The five uses are: chop and drop the grass clippings onto the lawn; use the grass clippings as a mulch on potted plants; add the grass clippings to your compost pile; make a compost tea from your grass clippings; and mix your grass clippings and garden soil to jump start new beds.

When you are making grass clipping tea, it’s helpful if you inoculate it with either a couple handfuls of leaf mold or compost. It really gets the micro organisms activated. This is also called Jadam liquid fertilizer

Fresh grass already has tons of microorganism activity...but you're right! I also supercharge with a handful of both finished compost and leaf mold. It definitely speeds up the decomposition process! I switch between an anaerobic process and an aerated aerobic process. Man! The anaerobic process reeks terribly though!👍

My concern is with the weed and feed I apply to the lawn. It's required to use a weed killer in our neighborhood. (I know--long past time to move.) So, the best I can do is mulch it back into the lawn which is exactly what I do. I'd love to be able to use the clippings on my garden beds, though. Is there affordable organic weed and feeds that won't hurt my vegetable beds?

@@davidisaacson9328 that’s a good rule of thumb. What I ended up doing was I tested those grass clippings by soaking them in water a few days and then watered a bean plant with it which actually made it grow better. Beans are highly sensitive to 2,4-D contamination. My lawn grass got washed with rain and sprinklers everyday before it was clipped so there was negligible herbicide remaining

I used grass clippings for several months this year as mulch in my beds and containers, and in my compost pile. I took leftover clippings to my local community garden every couple weeks and they were put to good use! Unexpectedly at the end of August, my landlord had the front and backyard treated with chemicals to stop crabgrass/weeds. 🥺 I wish I was kidding, but I was so heartbroken. Especially since the lawns looked great despite 100°F-118°F temps for 2 months (thanks to the mulching option on the mower). We even had mushrooms in the back yard. I tried to hide my disappointment, but didn’t do a very good job. She felt bad and said she wouldn’t have it treated again. I’m wondering if it’s safe to start using again? Has enough time has passed to where I can start putting clippings in my compost again?

Grass get rid of those small insects flying from indoor plants. It also fertilize the plants. I have a plant that it was the same way for years, !!!! and it did not grow I changed position, more soil, report it NOTHING!!! until I put grass as mulch , the plant grew over night, more leaves big leaves and dark green in the same way for indoor plants.

To me, keeping a well manicured lawn just because it looks nice is a waste of time, effort, and resources... I now use my lawn to both directly and indirectly feed me. I haven't quite figured out the balance of growing space vs grass for compost/mulch yet though.

Sounds like you must not live in a very densely-populated area, have neighbors living close by... or own your own home. Having a tidy, nice looking property, in any demographic, definitely holds or even increases your home/property value.

@@davidisaacson9328 actually live in a standard neighborhood in town... And I mow my yard. Fairly often actually. I just don't do it to please my neighbors or for some worthless sense of vanity. I do it for the grass clippings to feed my garden which helps feed me. Besides, I wouldn't live anywhere that had an HOA. Last thing I need is a bunch of self-important Karens trying to enforce their opinions on property they don't own.

1 to 4 is 25% dude. _Not 20%_ (but I'll bet I'm not the first person to tell you that!)

It actually is. Ratios mean 1 part to 4 parts so 5 parts in total and 100 ÷ 5 is 20
