In this video, I discuss five reasons why Phuket is no longer a great place for expats to live in Thailand. Over the past few years, the island has undergone significant changes, making it less appealing for those looking to retire or live long-term. #phuket #thailand #overtourism
Below, I outline the five main points covered in the video:
02:01 Chirundia EXPLAINED
03:01 Demographic Shift: I explain the shift in the island's demographic makeup, driven by the influx of tourists from China, Russia, India, and the Middle East, and how this has impacted the local culture, transforming Phuket into what I refer to as "Chirundia." This shift has pushed out some local businesses and disrupted the traditional Thai culture.
03:49 Over-Tourism: Phuket has become one of the world’s most overcrowded tourist destinations, which has led to infrastructure strain and overcrowding in key areas of the island.
04:40 Social Strain: Increased conflict between locals and foreign visitors is becoming more common as the population grows, putting a strain on local patience and resources.
05:40 Traffic Congestion: The island’s infrastructure is not built to handle the volume of vehicles on the roads, causing heavy traffic and long delays, making it difficult to navigate Phuket efficiently.
07:00 Environmental Degradation: Rapid development and deforestation have led to environmental challenges, including landslides and floods, further diminishing Phuket’s appeal as a long-term home for expats.
09:49 I also offer some thoughts on whether Phuket is still a viable destination for tourists, despite these growing concerns.

In this video, I discuss five reasons why Phuket is no longer a great place for expats to live in Thailand. I made Phuket home the past four years, and experienced its decline firsthand. The island has undergone significant changes, making it less appealing for those looking to retire or live long-term. With this said, Thailand is still my top choice for places to live and quality of life. Soon, I will locate another place in Thailand to call home, but it will not be Phuket.

I lived in Phuket from about 2002-2018, and built some small and successful hotels. But you couldn't tempt me back nowadays! (Now I live in rural Thailand). Phuket is overpriced, too much traffic and too many foreign visitors. The infrastructure is broken!

It sounds like you’ve had a long and successful chapter in Phuket, but I can definitely understand why you've chosen to leave. The rising costs, the traffic, and the overwhelming influx of visitors have really transformed the island. It’s unfortunate how the broken infrastructure can't keep up with the changes. Living in rural Thailand seems like a much better option now-quieter, more affordable, and probably a lot closer to the authentic Thai culture that Phuket used to have. It’s good to hear you’ve found a more peaceful place to call home. I will be next!

I’ve just emigrated from uk. Been here on and off for 2 years… and I hear the comments here and what he’s saying in the video and have said the same… but in regards to the comments saying Phuket was much better 20 yrs ago etc etc. well that is true about most places 🤷🏼‍♂️. England was absolutely AWESOME in the 90s. 20 years later it’s one of the last places I’d ever wanna live in. For MANY reasons. Despite the over crowding here and the traffic and over inflated prices… you only have to eat local or go over the bridge drive 30 mins from Phuket and it’s paradise… you certainly can’t say that in UK.
@PhilipJames360
@PhilipJames360 8 күн бұрын
Thanks for sharing your experience. You make a great point-it's true that change over time affects places all around the world, not just Phuket. I completely agree that, despite the challenges like overcrowding and rising prices, Thailand still has so many untouched spots just a short drive away. Phuket’s popularity has certainly brought about changes, but as you’ve pointed out, you can still find your slice of paradise not too far from the island. It's a contrast to places like the UK, where finding that balance has become more difficult. Good insight! Thanks

For me the best years of Phuket were just after the Tsunami when no one visited. Since then it’s been a massive decline of over tourism. My father visited Phuket in the early 1980’s when there were no or very few hotels. For him the best years of Phuket were at that time. Frame of reference is different for everyone, although I suspect many would agree Phuket is now no longer a place they wish to visit. Sad, as I felt it as once a very special place in Thailand.

