IDK if this is going to help anybody but I live in zone 5, winter is pretty harsh. I cannot keep pots outside they freeze solid and kill what ever is in it. However I love growing my strawberries in pots so when mid fall hits my garden (its very small only like a 5feet by 5feet... apartment life is rough lol) is pretty much empty so I transfer my potted strawberries into my garden, then I follow pretty much the same thing they just described here in this video, and when spring hits i just shovel 5 inches under my strawberry plant and repot it. my plants produce. not as much as if they were growing in my garden though. not sure if thats because they get relocated, because they are in pots or because of the variety.

Thanks for this video. I’m in southern Vermont zone 5. I missed my opportunity to get about 20 strawberries - that I threw into pots as bare rooted plants in the spring - into the ground. I still don’t know where they’ll go, other plants need to move. It’s been freezing at night into the 30s, 20s and teens F. Daytime temps barely above freezing, I’m in shade so no sun warming here. Ground is frozen in some areas but not in others. About to get a warm up for 3 days plus rain then some snow. All the strawberries are still in pots inside of unheated areas, they’ve experienced some frost already & been frozen and thawed. There is green foliage still, they’re so hardy! I have the Cavendish from Nova Scotia that are super hardy zone 3-7. I’m keeping them out of the freezing outside in case i still can put some in the ground. There will be thick snow cover here, no doubt, plus i have tons of leaves for mulch. I can plant them as dormant in the ground during the upcoming thaw, heel them in inside pots, or keep as is inside unheated areas that may reach similar temps to z7 though probably much milder (this option is my least favorite due to maintenance and watering and humidity issues inside). What do you think? Thanks!

I am in zone 7. I have 21 container grown plants in a stacked tower structure. After a couple of mornings of lite frost, I pruned them back, leaving only a few baby leaves on each plant and brought them into my uninsulated enclosed porch, which faces sort of north east, which tends to remain 5-10 degrees above the outside temperature. My plan was to eventually put them up against the outside wall of the house and cover the entire structure with a blanket, once the overnight temperatures were dropping to freezing, which is likely in the next couple of weeks. I didn't mulch them at first because I wanted to soil amend, and now they are still growing a bit, making a few flowers. Should I mulch and cover now to stop them from growing any more?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jennifer, I answered in the other video, so I'll cut and paste it here: I think you've done everything right Jennifer. Zone 7 with those towers means that they can't just be left exposed. It feels like they warmed up a bit and burst some buds, and that happens. I wouldn't mulch just yet as that is going to warm them up even more! Wait until they really stop growing....then mulch. Hello, the chilling demand (dormancy) depends on the variety of the strawberry plant. For example, Californian strawberry plants like Albion require 18 days of cold, but other varieties require two months. When you are in zone 10, there is no natural cold zone for the strawberry plant, and yet they continue to grow, the strawberries will just be smaller and less abundant. So it is quite possible to continue strawberry production in your garage with artificial lighting. But ideally, if you want to plant them in the spring in the garden, you should give them a chilling period at a temperature between 6 and 1 degree Celsius.

Endless bounty? We got Zero strawberries this year - they were a disaster. (:

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Really not sure tbh - they were just very bad - we also tried hanging strawberry setups as well - covering when heavy rain was predicted. Very disappointing tbh. We had a bad bout of rain/sun/rain/sun.

@@Joseph_Dredd yeah, our summer had two heat waves... Just decimated anything in smaller containers that wasn't able to buffer the moisture loss

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms We had a typical british summer! Short on the sun, but when we had it fairly decent. Intermittent rain ,and worse , an early cold patch which hit our tomatoes with blight. Some of the tomato plants with partial blight(in greenhouse) survived and went on to produce some superb red tomatoes though. :)
