5 ways 'BORING PLANTS' transform TROPICAL GARDENS

Tropical gardens make spectacular outdoor spaces. The lush leaves and bold tropical blooms can give us a sense of being transported to dream holiday destinations in tropical locations around the world.
When growing tropical style plants in parts of the world with cooler weather, tropical gardens can sometimes become slow to reach their potential each year. Often tropical gardens will reach their peak in mid to late summer, making much of the potential growing season become a waiting game where we wish for warmer weather. This doesn’t have to be the case! By adding plants that some may describe as ‘boring’ into your tropical garden you will benefit in many ways. In this video I talk through 5 ways in which some reliable and readily available plants will enrich your tropical garden, making it an outdoor space that is more enjoyable for you and wildlife over a longer period of the year.

In my garden I use nasturtium, nigella and papaever, mostly self sown. They give me early growth and colour as my tenders get going, they're also a B plan in case I lose more plants than usual in the winter.

Brilliant strategy. As you noted, interleaving reliable temperate plants into your garden knits the garden's plantings into a pleasing composition. Similiar to your experience, Summer weather appearance was tardy here in Southern California, so the tropicals are a bit behind.

I have oxalis tetraphylla 'Iron Cross' in the border and also in pots. It has bi-coloured leaves and deep pink flowers and dies back completely in the winter. A friend gave me some pot marigolds that had self-seeded in her garden. I planted them by the cannas that have finally got going. Fuchsias aren't boring! I've got a pale pink and purple one that my mum planted over twenty years ago. It's totally hardy and yet it looks exotic (at least to me). Sorry, no idea what variety.

I have used coleus, although I do remove the flower stems. Also red Argyranthemums work well.

I love doing stuff like this. And I live in Southern California, prime climate for unusual or interesting plants! Of course, we do have many amazing and rarer specimens, all kept outside 365 days, but the bulk of the “filler” or “green” you see in my garden is made up of things that are hardy and help to focus the eye of the viewer… the yard surrounding the house has several varieties of _Crassula ovata_ (jade), plus Indian hawthorn, _Pittosporum_ (variegated), _Chlorophytum_ (spider plants), _Agapanthus_ (Nile lily), and a huge wall covered in _Ficus pumila_ (creeping fig), which has been here my whole life, and I’m 38. We also have a wall of _Solandra maxima_ (cup of gold vine) and a MASSIVE, 20-ft. wide x 8-ft. tall _Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum_ (split-leaf philodendron AKA 'Selloum' or 'Hope') that are the same age! And _Brugmansias_ (Angel trumpet), _Epidendrum_ & _Cymbidium_ orchids, lavenders, cannas, lantanas, sansevierias (snake plants), several pelargonium types, various bromeliads, and the list goes on. Species many wouldn’t care about…but they’re important!

@@daphneking3954 I've got some that I grow in pots and place them around the border. They probably don't grow as well as those in the ground but they do well and are easy to dry store over winter once the pot has dried, in a frost free shed or garage 👍

@@chrismartin9190 I’ve always mulched mine in their pots and kept them outside but lost them all last year so might have to move them into the garage this year. Will try mulching one and leave in the ground and see how it fares