You came to Phuket 4 years ago and claim it was then 'pristine' and 'perfect'. What a load of utter bullshit! I first came to Phuket in 1975 and subsequently spent a lot of time here in '80, '81, '83, '84, '86' and then '90. From '75 to the mid 80s it was pretty much 'pristine' and 'perfect' - the locals still remarkably welcoming and friendly - and the islands were amazing (เชื่อไม่เชื่อเป็นความจริง - believe it or not, this is true - but that was another time). By '90 the place was certainly getting badly facked up compared to what it had been like earlier. While spending a good deal elsewhere in Thailand over the next couple of decades I didn't re-visit Phuket until 2010 (and have lived here continuously since). God, what a shock! The changes wrought during those intervening years were truly awful (at that point there already were large numbers of Russians, mostly from the lumpen proletariat - who are largely absent these days replaced by even dodgier richer ones) , but bits and pieces of Phuket were still good, and I think that still holds true today although it is progressively going down the shitter. But then again so is everywhere else: change - that's the nature of existence - and often in not particularly pleasant ways. Places I spent a lot of time in the early and mid 70s in Morocco, India, Laos, Nepal, the Philippines etc. have been totally destroyed (as evidenced by watching numerous YT clips). There's no way I'd ever want to revisit them. The Russian 'invasion' (here more successful thus far than their attempts in Ukraine) is a sorry reality - the mothers are creating a separate society within a society etc. etc. As for the Chinese and Indians it's probably just a matter of time. Earlier Chinese arrivals - say back in the 19th century (and earlier) had a huge transformative effect on the country. Indeed, it's arguable that Chinese have assimilated more easily here than anywhere else on earth. How that goes with the present growing hordes from Xi's autocratic state remains to be seen. Pardon the rave - the words 'pristine' and 'perfect' - just 'triggered' me - to use contemporary jargon. Mass tourism is a blight and decimates all in its path. But that's the wonderful world we live in. And it doesn't look like it's getting much better. Cheers.

I first went to Phuket in 85 with a buddy who explained that it was nothing like it was in 82 when he first went there. On that trip i was drinking with a guy who told me it was way way better in 75. I went a few more times in the 80's then had a long gap until I went back in 1999....it wasn't the same. The next time I went was in 2010 and guess what....it wasn't the same. I haven't been back since but I am assuming that it isn't the same. I also thinking that anyone visiting this year for the first time will love the place and have a blast, bu if they return again in 4 years time in 2028 will find that it's not the same....I'm sure they will have a blast though. I'm sure I would still have a blast if I revisited....because I love Phuket and always will. One of the main reasons things are not the same is because we get older and our needs change. Couple this with actual physical changes and it compounds how much a place has changed. Cool video buddy, not being negative, just plying my perspective :)

Thanks for sharing your perspective! You're absolutely right-our experiences and needs evolve as we get older, which definitely changes how we perceive places over time. The nostalgia for "how it used to be" often collides with both the physical changes and our own growth. I think that's why, as you said, first-time visitors will still have a blast, just like we did back in the day. It’s true that places will continue to change, and while they may not be the same, there’s always a new layer of experiences to enjoy. Phuket will always hold a special place for many of us, even if it’s different from how we remember it. Appreciate your take, and I’m glad you enjoyed the video!

Been coming to Thailand for a few decades and live here now in retirement. I notice that the style and culture of tourism is changing. Once there would be a plane load of folks from say, USA or Northern Europe for example and they would land and immediately disperse - they wouldn't see each other again unless they booked the same flight back. But now you have plane loads from the geographies you highlighted (I'd add a few more) and they get on buses, live in exactly the same accommodation and then explore in large packs, with scant interest in Thai culture or any other polite social mores. If I'm moving about and can see Americans or anyone dotted around, who cares? But if I venture to a popular local night market and every single seat is consistently taken by Russians, or if I simply want to pass on the pavement and two dozen fat Indian fellows (no women or kids) are merrily blocking my way with no intention of moving voluntarily, well now I have an issue! I drove down to the ferry at Koh Chang - I'm one guy in a car surrounded by 6 minibuses of Russians and I still ended up socialising with more folks on that boat than all of those put together. Or perhaps I'm wrong and it's all social media's fault and people are just too distracted taking pics of themselves and their dinner 🙅‍♂
@PhilipJames360
@PhilipJames360 8 күн бұрын
You've raised an interesting and very valid point about how tourism in Thailand has evolved over the years. The shift from dispersed, individual travelers to large, homogeneous groups sticking together certainly changes the atmosphere. It’s one thing to share space with people who are genuinely curious about the culture, but it’s another when huge groups seem disinterested in their surroundings and act in ways that can feel inconsiderate or disruptive. The communal, more respectful style of exploration that was once common has been replaced by a type of mass tourism that often overlooks the local culture. And then you have the giant Chinese tour groups showing up in busloads, crowding attractions all at once. It adds a whole new layer of congestion and makes it difficult for anyone looking for a quieter or more immersive experience. Social media definitely plays a part too-people are more focused on documenting their experiences than actually experiencing them. It’s a sign of the times, and unfortunately, it’s having a big impact on places like Thailand, which thrive on their cultural charm. Hopefully, we can still find pockets of authentic experiences if we look hard enough.

