Whats changed in the way of recording Cockpit Audio? We go over 5 different ways to record it, and how to do it properly to get the most CRYSTAL CLEAR audio possible.
Our last option on the list may not be impressive, but it works. And it’s debatably “the right way”. It could work better, if we had a different headset so we decided to leave it in.
HUGE SHOUT OUT to NFlightCam.com for supplying some of the cables for today's solutions. They make a great product with amazing customer service. I highly recommend them and their cables for recording audio in your flights, especially since their solutions are all inclusive. You can check them and their other products out at www.NFlightCam.com. THANK YOU NFlightCam FOR SUPPORTING THIS VIDEO!

You sir are the real MVP. I was sitting here pondering how I could record audio for my flight sessions. All of this information is new to me. Yesterday I purchased a GoPro Hero 9. @flywiththeguys
@flywiththeguys 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for joining us! The inexpensive splitter, 1/4 to 3.5mm adapter, and aux cable should be all you need. Or, if the plane you fly has additional audio jack in the back seat, you can just use the 1/4 to 3.5mm adapter and a aux cable. And the GoPro audio adapter of course. Buy that from go pro though, cheaper there. OH and make sure to plug the adapter into the camera and set the audio to line in. =)

With the digital audio recorder, they make a cable that is 1/4 inch to 3.5mm, so you don't really need an adapter. And if you forget to clap, it's works to listen for the click on the video when you turn the avionics master on. Usually when you do that, there's a "pop" in the audio that you can sync the two up.

I typically use the GoPro adapter input method. A lot of the audio quality in the aircraft comes down to the Intercom system being used, Regardless Of headsets and mics. I fly with the Bose A20 mostly, or another Bose product. It would be nice to figure something else out to get really good audio in the cockpit, but it’s such a noisy environment.

You might have fixed my issue. I have been getting unacceptable white noise from my GoPro audio connection. I have always had the GoPro plugged into power to the plane's USB plug too. I will try it next time without being plugged in. Might not fix all my issue, but it is a theory worth checking out
@flywiththeguys
@flywiththeguys 3 жыл бұрын
2 things. If you're plugging in from your intercom, set the gopro to line in. The intercom is usually too hot for the gopro mic input and will generate noise. Second, use the battery. The power from the plane can create feedback from the alternator. Good way to check this is to change RPMs in the plane. If the white noise changes pitch, it's the culprit. Using a external power source fixes this problem completely. Good luck!

Thats how I use the recorder now, in the back. I did find out (the hard way) that on some new audio panels, they can turn off ATC radio transmissions to the passengers. So passengers, typically in the back, don't hear ATC or talk over the pilot when they push to talk. Kind of defeats the purpose of what we're doing, but just something to look out for.

@flywiththeguys Thank you for this! I've been wondering how to do this. I can't believe you've had this available for 4 years and I hadn't seen it before. I'm a student pilot and approximately 1 lesson away (according to my CFI) from first solo. I'd LOVE to be able to record that flight so I purchased the components you suggested to be able to record through my Rode Wireless Go II mic and my Samsung S24. I was able to us it to record audio on a recent less as "proof of concept," but got a significant amount of electronic "noise" on the recording. I wonder if you've had any experience with this and what solution (e.g. some sort of inline electronic noise filter) you might have found to combat this. Any other ideas are welcome as well! Again, thank you for the content you produce and share with the aviation community!
@flywiththeguys
@flywiththeguys 25 күн бұрын
When you plug into the RODE it's trying to power a MIC into the intercom system. That's probably where the feedback is coming from. I'm not sure of any adapters that can help with that. Try recording right into the phone and see if that fixes the problem. Thats why in the video I was saying to switch to line in. This turns off powering a mic, which eliminates feedback, blowout, and electrical interference. Second to that, the radio signals in the plane could be the culprit, interrupting the wireless signal. This makes me want to try it out with my wireless setup!
@noblesvillemccarleys
@noblesvillemccarleys 24 күн бұрын
@@flywiththeguys Great thoughts. I'll try this. I thought plugging the adapted headphone line into the "line in" port on the RODE would eliminate this, but you're probably right about the inherent interference. May have to go dig out the *really* old GoPro and try to figure out the battery issues there to go that route instead. Thanks again for the content AND for the feedback (no pun intended)!

