Yes, for a top sheet! I live in South Africa. We call it a flat sheet (as opposed to the fitted sheet, which hugs the mattress and mattress protector). A flat sheet is also useful if it's too hot for the duvet or comforter, but you still want something to cover you. Because the ends are folded under the bed, it also offers a great cocoon to sleep in.

I’m from the USA, born in the late 1940s. The top sheet was widely used because in the states we used to use wool blankets. They were very scratchy and couldn’t really be washed too often, if at all. So the top sheet both protected the skin and kept the blankets cleaner. We also used hot water bottles. Now of course I have a duvet and I use duvet covers.

I agree. I love having that weight in the dead of winter. Just, so cozy and it reminds me of childhood. Have you ever ironed your sheets before putting them on the bed? It's amazing, especially in the summer, to slip in between those beautifully crisp cotton sheets. I have allodynia and have to sleep on the higher end, Egyptian cotton sheets at 800tc or higher. The 800 is usually the best, imo, because they're so soft. But giving them a nice ironing makes them softly crisp and delicious. Always a good night. 😊

American here: I've always used a top sheet. I like the feel of it on my skin as opposed to heavier, sometime scratchier materials. Another advantage of this that I discovered during marital life is different temperature preferences. I like it cooler, my wife prefers it warmer. Thus, I'll kick off the blanket/quilt on my side and only sleep under the top sheet, while my wife sleeps under the sheet AND blanket/quilt. During the winter, she'll sleep under that PLUS the layer I've thrown over her side, with a little bunched between so she doesn't get a draft from my side.

The top sheet serves more than one purpose. First, it's smooth and generally softer fabric than the quilt, and keeps the rougher surface of the quilt from coming in contact with the skin. Second, it also shields the quilt from body soil, and helps keep the quilt cleaner longer, so it has to be washed or cleaned less frequently. Thirdly, it serves as a light covering for warm nights, so the quilt gets less use and lasts longer. It's like having a pillow case to sleep on, plus a pillow sham to look pretty.
@catlinboy
@catlinboy Жыл бұрын
I want to defend British people and say we aren't sweaty goblins who dont care about hygiene. We dont have top sheets, instead we have a quilt cover, which is like a pillow case for the quilt. So when changing the bedsheets you wash the quilt cover, not the quilt. So know, we have the same priorities, just solved it in a different way.

How does this match up with people like me who constantly roll in and out of the quilt or on top of it. The top sheet would just be bunched up.
@ThundermansThunder
@ThundermansThunder Жыл бұрын
A top sheet is just more versatile, and usually of finer material, than a duvet cover, so it feels better against the skin, is lightweight, offering the sheerest covering, that can be just right in a slightly cool room, where even the lightest blanket would be too heavy, so it allows better personal control over body temperature. A duvet cover may offer protection for the quilt or the comforter that it covers, but you do not use the duvet cover, on its own, as you would a top sheet, so it is limited. The more comfortable you are, the better you sleep, which is vitally important, for good health. Both see use, in the USA, sometimes both, at the same time, because they both serve multiple purposes.

As American who lives abroad, I find washing sheets, including a top sheet, easier than washing and replacing a duvet cover. Perhaps because it was a newer skill for me, I found it took too long to fit the duvet back inside of the cover properly. And duvets are bulky and hot. I eventually settled upon using my cute duvet cover alone minus the duvet along with my 2 sheets
@lizajoymorales248
@lizajoymorales248 Жыл бұрын
Not to mention that the duver cover is going to fade and wear out far more quickly if it is washed so frequently, which means you have to buy a new one, and they're always far more expensive than a top sheet. As an American living in southern Spain, I learned to put a thin blanket in the duvet cover all year long, and just add a blanket underneath it in the cooler months.

I'm Irish and I get the feeling that the top sheet is something Americans inherited from us (and other European countries no doubt). I have a comforter and comforter cover but with a King mattress it’s almost too big for my washer. For me, as an American, the extra sheet is so you don't quicky soil your blanket, it also gives slight protection from other people using the same blanket like at a hotel/motel. And the extra sheet keeps things insulated. Ive noticed that when its cold, if I'm only using a blanket i will still feel cold. But with a sheet, it seems to keep the heat in a lot better. It even works better for yarn blankets/afghans. I've slept at people's house where they didn't have the extra blankets. So they gave me an afghan or one of those lighter smaller blankets and I was cold all night.

