I really believe it depends on how much you interact with your bird, especially when he or she is young.I have a male parrotlet. He talks, gives kisses, and loves to be involved in whatever I am doing. He is more active in the morning, but loves to snuggle in the afternoon or in the evening.

My main concern is egg laying. I would prefer a female to be honest but I’ve read that them having eggs (even without a mate) can be dangerous or result in death. So I’m not sure how scared I should be about that.

True, but I don't know how common of a problem this is. I've never had an issue. I believe that is because I'm very focused on my parrot's diet. I understand that problems with egg-laying are due to poor diet. Hope that changes your mind - my girls are sweet things.

I've experienced the same. I have a male and a female, the female is more social, but she's also fiercer and a true biter, she's so sassy. My male is more easy going, more vocal, but also won't hang out with me that much, but if he does, he's the sweetest.

Is your female young? If so, the biting could face when she gets close to 10 months or so. Sassy may be permanent! Lol

I love your videos! Happen to be looking for a hand fed mellow parrotlet. Retired and lots of time. Have spent a fortune on cage and toys, just hoping to find a great baby. I have fostered and trained a lot of birds over the years, now it’s my turn to keep one! Love clicker training and hoping to do pet therapy. Any help finding a baby would be greatly appreciated.

I've had 1 male and 2 females. None of them talked ... while I understand why people would like to have an animal that "talks", it was never that important to me. Generally I think they are more likely to talk if they are solo birds. If you have a bunch of birds at the same time, they are more likely to mimic each other than you. just my opinion

Which can stay alone better for longer time if kept alone as we all are working, Males or Females...?? Is egg laying more common in Parrotlets or is it rare or occasional if we keep female..?? What are your opinions on price ranges? Do you think $200-300 is too much for one?
@ParrotBliss
@ParrotBliss 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mary, it is hard to impossible to know how a breeder treats their birds. A good breeder cares for their birds and feeds them well (fresh vegetables, a good quality pellet-based diet), keeps them clean, gives them plenty of room to move around and so on. If you can get a Parrotlet who is hand-fed from a breeder who truly takes good care of their Parrotlets, then I think that $500 is a good price. Just hand-feeding these little babies every 2 hours, which is what I find mine require, from sun up to sun down is demanding. Not all breeders feed their baby parrots as often as it is needed or keep their “nursery” as clean as it should be. If I were you, I would try to find out more about the breeder and his/her practices. If you are looking at an exotic bird store, do the same. See how they take care of their parrots and ask how often the babies get fed. In some ways, stores are more invested in taking a baby parrot and turning it into a healthy, weaned baby parrot for sale. LMK if that helps.

I love parrotlets but would not want to risk them being around my flock of Caiques. Caiques are know to not be very welcoming to different species. In fact they will often work together the dispatch the new comer. So I will admire and love them from a distance! ☺️❤️

Yes, I watch which birds I let the Parrotlets be around. They are brave, but little. I also agree about the Caiques- I keep explaining that the Macaws are bigger, have bigger beaks, but the Caiques don't believe me!

@BrittanyMarie27

Due to poor breeding/genetics they generally live around 8 years. They're supposed to live up to 20 but apparently bad breeding made them live shorter lives. Atleast the ones bred in the USA

I find this too, my female wants to be with me always. If I leave the room she flies to my head and stays there or my shoulder. She is always giving kisses and trying to curl up in or under my palm. My male will follow us from room to room will hang out on my shoulder but doesn't like touched or held. But he will talk up a storm, give me kiss and be happy on a shoulder. He is also mire prone to always nipping and biting. Her nipping doesn't even hurt it more like a touch "hey pay attention" . But I love them both :)

Personalities always vary, however, generally speaking, I don't let my Parrotlets around my Budgies because the 'Lets are too aggressive. BIG bird, little body with a Napolian mindset. I like that! Maybe I'll use it for a video title!

I agree with Namoraslife. My girl loves to be social, sassy, cuddly, learns tricks faster (shes a queen, she will demand for attention). My male is more chill, but also can be more cuddly in more of a curious cute zen sense. He is just chill. I will say go with males if it is your only pet at home. Females at certain age can start to lay eggs by themselves/ have potential to be egg bound(if they dont push it out in time) it can cause death. Even if you go to a vet to push it out, it can cause health issue. My female flew to heaven the next day after a egg removal and I bawled my eyes out. Also,Vet fee is not cheap: Treatment for egg removal/meds/ sewing of anus to prevent prolapse/staying overnight at vet overall may cost approx $800-2k depending where you are located. Hope this comment helps a bit.
