To a person who's never owned a parrotlet, the whole premise of this video is hilarious. How to not get attacked by a tiny, adorable ball of fluff.

There are three other things you can try. 1. Create a zone of mutual understanding within the cage - place your hand in the cage and allow your bird to come to it. Dont move and allow the bird to explore your hand as desired learning there is no consequence of your hand being in the cage (aka they wont care if its there) after a few times you can begin to move in the cage or even toward them just dont go suddenly and keep movements slow and “read” your bird if they start to act all agro pause and let them calm before continuing. 2. Give the bird areas outside the cage which it feels are its own. Eg a bird “playground” making both inside and outside areas “mutual” areas and also giving your bird somewhere for my third suggestion. 3. When needing to alter the cage (eg clean it) remove the bird entirely and dont let them see what your up to 😂! Obviously these work together haha!

So your bird is cute and does do well with commands and seems sweet we have a parrotlet who is always sweet unless you mess with his food or water sometimes he's territorial when you go into his cage but that's very rare. He is also sweet when we put him back in his cage from our finger he will hop right in and say good boy bubby. so honestly to have to wear a shirt and make sure it covers your hands to put him away just shows you don't really know parrotlets that well. yes they have their moments all parrots do to show fear is not a good thing and when they bite dont pull away and say ouch you only make them want to do it again. Unless your in a situation such as opening a bag of food right in front of them or crinkling a bag in front of them can make them stir crazy don't bring your hands near em until they calm down. Patience is a virtue when it comes to parrotlets. If you don't have patience then you'll cover your arms like this lady and make your bird confused and make him or her know your scared.

Another thing you can do is expand his territory, give him food outside his cage, have a playgym, or just have toys outside of his cage with treats and stuff. If his cage is open most of the time, and he can go in and out as he pleases, he'll hopefully stop seeing his cage as his only safe and personal space. For me, my parrotlet has access to my whole room (occasionally she'll go to my shoulder and we'll go in other rooms) and I've also never grabbed her out of her cage, my hands only go in for good stuff so she has no reason to be upset. I do most of my work in my room since that's where my computers are, so she's used to me being "in her territory" so to speak. Of course, she's only 11 months old so these points may be moot if she hasn't hit puberty yet but I've gotten conflicting information on when that's supposed to be...so things may change. xD; Only thing she's been slightly territorial over is my keyboard, and now I only let her on there very occasionally now that she's more gentle. I've also taught her the "gentle beak" method.

Congratulations! They are amazing. I would say try hard to avoid him biting you & always correct him when he bites (squawk or blow on him, or say no, be gentle etc.). Spend time with him every day including a massage grooming session and night time lullaby and if you have to go away leave him with a pet sitter. Also tell him he is a good boy whenever he is being nice and gentle. Also, just be very careful with him. They are way too bold and curious for their size. Enjoy your new baby!!

hehehe, 1st rule doesn't work for me. My loves getting out of his cage. When I put my finger in there, he immediately jumps on my finger and wants me to take him out. Hehehe, all of these rules don't work for me. My bird is super shy. He won't bite me, which is good. He won't even bite others. I can't even put treat up to him. Nah, he's not interested. If I want him to come, I'll put my finger close to him and he jumps up and let me take him to cage. Also I can leave him on perch for several hours and he won't wander around and have someone step on him. I'm so glad that I got him. I've seen other birds attack owner, can't put finger in cage, etc.

@talkzcheep Hey! Thanks for your videos, I watched your parrotlet videos before deciding to get a little guy of my own. I've a little male Parrotlet, Odo. I've had him for a couple of months now. We seem to be 'stuck'... not making any more progress. He will, step up and eat food from my hands but he's not keen on spending time with me unless its just before his bed - he AIMS and FIRES at me for cuddles in the hood of my bathrobe. Can you give me a little advice? Or maybe another video for us newies? Thank you! Keep safe x

LionGoddess1 when your bird bites too hard tilt your hand gently to unbalance it a small amount (not enough to spook it or make it fly, be careful) and it will eventually associate the hard bite with the unbalancing and stop

Does this work with lovebirds? What about when ur bird bites ur face or ur neck for no known reason? My love bird is in heat and loves to bite any part of u she can get. When I first got her she was hand tame but had to be moved to my parents and now bites everyone most times now drawing blood. I have told her she is no longer allowed out of her house because she bites. There are two budgies in their own house and another lovebird in his own house. Non of these birds bite. (1 budgie stress bites that's it.) Could she have bounded with the other lovebird to the point of hating us? I have had a lovebird before but not two at the same time so I am completely lost. The first one I had chose to stop bitting me but still would nip others.