Here in the US as well. When you purchase a sheet set, it has (typically) a fitted bottom sheet, a flat top sheet and a single standard pillow case for a single bed, the same but with two standard pillow cases for a double/queen size and typically 3 king size (I think? US Peeps, correct me if I’m wrong-thanks) pillow cases for a king size bed. When it comes to a California King size, I dunno: If I crawled into one of those I’d need road signs, a GPS and Alexa to get out of it or I’d just die of hunger/thirst-if loneliness didn’t kill me first :-) Now, maybe if I was a California King kinda sized lady, I wouldn’t need a hot water bottle: I could just crawl into the middle of that thang and become the filling in a mattress taco ;-)

In my experience, beds in Britain tend to be smaller because the actual bedrooms are smaller. I've never seen an adult in North America use a single mattress; they are generally for children. If you use a topsheet, as you say it keeps the quilt cleaner... but a bonus is if you wake up being too hot you can fling off the quilt and just use the sheet. Box mattresses make the bed more comfortable to sleep on, imo. Keep up the awesome work! :)

Down south in the US, the top sheet also repels certain flying insects that you just can't seem to keep out. Flies, mosquitos and the errant yet armored June Bug. Quilts also tended to be handed down heirlooms so you'd try to wash them once a season or when there was an incident. Comforters have largely replaced quilts as standard on a bed. In fact, if you are staying as a guest in an American house, the quilt folded up carefully at the foot of the bed might honestly be just decorative but can be used in the event of lost power during the night in winter.

In Finland, sheet sets come with a mattress sheet, pillow cases and duvet envelope sheet/cover (great invention!) for duvet/blanket. Mattress sheets (fitted) are bought separately. Duvets are often very light white material as they’re never meant to be used without a duvet envelope sheet. I’ve never seen them in the U.S. or UK but they like two flat sheets sewn shut along the edges so it looks like a kind of bag, with one short edge left open, and two narrow slots left open at both corners of the other short end, to help you pull the duvet up the ‘bag’.

Both my kids and my husband hate top sheets and just used a comforter for years. My eldest upgraded to a duvet with the cover recently but my bed is still the only one with a flat sheet and duvet with cover. It's just how my grandmother taught me and tbh since menopause brought night sweats it's been a lifesaver! Btw you can stretch it between washes by folding down the duvet and sheet so where you lay it mostly exposed and then set up a fan or open the windows if it's nice out and let it air out.

I've always thought of the flat sheet as a barrier between your sweating body and the comforter so you don't have to wash the comforter as often. Until recently duvets and duvet covers weren't commonplace in the U.S. outside of higher end linen brands, and having a washing machine large enough to accommodate a comforter requires a trip to the laundromat. So the flat/top sheet keeps things fresher and cleaner for longer.

Same as kakapocc said, the window is a fire safety feature. There are size restrictions (minimums) such that the average human adult can escape. The closet requirement is more recent, and is because there was a period of time where people were buying houses with several small open rooms (dining room, breakfast nook, or a large bedroom) and sectioning them off into two "rooms" to boost the price of the home (which was originally based on a bed-bath-yard ratio). The requirement of a closet then requires a re-registering of rooms where the sizes are disclosed, thus, protecting the buyer from a scam.. Mostly... We looked at houses where they listed it as 3 bedrooms but the blueprints said two. Turns out they converted the garage by simply adding carpet and sealing the garage door. It was horrible, and they boosted the price despite it still only had 2

When I was young, we slept under a top sheet and two wool blankets. If it were really cold, we pulled up the bedspread. We got used to the weight of all these coverings. With the advent of duvets, we’ve ditched one of the blankets and the bedspread, but not the top sheet and one, lighter wool blanket. The air conditioner is turned a little lower to compensate for all this warmth! We find the weight of these coverings reassuring and comforting, promoting a better sleep. It’s all about what one is used to. When we travel and find our hotel bed lacking a blanket, which few have anymore, we just shrug our shoulders and submit to the 21 century. However, these beds always have a top sheet under their duvets, as do the beds on cruise ships, undoubtedly for hygienic reasons. Regarding duvets, duvet covers are sold here in Canada with pillow shams. Duvet cover “sets” include the duvet cover, shams, and a fitted bottom sheet. And one has alwas been able to buy all bed linen separately. I’ve heard of sandwiching the duvet between two top sheets, but that’s too much bother, even for me.🇨🇦

It must be a pain in the neck to have to wrestle a big comforter in and out of the duvet cover every week. It is much easier to wash the top and bottom sheets and remake the bed. It only takes a couple of minutes to strip the bed and load the washing machine and then the drier. If you start early enough in the day, you don't even have to fold the sheets--just pop them back onto the bed. Love your videos.

Pain it might be if you don’t have the technique right, but the time lost once a week is regained daily by how quick making the bed each morning is, no need to straighten and re-tuck two sheets, just smooth the bottom one (re-tucking that one only) and shake the duvet and smooth then add the pillows and done. Tucking in a top sheet the way my grandmother at least used to do it, is a real pain, even she came around to duvets and duvet covers by the 1990s!

I do use a duvet, and have several different covers, but that’s a fairly recent thing, having only discovered duvets in 2013. 55+ years of top sheets and blankets is not something you give up easily. 😂 I’d rather launder a top sheet than a duvet cover, because it’s much easier to replace a top sheet than stuff a king size duvet into a cover. Now perhaps if my covers’ openings were half again as long, it might not be such a PITA to replace them. Maybe cover makers could splurge on two more buttons or another tie?

