just a bridge way too far, honestly. It's honestly more than a little disconcerting.

Yeah, I don't get how his partaking in a harmless little pastime that he enjoyed makes him an asshole. A lot of people spend loads of time on their phones and carry them around everywhere; does this make all of these people "cell phone assholes" and justify others taking their phones and destroying them?

I can Change my name I'm going to have to disagree with you guys. If you work in a tech business especially, you need to get your shit together and you need to get your work done on time. When you're all trying to do your jobs and the person who is unfortunately the face of your product is spending all of his time mindlessly playing a grade-schoolers toy to the point of irritating all of his co-workers who need his attention and focus, well that can get pretty fucking annoying. And I would buy that that was the case there. Wherever Peter goes He seems to become the face for that company and its products regardless of what his actual position is. He's also the person who goes out on interviews and makes grandiose promises. Then he goes back to work, locks himself in his office, and mindlessly Taps his tamogotchi 4 hours while the rest of the company Works Long shifts to try and deliver on some of the shit he promised. Put it in that perspective and I would have stuffed him in a pot of boiling tea not the tiy

I met Molyneux once in 1992. I was a high school kid and it was at a computer and gaming show in London. We had a brief chat about Populous which I was a big fan of and I let him get going as he looked like he places to be. I also met Charlie Brooker who worked at the first CEX store in Tottenham Court, Rathbone place. I remember thinking 'I hope the grumpy one doesn't serve me, he might not give me as much for my games im trading in' not realising prices were fixed! :)
@porkwoofles39097 жыл бұрын
That's really cool. Molyneux was in that group of the first "celebrities" of video game development, and really put the British games industry on the map. Kinda saddening to see how he's treated today, tbh.