Audio recording a flight absolutely saved my ass when I had to make a complaint regarding some ATC procedures at a controlled airfield that were flat out dangerous. If I hadn't had that, they wouldve thrown me out.
@flywiththeguys
@flywiththeguys 4 жыл бұрын
I usually fly recording audio no matter what. It's kind of like those people who always drive with a dash cam. Lucky, ATC is always recording transmissions in their airspace. Mark the time and frequency, then call the ATC tower and ask to speak to a supervisor. They can pull the digital recordings and verify things. The recordings are kept for about 15 days. I've had some fun run ins with ATC, just remember they can be under a lot of stress.
@smokingspitfire1197
@smokingspitfire1197 4 жыл бұрын
@@flywiththeguys I asked for that and was promptly ignored! It's a small airfield here in the UK which has a bit of a corrupt ownership. I'll be very hesitant to fly there again. The recording (and camera) saved me from them retaliating, they have a reputation for doing so! Stress is okay, but when an aircraft explicitly calls asking for help and you leave them for nearly 10 minutes on their own, after repeated calls clearly asking for assistance, you've not really done your job. I have a huge amount of respect for the vast majority of controllers, these guys were being ridiculous.

If the Hero 6 is in the GoPro "cage", which as far as I know is the only way to mount the camera, there's no way to plug the cable into the camera. The cage blocks the access to the port. Thanks for the tips! I tried recording through my iPhone, using a third-party recording app (Voice Record Pro) and the splitter/3.5mm cable/3.5mm to lightning adapter setup. I ran into a couple issues: 1. My iPhone and recording app both won't recognize any audio source through the lightning port. 2. I can't hear anything through the headset speakers when both the headset and the audio cable are plugged into the splitter, but strangely, at the same time, I can hear music playing from my iPhone. It's almost like the lightning port is acting like an output and refuses to be an input. I think the problem may be with the 3.5mm cable, as it is TRS and not TRRS, but I'm not sure if that's all I'll need to make this work. Maybe I'm overcomplicating things a bit and should've just gone with the NFlightCam... Any thoughts?
@flywiththeguys

You're really close! You need that TRS to TRRS adapter to make it work. It aligns the mic inputs properly, otherwise the phone thinks the input is just a set of headphones and outputs to it. BUT, I have seen people struggle getting it to work right. The Nflightcam cable works really well if you want to keep using your phone, but for the same price you can get a voice recorder.

I think you're talking about the GoPro audio adapter. You can buy that directly from GoPro's website. So from the go pro to the headset jack: GoPro> GoPro Audio Adapter> Aux Cable (3.5mm Each End)> 3.5MM to 1/4" Adapter> 1/4" splitter or direct to headset jack. Hopefully that makes sense. I should add this to the description.

@flywiththeguys
@flywiththeguys 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your complement! I've learned a bit more since making this video. A lot of those jacks are meant for Aux input for music or audio from an iPad. BUT, because of how they're wired, they can also act as MIC outputs because the mic and aux are both wired to the speakers in the headset. So whatever you hear through the headset can "pass through" the port to a recording device. This isn't always the case, like the Bose A20 have a Aux port on the box attached to the cable. This is fed to a logic board so its not wired directly to the speakers, thus it cant "pass through" to a recording device. Hopefully that makes sense. So in the sense of that headset, it's possible it could pass through. It's a simple headset design. But I can't guarantee that it would work unfortunately.

I recorded audio yesterday with a splitter from the plane jacks and to the Bose A20 and to a Zoom recorder. I had the audio on the Zoom (similar to the Sony) set to auto level. My voice to the ATC was perfect but his was severely distorted and way, way hot to the point of almost not understandable. So I'm thinking the level coming from the airplane is just to hot. Have you encountered anything like this. I'm thinking maybe set the recorder to manual and lower the gain severely but it seems that will reduce my voice gain which is fine now. Ideally,, it would be nice to have 2 audio tracks to edit. Your thoughts. Do you manual adjust the Sony or leave on auto? thanks. Great info BTW.

Yes, the audio coming from the plane is a bit overpowering and can easily become distorted on recording devices. On my GoPro's and Sony I have to set the input setting to Line In.