I think there’s a slight loss in translation. What you call a comforter seems to be slightly different from what we call a duvet. A comforter seems to be what we call a quilt or an eiderdown. Duvets are generally heavier (you can buy summer weight ones). and are never used without a separate cover which is made of sheet like cotton. The duvet itself is only washed very occasionally. The cover is stripped with the other bedclothes and washed. Also, a lot of people in America seem to still use blankets. The only time I see anyone used blankets here is in a hotel. Where, you generally get a top sheet, fitted in such a way that the person who can successfully peel it back shall be crowned the king of England.

@@Dreyno A comforter in America has the look and bulkiness of a summer weight duvet without the duvet cover. Almost all comforters are in solid or patterned fabric like a quilt, but not quilted, because the majority of Americans don't use duvets. We never did and I don't think my mother even knows what a duvet is. We also don't use the term top sheet, or I never did. It's called a Flat Sheet. If you go to the store that is what you would look for, not top sheet. Usually comforters are much cheaper to have than quilts, which can be extremely expensive unless you get a cheap one at Walmart.

@kamicokrolock
@kamicokrolock 3 жыл бұрын
@@southernbellebabies this is a pretty good explanation of the difference but to be a bit more precise: A quilt is a quilted blanket made mostly from cotton with batting between the front and back. A comforter is sometimes quilted but is distinguished from its down (or faux down/heavy batting) filling giving the comforter quite a bit of loft. A duvet, is a plain down/ faux down comforter like blanket that has a removable and washable cover that negates the use of a sheet (but I guess you could use one if you wanted to). Duvets tend to be more popular in the warmer areas of the country where people prefer less bedding because they get hot.

The entire house has only one real closet and it was added in the 1920s (and it's in the hall, not a bedroom). The inspector went around asking about each room. When we said something was a bedroom, he was like, "Nope, there's no closet, so it can't be a bedroom." Dude, the house was built in 1791. The one bedroom closet it does have, still doesn't count. It has three walls attached to the wall of the bedroom, and it has doors... I can only imagine the reason it doesn't count is that it's made from plywood (made by a relative 30 years ago) rather than framed walls. I design houses as a hobby and when I've shown my English friend, they were baffled at first. "Why is there a dresser in your water closet?" Umm because that's WIC for walk-in-closet, not W/C for water closet. Next design... "Why do you need a separate room for getting dressed?" It's a dressing room, also known as a WIC but that confused you so I changed the label. "Yeah but why do you need a separate room for that?" LOL

not entirely true. we’re building a house now, and closets are not required by code where we are located. only our master has a closet, the remaining 3 bedrooms will have wardrobes.

Where I am, I think, to be a bedroom it has to have a window. My house is old and there are no closets, no linen closet, it’s a small house so there’s no way to steal a little space from another room to build closets. 😞

Back in the day, blankets were made of wool. Wool is itchy, ergo the top sheet. It's a comfort thing.

easier to wash a sheet than a blanket too

@@rachaelbean1439 yeah but they use duvets with a cover, like a comforter pillowcase. I’ve adopted this method as my top sheet always led to uncomfortably twisted misaligned bedding that was uncomfortable to me. Just pop the cover in the wash and replace as you would a sheet. Also this now makes “making the bed” take no time at all.

I can attest to that. The army gives S.I.T's (soldiers-in-training) two olive colored wool blankets, two flat sheets, one pillow and pillow case. Never ever put the top blanket with the US symbol facing up. That means that you're dead.

@@jeferrell79 I was in the Navy. We were issued the same thing. The wool blanket could NOT stay on the rack (bed). It had to be folded up and placed at the foot of the bed with the symbol up.

Duvet covers the down comforter then there’s the top sheet then the fitted sheet. Top sheet is an absolute must-have.

@@AllieSierdsma they are the same, it would be like a doctor talking to you in medical terms. If I said just give it to me in layman's terms he would say it's a top sheet as opposed to it's a flat sheet. When we buy sheets it states one fitted one flat depending on the size of your bed one or two pillowcases. This pandemic needs to end because some of these conversations get so silly are so serious over such silly things LOL I find it really interesting though, different slang or just different words in general that we use from country to Country. I love the interaction as long as everyone keeps it friendly and respectful. I think it's hilarious that there seems to be some Unwritten rule about what you need to do with your bed covers. Just all personal preference. There's so many great answers.

When I was a kid, we didn’t have fitted sheets. Sheet sets came with 2 flat sheets. One for the mattress (tucked under the mattress) the other for the top sheet. Before A/C was common, top sheet was enough during warmer months when bedspreads (didn’t know what a duvet was, and quilts were something the Amish made) were too hot.

Aussie here, we use a fitted bottom sheet, a top sheet then a quilt. Top sheet helps circulate air or wick sweat away as a duvet/quilt tends to trap it in. Also handy if it gets too warm for a quilt but too cool to be completely exposed.