I'm sorry that your ringneck is scared of you. I'm no expert on parrots. I just have my one parrotlet. With him I put me finger outside his door and let him come to me. I never make him come out or put my hand in his cage to take him out. Maybe if you tempted him with millet he would come next to the door and eat and eventually sit on your hand. Could you find a parrot expert to work with, maybe someone in your area that hand raises them?

@abcgerbils
@abcgerbils 7 жыл бұрын
Parrotlet's come in many temperaments. That is nice that yours are not cage territorial, but many parrotlets are. It is also nice that you are able to house two together, parrotlets can be too aggressive to live with another unless it is in an aviary, experts recommend against keeping them together in a cage. I am no expert any means. I am just sharing what I've learned from my parrotlet. I'm sure it will be helpful for you to create and share videos of your experience with your birds.

CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME WHERE I CAN PURCHASE BABY PARROTLET
@michael-gr2uw
@michael-gr2uw 6 жыл бұрын
www.birdbreeders.com/birds/category/parrotlets Here is one. Many breeders will ship the bird to you on plane and you will need to pick up the birb from your nearest airport. However, that will cost you an extra $100-$150 and may take weeks before they send him/her out to you. Flybabies, however, will send you the birb through the USPS for free, but they charge for the "bird safe" packaging with air holes, sometimes a pocket heater, water, and food which is an extra $40. The bad thing about this is that it's stressful to birds, and they may develop a negative gram infection from the stress. Flybabies has good ratings on the BBB but I'm a little weary getting my own parrotlet from them. I recommend searching for a local breeder and to ask them to show you proof that the bird was tested for the highly infectious and debilitating illness known as Sex Beak and Feather disease; It's basically like a temporary HIV for them. It can be lifelong but tons of tender loving care may cure it. There's also bacterial and other types of infections... there are the big four to ask for (Borna, Polyoma, Psittacosis and PBFD). If you have other birds in household, make sure the new addition is healthy before introducing them in your house.

Is it normal for a baby Parrotlet to start biting?
@abcgerbils
@abcgerbils 7 жыл бұрын
I think it really depends on the parrotlet. They all taste things but some seem to be more nippy and bitey and other more gentle, even birds from the same clutch. It's important to distract, avoid and not react to the biting. Sven was very nippy when I first got him. I would roll my hand, put my thumb nail in his mouth, blow a puff of air on him and distract him. Good luck with yours.

@abcgerbils
@abcgerbils 6 жыл бұрын
I think often parrotlets can see you as their mate. They want to wear you down and dominate you to keep you in the nest. Check out my video help, my parrotlet bit me for more tips. I'd say do not put him in a position where he can bite you, no more shoulder sitting for now. Don't react to the bites (the hardest part!), spend lots of time with him. Teach him to talk and always tell him what you are doing. Teach him tricks (see Charlie the parrotlet). Give him a big cag and foraging toys. Let the cage be his territory and handle him once he is out of the cage (even the top is his space). Good luck! PS - there is always a reason for the biting, it just isn't obvious. They hate crinkly noises, they may want to dominate you, they may thing you are in their space/territory. They may be hormonal. They definitely need 12 hours of quiet, dark uninterrupted sleep to help with that. They may be molting and have lots of uncomfortable pin feathers, If you can figure out which are ready to pop and help with that it is another good way to bond.

@abcgerbils
@abcgerbils 7 жыл бұрын
I'm no expert, but maybe no shoulders for now. Or cover your ears. It's important to be patient and stop or prevent the behavior without reacting to it. Which is hard because ears are so tender. Birds love a good reaction.

I hand-raise cockatiels, and to get them to stop biting, when they nip my ears I give them a little shove with my head. Both puts my ear out of reach and makes them move, and this is the only response. Then when they sit still for a bit, they get attention and scratchies. Same with general biting. Gentle shove if too hard (while twisting finger out). If its gentle or just a tap, attention given. Its less about getting them to stop, and more that an acceptable action gets a desired response. Currently have one who gets my attention by leaning into my field of view and staring.

Thank you for this video, I am just recently bonding with our 2 new birds (most likely both female one might be male) very cute fellows during the day around noon my girlfriend is at home experiencing full audio entertainment! Seems they are happy. However since we got them from a store and they do seem very calm we are building trust from basically 0. We now successfully feed seeds off our hands (sunflower seeds) the big millet sticks are still scary, but when is a time to take an hour or 2 time and sit with them and try let them go out of the cage? They not listening yet have no commands how do you build this up as I think they might not want to return to their cage ?