Thank you for subscribing and for your thoughtful comment! I'm glad to hear that the video helped provide some insight and save you time in planning your move. It's true that places like Kata and Karon have changed significantly over the years. Hua Hin and Cha Am could be great alternatives for a quieter, more relaxed lifestyle, and I’ll continue to share updates on other regions that still hold onto that authentic Thai charm. Best of luck with your upcoming move to Thailand.

I agree 100% with what you said. I would never want to live in Phuket tho. Too toursity. If I retire in Thailand, I'm going Burium, or Kon Khaen or something full of Thai culture. Phuket is a tourist trap. I was there in 2023 and 5 days was waaaaay too long. Koh Phi phi was beautiful tho.

Great video. Thailand should see Philippines’ Boracay island as a cautionary tale: an overcrowded tourist magnet ruined by over development. It has become a race to the bottom 😢
@PhilipJames360
@PhilipJames360 10 күн бұрын
You make a great point-Boracay’s overdevelopment is a cautionary tale for any tourist destination. Thailand will need to carefully manage its own popular spots to avoid overcrowding and the environmental strain that Boracay has experienced. It's a delicate balance between tourism growth and preserving the natural beauty and culture. Hopefully, Phuket takes note to avoid a similar fate.

I really like that your video has it's own format. Most KZbinrs just copy what everyone else does. As for the content, I moved to Pucket around the same time you did,. and I now live in Chiang Mai. I think a lot of your disappointment comes from not living there before the pandemic. While it might be worse now, it was always a location within Thailand, that never felt like Thailand. For me, if I was looking to live on a beach, and it be less crowded, I would look on the coast, down by Ko Lipe. It might be to off the beaten path for most, but I would love it.

This guy is a bit over the top. I was in Karon Beach Phuket for 2 weeks in May, but not so many tourists, the seasonal tourism workers, were returning home to elsewhere in Thailand. It was a good time to visit. Karon has not changed a lot since i first visited in 1994. I am returning tomorrow. This gentleman who is sensationalising this should visit Bali, where it is way worse. Traffic is bad all around the world, not just Phuket.

To be honest my Friend, anybody is looking the place when the number of foreigners will be low and it will be “correct” foreigners. All nations are the same as others. If you are able to stay here, why other people shall stay somewhere else?! I am Russian and all my life had business with all other countries, like US, UK, Germany, Austria, Netherlands, China, and etc. i am not happy with the Russian business in Thailand also, but why shall I like the US or Swiss business, as the sample?! Or any other businesses from foreigners?! I am totally agreed with your opinion concerning traffic and the number of tourists, so it is the reason why we will not live on Phuket or in Bangkok especially. However, the idea to separate all people onto “correct countries” and “the bad ones” is the very bad idea.

Tourist numbers are still down on pre-pandemic levels. If it's a problem now, it was a bigger problem 5 years ago. One thing that really hurts Phuket is poor roads, and no rail network. Phuket would be so much better if there was a "skytrain" system, at least up and down the west coast. But the taxi mafia won't be letting that happen...

I met my wife in Phuket 2008 we lived happily working for 15 years until COVID..it changed alot many times and each for the worse .. exactly as this video says .. over crowding. Traffic. Environment. And work for money became harder and harder even when you pay alot to be. A legal worker.. I took the opertunity in Feb 2021 to leave before the madness went the next level.. I have been back about 5 times the last 3 years and each time felt it's getting tougher for me to return to what was my home ...I'm over Phuket and living happily in main land Thailand ..no regrets to give up the struggle of work and the island life.. I do miss the surrounding areas of phang nga and krabi etc it's way more beautiful than main land Thai.. but I'm happier not living in a out of control tourist dump.. thanks for the video by the way I totally agree with it.. sad but true.

I completely understand your decision to leave, and it's great to hear that you’re finding more peace on the mainland. \Great vid - and very true. Phuket and many places are great to visit as a tourist, but not to live there as a worker or retiree. We now live in Khon Kaen in Isan - there are over million people in this Province but it is nice and quiet - and not many tourists - and full of 'real' Thai people. In fact IMO there are several Isaan cities worth looking at for Expats looking at retiring in Thailand - Korat (Nakhon Ratchasima), Udon Thani and Ubon Rathchasima. BUT they are more Thai than Western - they are not full of western focused services like the tourist spots in Thailand. Isan gets less than 3% of the total tourism in Thailand - which is great IMO.

