5 ways to prevent students from sharing a Google Quiz?

I was asked this great question by a fellow friend and educator last week about how to help another teacher eliminate students from sharing Google Quizzes. Students were sharing the quizzes to their friends ahead of class so they could prepare and see the questions.
For example, I give a quiz period 1. A student could copy the link and share to friends in a later period to prepare. Is there a way to prevent this?
At the time I was not sure what the answer was to this question. I was fascinated. How can we trump students who try to defy the system?
I should have known better. By now I should know that this constant tension is something all educators face. However, I to stop and think more deeply:
Is this question more about learning environments and control disguised as a tech question?
Now, before you answer I want you to know that I address both topic. The video will discuss some things to ponder about why this is a problem in the first place. AND then I deal with the reality that this is indeed an issue no matter how great our classrooms are there will always be that one kid who pushes the envelope. I share 5 ways in which you can minimize students cheating/sharing quizzes online.
Colorful Theme
Shuffle answer order
Shuffle question order
Data validation
Turn quiz on/off
I cannot wait to hear other tips and strategies as well as future conversation about this topic as a whole.

Thanks for the video. One suggestion is that you would need to mark the "password" question to be "required". If not, the user could simply leave it blank and go on to the next section without entering a password.

Would like to know if this is a possibility.. If I make a test and put in 10 sections, each section has 10 questions on different books or chapters we read/did through the year. Is there a way a student could pick any 5 of the sections they want ? and then another student picks 5 more sections? again all sections have 10 questions.. each question worth 2 points

Thank you for the rant! Very true especially with online learning now. Do you know by any chance if questions are shuffled, if they are also shuffled within sections?

Thanks very much, Mr.Maurer. I didn't know about the data validation and making an assessment into sections. I'm about to try a unit test via google forms in our computer lab and I'm going to try this. Thank you.

I didn't listen to the entire thing I stopped when he said "do we want our students to just learn it rote, what's the difference between the students getting the answers from a friend vs getting it through note cards or on the interned?" I want my language students to know the content not by rote but by practice. Having a peer just give them the answers without them having to practice the content first is doing them a disservice. It does matter how they get the information.

Sometimes you just needs a quick quiz with low level questions so this is perfect. One problem. If the kids go back to the link you made for them and TRY to retake the quiz, it will say "You have already taken this test." Then there will be an option there that says "see scores." If you have chosen to release scores immediately then the kids can just click on it and see all the responses and share them during lunch! I think you have to select "share after manual review" to prevent them from seeing the questions anytime they want.

Aminah Parilla you can, but you have to download an add-on called Timify. There are KZbin videos on how to download and use this feature. I don’t know why Google Forms and Microsoft Forms hasn’t included a timer as a default setting, but I wish they would! I found the video. I hope this is what you needed. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4fckmOglpKaosU

. In quiz if we make 5 sections, each containing 20 questions. So total no. of questions will be 100. Students are expected to solve two questions from each section so that he can solve total 10 questions. Now can the students be assigned any two random questions from each section... so that each student will get different 10 questions in different order. Is this possible?

well, first and for most it is an assessment to know if they really understand and learned the concept and one way to verify that is through quiz and exam. They can study the topic but will not be informed on what specific question will appear because when they do they will focus on that question to remember or prepare their answer. And because of that you are not assessing their learnings anymore because they are aware of the question. It will no longer test their ability in studying because the question is already known. That's why teachers need to prevent this to happen --- the leakage of assessment questions.

Thanks so much! I teach middle school computer science. Giving Grade 6 a quiz on hardware and software. I am teaching hybrid instruction and scheduling the quiz on two separate dates is a nuisance. Was concerned at home, virtual kids would be apt to cheat, but I agree with you, who cares? I already told them what will be on the quiz, I will time the quiz and tell them they can check the info. in the Google Classroom, if they get stuck...basicallly an open book (doc) test. This way they will have to know where to find the answers in the Google Classroom. I was also concerned with scheduling on two separate "in person" days because there may have been complaints with one cohort getting more time to study.

If you knew something about formative vs summative types of assessments, your commentary would be better suited and received. This was more of a lecture when I was looking for an honest discussion about the integrity of an assessment. Because we are a data driven culture in education, the accuracy of the data is critical. In formative quiz forms, there is no strict need to "guard" the answer set because students are "form"ing their understanding. These could be reading checks, bell ringers, exit tickets, etc.; however, with summative assessments, students must demonstrate a skill or stand in an SOL. "looking it up" is not a skill. I'd like to learn how others "protect" the integrity of their forms.

Thanks Mohamed and Shanna. But after listening to this I think I should have skipped to 11:01 and saved the time that I'll not get back. I'm thinking about his rant, and realize that when I'm asking students not only thought and knowledge questions in discussions I already am seeing this "Why do I want to know that? I can just Google it."

Could you also "stop sharing" the quiz after the class in which you give it? wouldn't that make it inaccessible? That is, make it "private"? Thanks for the video. The data validation thing I did not know. Seems very useful. Thanks!

The password is a great idea. Is it just to limit when the students have access to it? One pitfall with it is that the bottom of the screen says "never submit passwords through forms". I know you're not asking for a real password, but someone might get hung up on that.

What do mean report this? There is nothing inappropriate. You might not agree, but no need to report it for having a different perspective on things. Additionally, things have change so much from when I made this video that many of issues are now addressed with options that are available for giving a quiz.

I am not trying to pass any sort of judgement. I want to get us to think about our goals of the assessment first. If we are spending more time in avoiding cheating rather than developing high quality assessments, then we are missing out on something much more powerful.

How about this: Cheating is unethical. Benefitting from cheating reinforces this behavior long term. I don't want students learning this in my class, or benefitting from it. I have a responsibility to preserve the integrity of the system, and the validity of quizzes and tests. Teachers who fail to recognize the importance of morality in the educational system do more harm than good for their students.
