Interesting and somewhat important note on compressor surge: ON-THROTTLE surge is VERY BAD! That's when the turbo is actively trying to compress against air that is rushing back into the compressor housing and causes catastrophic damage if done for too long. OFF-THROTTLE surge as shown in the video is still not good on the bearing but it's significantly better than on-throttle. This is because the exhaust is not forcing the compressor to spin. Some cars had off-throttle surge from factory i.e., Mitsubishi Evos. You can run off throttle surge for many years and your turbo will be fine, most likely your turbo will eventually fail due to other factors such as oil starvation (unfortunately from experience).

8:55 that's a common myth about having no blow off valve. In reality myself and loads of other people run without blow off valves for years on various cars and have never ever had any damage to turbos. @boostaddict_53 минут бұрын
Correct. Compressor surge is only really an issue if it's happening under load for a sustained period, meaning the pressure ratio and flow rate is too high for the engine and the boost is flowing back through the compressor wheel causing some really violent shock load.

@shadow1057202 сағат бұрын
@carltonleboss but you need the ecu and wiring for the new engine which would be the motherboard around it. Usually you put in the transmission that matches the new engine so that could be the gpu. It would be fun to slap something like 14900k into this laptop. Normally 14900k would get way too hot but with a cooling solution like this, it might be fine. However, modern laptops often have soldered CPU instead of using a socket which makes replacing the CPU next to impossible.

Good on Alex for putting the disclaimer in! A turbo has to have a turbine somewhere, this is just an electrically run compressor, a form of supercharger. There are electric turbos, but those have all the normal turbo bits plus an additional electric motor, which can do things like help spool up the turbo at low rpm to fill in before the exhaust flow is high enough, keep the turbo spooled when off throttle to reduce lag, and generate electricity by using the turbo as a generator when there's excessive exhaust flow (instead of using something like a blowoff valve etc. to limit the pressure).

*tries using voice chat in-game* Everyone else: "Are you gaming at an airport or something!?"
Plenty of cars in the 80's and early 90's were running around with turbos and no diverter valve and the turbo life expectancy was fine. Compressor surge isn't all that damaging on lower boost applications. If your car is running under 20 PSI... it's not really going to damage the turbo and should only ever happen when you close the throttle. I had a car running the stock turbo setup without a diverter valve. It was pushing 14 to 15 PSI and had close to 160,000 miles on the original Garrett T03 and was still going strong. Would have lasted longer if some dumbass in a Nissan Pathfinder didn't pull out in front of me while I was going 55 MPH at an intersection. Now, if you're running 30 PSI... that is a different story. Granted, you should know the difference if you're running that kind of setup. Where compressor surge becomes really bad is if you experience it under WOT. This can happen if the turbo is forcing in more air than the engine can take. In this instance a DV isn't going to help you anyways, and the fault is on you for not matching the turbo to your engine displacement. People tend to exaggerate how bad compressor surge is. It can be very bad, but it can also be negligible.

I am fairly certain by definition that a supercharger must be directly linked to the crank, and therefore inherently linked to the RPM of the motor. Rather than to the amount of exhaust gas partitioned through the turbo. This device can be spooled at any time, at any amount via electricity, so IMO Electric Turbocharger seems like the correct nomenclature Also yes Linus, reducing the diameter of a pipe transferring fluid, reduces the flow rate. This works the same in rifle cartridges, plumbing, and in fact crowds moving in tunnels.
@mcgherkinstudiosСағат бұрын
Technically a supercharger is a device which compresses the intake charge to above atmospheric pressure. The means by which it’s driven isn’t actually applicable. A turbocharger is, to use its full name, a turbosupercharger, a supercharger driven by a turbine. However it’s generally accepted that a turbocharger is driven by exhaust gas and a supercharger is driven by *something else* be it mechanical or electrical means.