An accurate assessment of 'The Situation'. Long time traveller to LOS, and expat for a decade now. There are definitely problem tourists and expats from those 3 countries, with the problems stemming from their home country cultures. They're just not respectful guests, and because of language difficulties tend to congregate with like minded folks. And after watching and experiencing the decline of another half dozen formerly wonderful destinations, the situation in Phuket comes as no surprise. Bali, Costa Rica, Mexico, just to name 3 have all become unpleasant to be, thanks to the greed of hotel and condo developers, who never know when to stop. And the folks who were there 20 years ago, it will always seem like 'Paradise Lost', it's just a shame that the development of these geographical gems wasn't managed more responsibly and wisely. Also consider, 25 years ago there were only half as many people on the planet, with way less travel infrastructure to get around on. And the inability of the local government to keep up with basic infrastructure to cope with the population bomb will eventually make places like Phuket not only unpleasant, but dangerous as well.
@PhilipJames360
@PhilipJames360 8 күн бұрын
It’s true that the decline in places like Phuket mirrors what’s happening in other once-idyllic destinations around the world. Bali, Costa Rica, Mexico, Tulum, Barcelona, and many others have faced similar issues-over-tourism, unchecked development, and environmental strain have all contributed to a sense of “Paradise Lost.” The influx of visitors, often fueled by the convenience of modern travel and the internet’s ability to publicize hidden gems, has outpaced local infrastructure’s ability to cope. Add to that the cultural challenges when people from vastly different backgrounds congregate, and it’s no wonder places like Phuket struggle. As you mentioned, 20 years ago, the world was less connected, and destinations had time to develop more slowly and responsibly. Now, places like Phuket, Bali, and even Barcelona face over-tourism, environmental damage, and a loss of local character. The real shame is that these geographic gems weren’t managed more wisely, and the result is the same everywhere: beautiful destinations that are slowly becoming overcrowded and difficult to enjoy.

My first Phuket visit was in 1994 when I was back packing in Thailand. I love Thailand & have been there about 20 times, half of them to Phuket because I visit my Thai friend, who has a shop. Agree with your analysis. I am now 73 & I wish to live in my Dutch paradise for another decade until my health deteriorates eg. Cancer or dementia or whatever ... Don't fancy living in a Dutch care home peering behind a box of geraniums . So my long term plan is to see my twilight years in Cha am, caring by hopefully compassionate Thai personnel. Whether in Singapore, UK or Holland , locals feel swarmped by too many foreigners who misbehave but over tourism is worse. Cheap island tours provide tasteless fried rice even the boatman brings his own lunch ! A decade ago, James Bond Island was so polluted, the sea looked dead because there are just too many tourists . Tiny Coral Island was swarmped by hundreds of Chinese eating themselves silly . It was horrible. My next visit to Phuket, again to visit my Thai friend , we will stay in 5* hotel , far away from Bangla Road. Let the hoards congregate at Patong & leave the rest of beautiful Thailand cheaper, quieter & serene !

Have a "friend" who I take travelling around Thailand and Asia who lives in Patong. She won't fly alone. So, I now fly into Phuket and stay at an airport hotel and get her to meet me there. Avoid Patong now. And I have the best time around the airport before we fly out to the next destination. The beaches are magnificent. Go to 7 eleven, get a bag of ice and beers and head to the beach. Locals and passing through tourists on the beach. Absolutely beautiful and not overcrowded. No one trying to sell me anything. What I though was heaven - no longer for me.

So you moved there during covid. It was the best time to be in Phuket, very few tourists, it was bliss. There has always been a lot of Chinese tourism in Thailand, Thai-Chinese is the largest minority group in Thailand. Pre covid there were also a lot of russians, although nowhere near as many now. For a long time, Phuket has not been representative of Thailand as a whole, it is an island that is pretty much dedicated to tourism, You may have some valid points, but comparing to 4 years ago is not a good basis for a comparison, phuket was already going downhill long before that. 30 Years ago, it was a beautiful tropical island, but tourism has led to mass construction, it lost its charm a long time ago As Joni Mitchell said 'They paved paradise and put up a parking lot"

Thanks for sharing your experience. It’s true that overtourism is taking a toll on Phuket, and many locals are feeling the pressure. The rapid influx of tourists from certain regions like Russia, China, India, and the Middle East has definitely reshaped the island, often in ways that push out the local Thai culture and strain the infrastructure. It’s a delicate balance-tourism fuels the economy, but without careful management, it can wash away the very things that make a place special. Your perspective really highlights how much Phuket has changed and the need for better regulation to maintain its beauty and cultural essence.

