Who is going to ride their bike to a local gate or signal just to try tripping the sensor? I promise it works!

Too bad it's a bit harder to tip a 300 pound motorbike like that. Luckily, at least for traffic lights that won't trigger, we can call that a malfunctioning signal light, and therefore legally treat the light as a stop sign, after waiting a credible little while for the light to fail to change. At least that's how traffic law works here in BC, and I would expect that's usually the law elsewhere.

Just a safety tip for your shop. Don't leave flammables(fuel) outside your shop. Its a good idea to buy a flammables storage cabinet and keep those flammables in the cabinet, in your shop.

Even on motorcycles there are some stubborn traffic lights that just won't change. Of course, tipping something that weights 800 pounds is a little more problematic. I find that if you have one of those strobing lights that's visible in daylight, the traffic signals are more likely to sense that I'm there.

To Tip #3 about waving, I'd add that there are times when you might want to wave but taking your hand off the handlebar doesn't seem like the best idea. In those cases another kind of wave is to keep your thumb & palm engaged the grip but raise your fingers to gesture the acknowledgement. The gesture can also include a brief nod of the bike helmet for additional emphasis. I find myself doing this a lot and not just to other riders. Riding in my neighborhood I make the friendly gesture to acknowledge neighbors (who may be walking, driving their car or out mowing their lawn). I also like to acknowledge car drivers who've extended me some curtesy like giving me the right-of-way while they wait for me. Not only am I thankful but I hope in such circumstances the modest acknowledgement of their kindness will encourage them to continue to be courteous to bikes riders.

Yeah that tipping the bike does work, even though I have tripped those sensors with a metal dust pan. However, a lot of traffic signals are moving away from those style of sensors, and starting to rely on the use of Camera's. Now those Camera's are supposed to detect a person standing on the roadway intersection, however, sometimes they do not but a small flashlight will trigger a camera sensor to recognize a bike or person is at the intersection. If you do not have a flashlight, a small mirror will often trip the camera sensors if you can produce enough of a reflection from a light source. FYI I use to work for a road construction company, and this is what DOT told me when we was installing a new intersection that had camera's instead of sensors in the ground.

Not too long along I saw a clip showing the camera feed from an intersection that had a cyclist outlined in a rectangle as a recognized object. Seems to be working well here in the Phoenix area as I often get the green left turn arrow even when I'm the only vehicle there. There are also a few bike lanes that have the ground sensor installed, presumably set to a higher sensitivity.

Standing the bike up to manoeuvre - If you have full coverage rear fenders (and/or stuff on a rear rack), just be careful with how far you tilt the bike over, especially if going down a stairway! Speaking of which, make sure you keep hold of that rear brake as it can help you control the bike as you 'drop' down each step. Also need to watch out for the angled ceiling above the stairway!! And it's of little use going up the stairs unless you're going backward

Here in Massachusetts, there are signs at some intersections that say something like: "bicycles stop here for green." I used to think this was a very odd instruction and felt like defying it... "I'd rather go on green than stop." It turns out that they were indicating where a bike should go to activate the green light sensor.

An easier way to trip the gate or stoplight mechanism is to place a good size magnet on the bottom of your bike that way the metal detector circuit embedded in the road will be able to pick up the device you are riding. This works for all types of equipment and transport such as scooters, motorcycles, skateboards, and cars that are small or have a lot plastic parts

I have a Steadyrack and need to put it on it's back wheel to park it. I have been flicking it up because that is how they do it in all the promotional videos but it's a 23kg e-bike so it's not that easy. I thought it might be easier if I could just have something behind the bike to allow me to pull it up, never occurred to me to use the brake to hold it. So much easier using the brake; it's one of those Doh! why didn't I think of that a year ago?

I often wondered if it's the 'metal' that signals the sensor, but are you saying it's the 'mass' Kyle? Many e-bikes are aluminum now, so it it were where a steel frame was needed, I originally 'thought' you would need steel within your frame, but I'm now assuming that's not the case. Years ago, I was delivering a large truck to an Electric Company locally, and after putting it in it's location, the gate closed and couldn't figure out how to get the gate to open...so upon looking around the site a bit, I found an empty 45 gallon drum, and rolled it over to where the sensor was, and it then opened of course. :)

If you live in a gated community, you should have the spot stripped for bikes so if you are in just the right spot, you will trip the gate. If the gate is such old technology that it won't trip, make sure it is mentioned in the maintenance reports so if any work is ever done on it, it will be upgraded. We have to have our town tell the state to repaint the symbols when they repaint the road each time. I don't know why the state contractors can't remember to do it. In WA state, you have to wait for an entire light cycle before you can assume it isn't working for your bike or motorcycle.

Didn't know the sensor trick. On the other hand mileage may very on standing the bike on the rear wheel to navigate hallways and doors. If you have a full rear fender it might be in the way. Alternatively your bike may be slightly too long to get through the door standing up like that. I have both issues on my ride. If I lean back to the balance point my fender drags and the front wheel hits the door jam.

So far I have not needed to go through a business gate, but, a "gated community" usually has a gap between the gate and end post for foot traffic and a bicycle will fit through it. When it comes to a traffic light i will turn right and cross the street behind the crosswalk and then turn right to continue on my path...providing no traffic will hinder that action...NEVER DO THIS WITH TRAFFIC.

As long as the voltage of your controller and battery match, the amp/hour doesn't matter. You could run a 100 amp/hour battery if you wanted to. On my RadWagon I carry the stock 14 A/h battery as well as a 24 A/h for extra range.

@@Xubuntu47 It can help but there may be tire slippage and you'll still have to do some pushing. Having knobbies mounted is easier because the knobs can grab the edge of the step. If your throttle isn't too sensitive and you can apply it just a pinch, it might work better than walk mode. I never had to do 4 floors tho, just about 5 concrete steps. Maybe you oughta rig up a hoist that swings off your porch. ;)
