The bigger joke is that people buy 4k blu ray movies but don't actually understand and know that most of these movies are not filmed in 4k because it takes too long to render everything out. This isn't run of the mill DRM though, this is directly CPU enforced, even the OS has zero knowledge of the key or the unencrypted media file content. Mature implementations are going to be damn near impossible to break, which is a pretty frightening thought because the ease of piracy has been one of the forces that has kept media companies from going beyond merely PITA DRM and enclosed ecosystems to all out, no holds barred extortion at every level, every feature.
@Gameboygenius7 жыл бұрын
+Joe Chief The essential secret in the system is the cryptographic keys hidden in the chips. What people can do is to decap the chip and read out the cryptographic keys using various methods, such as electron microscopy or probing the chip with needles to pick up the internal signals. Those methods are by no means trivial, especially since the chips have special protection mechanisms against them, but in the end it's just a battle against the clock. Nothing is truly secure.

Gabbiadini Hey, I tried mpc hc but could not get it to output to my receiver in Bitstream for the receiver to do the decoding. Tried powerdvd and could get that to output bitstream. If I close the file and restart it though it goes back to pcm output though. So I have to go back into "settings" then "more audio settings" then WITHOUT making any changes exit out of settings then it goes back to bitsream! So can get it to work but a bit of a pain to do that each time. Compared visually and did not look much different to me. Compared CPU usage in windows task manager and for VLC CPU useage averaged 10% and in Powerdvd CPU usage averaged 1%. I am using Powerdvd 16 that I noticed I already had on my PC. Tested on a Better Call Saul S03E06. Bit rate: 34.0Mbps, 3840x2160.
@kornboy227 жыл бұрын
Yea it was only 1% for powerdvd. Have my PC in the lounge so my 65" TV is my PC monitor basically. Have a 5.1.2 setup. I love it! Just followed that link you gave me and made the changes and now bitstreaming works! yea I missed that tab oops. thanks! mpc hc CPU usage is 0% haha. Compared all 3 and its really hard to tell the difference video wise. I would think that the audio should be the same for all 3 because it is bitstreaming (raw data) to the receiver then the receiver is doing the encoding. My CPU is a 3930K OC'd to 4.3, 16GB ram, 980TI and still on windows 7. Mostly game, internet and watch downloaded stuff. Looking at buying a new PC but mine still works fine. Threadripper and skylakeX look more like server CPUs. Only really need 6 or 8 cores for a bit of future proof as games still only opzimited for 2 or 4 cores at the moment. I like Ryzen 7 but they only offer 16 PCIe so cant really use more than 1 GPU or get any M.2 drives. Probably wait for coffeelake/cannonlake/icelake to see what they offer. Thanks for your help. At the same time the internal processing inside of a small streaming stick can handle pushing 4k content, there's no way my overkill gaming rig cannot. I'm not going to spend hundred upon hundreds of more dollars just to upgrade my motherboard and other components just to spend even more on the latest generation processor. I love to support film productions by doing my part by purchasing copies and paying for the films that they make but all this really does is make pirating movies and TV shows an even better, easier, and smarter option.

The reason piracy is there is BECAUSE the movie industry went away from making good films and good money from them..to making money with a who gives a shit if the film is good so long as the target audience is as wide a possible to make a progit - aka how disney destroyed Star Wars now. More and more shit films with overuse of CGI less real acting and a wooly cosy 'one size filts all' taktic to fim making. Yes all those Cert12 films that could be 15 and all those 12a that could be a 15 and those that are 15 that could be 18 rated.....drop the swearing that used to be the step up from PG to 15 and the then 18 films where just better in general with not much swearing. I own many good films on blu ray, many i'd already seen as a pirate version 1st. In every other industry if you are not happy with something you can get your money back - except film...so that means the industry can produce shit and people must pay for it anyway?? NOPE AKA why ther is piracy, wach before you buy. Rental costs through sky are nuts and Disney has lady fcking Gaga (poke her face) song at the ends of kids films so you can guess how much Disney gives a shit about anything other than $$$$$ now.

@joechief24567 жыл бұрын
It's not really "overclocking" though, and that distinction is important because the monitor is unchanged, the GPU is just doing extra processing. It's closer to antialiasing for media content than "overclocking to 4K" - in fact, SSAA in modern games is literally just rendering at a higher resolution and downscaling to the target resolution.

Or The cheapest HTPC that can render 4K videos and be able to run games such as Battlefield 1, GTA V, Overwatch and Ghost Recon Wildlands Thanks in advanced. :)

The answer to all your questions is probably software patents and content licensing restrictions. For WIndows to be able to play Blu Ray or DVD out of the box, Microsoft needs to actually pay organizations for that "privilege" the idea is that Microsoft has to effectively pay per-unit to distribute software that is able to decrypt the DVD or Blu Ray Content, because the DVD Forum and Blu-Ray Consortium (or whatever they call themselves) own exclusive license to the methods to decrypt the content of the discs. Which is, of course, really dumb. Technically even a 100% open source implementation requires that the technique be licensed. Thankfully, some software projects- like VLC, are based in countries like France, where software is not recognized as patentable. This allows VLC to support DVD out of the box and it can be extended to play Blu Ray fairly easily. For streaming content, again we can see it is via licensing once more- basically, Content providers have strict requirements regarding how their content is delivered and as it happens only Edge via Windows 10 have implemented the strict DRM controls that they dictated as being required. This is also why the 4K content requires a Kaby Lake Chip, as that is the only chip that is able to decode the proprietary DRM encryption effectively enough to actually stream the content.
@SirQuacks7 жыл бұрын
Cory R The DRM stuff is bull but blu ray player wise the new 4K blu rays have extra layers of data some blu ray players can't read because they don't have the right optic sensor to do so. Same reason why DVD players can't read blu rays.
@j-man72b727 жыл бұрын
Sorry Sir, that's incorrect, DVD's use red lasers, they physically can't read the data, because Blueray uses Blue lasers, the wavelength permits higher data density and the red laser just can't pickup the data.

It's September 2022 and I am JUST getting into trying to play 4K video on my new 4K TV (one's from Samsung and the other will be from LG). The part that I am struggling a little bit with now is that trying to play the videos over Plex requires at least transcoding the audio, which is leading to buffering issues, so I am trying to do some more research in order to try and find out what I can do about it short of setting up a mini PC to be able to handle the hardware accelerated decode.