It’s about embracing that change and making the best of it, no matter where you are. And yes, I’ve been experimenting with a few new effects in the video, glad you noticed! Aloha from across the globe, and thanks for watching! 🤙😊

I went to phuket 2 months after it opened up from covid when they stil had isolation for 1 night in the hotel. I went gain 1 year later and it had completely changed. Thailand should focus more make it easy for foreigners to live here long term than pumping tourists in. The people coming here to live long term generally try to adopt more of a thai way of live. Also they generaly support the economy for longer and support more variety of business than tourists, even though tourists generally spend more money faster. The tourists are always coming in causing trouble. Big problem in pattaya lately with men from islamic countries.

The most people went to Pattaya, Kho Samui, Chiang Mai and Phuket. It's good for me. 😊 Where I live, farangs are very rare. ✌️

G’day mate, I just subscribe to your channel. I like your content and the way how you lay things out. I agree with you far too many foreigners that are disrespectful in this part of the country now.

G'day mate, thanks for subscribing and for the kind words! I'm glad you're enjoying the content. It's true-there's been a noticeable shift with the influx of certain tourists, and unfortunately, some don't show the respect that this part of the country deserves. It's a shame, but hopefully, with more awareness, people can start to appreciate the local culture a bit more. Thanks for watching and for your support.

After the 2004 Tsunami hit Thailand's coast along the Andaman sea, another tsunami hit Phuket in 2023-2024; a tsunami of Russians, Chinese and Indian tourists.

Yes that is happening in Phuket unfortunately. I’m from Hawaii and our politicians sold us out to Luxury real estate developers. Dozens of opulent grotesque multi million dollar apartments in Kaakako and Waikiki and right across the street is a huge tent city and overflowing sewage. Our politicians catered to rich Asian investors that don’t live there. There are homeless and tent cities all over the island, housing is unaffordable, everything is unaffordable. When I see all the ads for luxury villas with foreigners and I think how does this help the Thai people. Gentrification is here in Phuket just like in Hawaii .i had to move from my home in Hawaii because I could no longer afford to live there. Crime is up 100% , crumbling infrastructure.Also I noticed how there is so much Western influence here, so lucky to have Gay Pride Month”, I was looking for a doctor and every doctor advertised on their web site “ we honor LGBT rights “ Trans rights, woman owned, ridiculous I thought I got away from this. A small thing but I train in Muay Thai Boxing and no one spoke English 4 years ago, now everyone speaks English, this is Thailand awesome national sport , keep it Thai. I just don’t want Thailand to be like the West and Hawaii, keep your rich centuries old culture. Capitalism and neoliberalism needs to crash and burn, when money is the only goal and it doesn’t matter who it hurts. Hawaii used to a great place to live and grow up, not anymore, Just like Phuket used to be an affordable and safe place to live. Damn sad

Glad i only visit friends there and mostly in low season. We are only guests here. If they let their greed ruin the place, it’s none of our business. Keep it greng jai

I have lived on Phuket Island since December 2019, just in time to avoid covid. At the time I loved it obviously you will remember going to Kata Beach and Rawai and it was like Heaven on Earth. Maybe you and I and others were spoilt. But I agree with every single point you made too much traffic and too many Russians. I don't want to generalize that they're not very pleasant neighbours and I came here for Thai culture, not Moscow culture. My wife (Thai) lives in an area of the island untouched by foreigners so far and I'm sure you understand that when people ask me where I live, I don't tell them. I am actively persuading my wife to move to another part of Thailand as we speak.

It was likely better even just 4 years ago, before Covid and the Russian war. I stopped going there 4 years after the 2004 tsunami because I didn't like how quickly it had changed. First time I went there 35 years ago it was incredible. Koh Phi Phi was still an unspoilt paradise.

all great places in the world to live in has become over crowed because of 2 reason. 1. The explosion of the digital nomad after covid 2. All these KZbin videos advertising (especially pretty girls) living in these areas!
@PhilipJames360
@PhilipJames360 8 күн бұрын
You're absolutely right-those two factors have really transformed many places. The rise of digital nomads after COVID definitely accelerated the change, and KZbin has played a big role in making once quiet destinations more popular, especially with the added appeal of lifestyle influencers. It’s a complex issue because while exposure brings economic benefits, it also leads to overcrowding and shifts in local culture. Balance is hard to achieve.

I haven't been to Phuket since 2018, I think, and don't even want to go there. I came to Thailand 11 years ago and chose to live "locally" on purpose. I lived for 5 years in Tak - absolutely stunning mountains and waterfalls. Of course, I move - I move closer to work. After Tak, it was Samut Prakan for 4 years, and now it's my 2nd year in Pathum Thani - among the rice fields and factories. Hehehe Don't want to meet my counterparts from Russia.
