The talk about "standard" backpacking gear versus lightweight is really interesting, it made me think about a phenomenon I've noticed in a number of hobbies where especially if you're researching it on the internet you can get a skewed idea of how "everybody does it" because the people who are the most extremely invested and hardcore about that thing are often also the people who most likely to be heavily involved in online discussion spaces answering questions and giving advice (asked for or not), and so it's easy to get this wrong idea that everyone does a thing a certain way when there's actually a whole range of ways people are out there in the actual world doing it. If you only knew about backpacking from reading forums and reddit threads and what not you'd think every backpacker is an ultralight long distance through-hiker...

Yes! I've found myself really enjoying Eric and Miranda's content in particular because they acknowledge the different factions and explore both ultralight and "standard" backpacking as equally valid ways to experience the outdoors, rather than treating ye olde heavy backpackers as inferior, inexperienced, or outdated. I also think there's a safety angle. One of the biggest safety assets is your skill outdoors, and it's misleading for an experienced backpacker to say "you don't need that" when a less experienced person might not have the skill to safely enjoy their trip without it.

I love Miranda’s candidness. It’s so important that people who don’t struggle with health issues that impact their daily activities see what those of us who do have to deal with. As someone living with MS, many of the symptoms are very similar, so I am in awe that she is able to tackle these incredibly difficult hikes with such a positive attitude. Also, that hike looks amazing!!!!

This looks like a challenging trek but one I would like to do before I get too old to do it. They are all over the Cascades and live amongst the rock morraines.

1. The Farm to Summit Mac n Cheese was great! I made it with too much water though so I need a chance at redemption. 2. There was no dew. It was extremely dry out there so no need for a rain fly. 3. Cook pot is the Toaks 750ml pot and mug is the UCO collapsible camp cup (links in the description). Yes the handle on the TOAKS pot get very hot. Gotta be careful!

I think your assessment at the end was fair. You gave everything a fair shot on a longer, more difficult trip, with gear you enjoy and would enjoy maybe on something less of a duration or elevation and while you may have had a more enjoyable time with some more updated versions of the equipment, you got to test the equipment on a more difficult outing. And now you know. You guys can go and do the trip again, with a lighter pack and really see the difference and have that much more of an enjoyable time.

Stunning video! What a really cool trip! I have been on a couple of trips where (due to me not doing due diligence) we ended up hiking unmaintained segments. What an adventure! And this is also why I also build redundancy into my navigation system!!! For those moments where you're not sure where the trail could have gone off to. I hope you guys travel together again, you are all inspiring to watch! We can do hard things! The payoff is worth it!!! A 50# pack sounds brutal for a 5 day strenuous trip! What an awesome video! Thank you for sharing! I was able to score a permit for Lake Stuart at the Enchaments area last week. But we unfortunately had to leave earlier as expect, as my husband tore his calf muscle on the top of Aasgards Pass. With strong determination and trekking poles, we were able to make it down back to the trailhead just a little past midnight. We had amazing friends that helped us pack our gear and helped carry them back to the car. We absolutely loved the beauty of the Washington Alpine lakes and we would come back again!

I go either way with YT videos. Sometimes when I know I like the channel I look for the longer ones. But there are certainly a lot of KZbinrs who don’t edit well and their videos are just way too long. As for Miranda’s video. It’s good. These two compliment each other well and the videos don’t end up being repetitive. Also, in Eric’s video we get to see Rainer and that’s always a treat.

I'd be so curious if an uptick in interest in this trail could revive it. But at the same time, part of the magic of this adventure was figuring out how the heck to navigate it!

I hunt out in CO in the San Juan National forest and we head out from the main camp and set up a spike camp for 4-5 days, go back in and resupply and finish up with another 4-5 day camp. I use the Mystery Ranch Metcalf and its usually 60-70 lbs of gear and usually go 6-8 miles out to set up the camp. My ruck never sounded like yours. THAT would have driven me NUTS!! Unfortunately the light weight packs will not work. I need the meat shelf in the Metcalf to help load out the elk. without it, its NOT fun! Great video that is some beautiful scenery!

Great video! I love my MR Bridger, but it's mostly for canoe camping. I can totally see it being a beast on an actual hike- it gets a bit old even just on 1-2M portages! But man, if you want a pack that you KNOW will take a beating and just laugh it off it's hard to find anything more durable.

Hiked the chain lakes loop last week on our visit to northern Washington. All of the hikes we had planned were in for zones so we headed over to the Mt Baker wilderness for this treat! Thankfully it was quite a bit cooler when we were there.

A great job & vid Eric! Did a similar one, with similar weight (9 days food, instead of camera kit) and a disappearing trail. Same result,too: never again 50 lbs, and now have worked the kit down from 86 ltrs, to 80 (not a big step but on that one I can attach my skis) to 65 ltrs... And counting

Also, fun fact, I'm about 90% sure the white flowers that were everywhere in the meadowy areas was Hemlock. One of the easiest ways to tell between them and Queen Anne's Lace is the absence of the bract, or the little green tutu under the flower.

Looks like an amazing, memorable trip! Thanks for sharing, love it when my 2 most watched channels do a collab. Those were some incredible views (nothing like that near Toronto, closest would be the Escarpment). PS 1:06:50 I want to see the shining birds 😂

now everyone will flock to this and re-establish the trail...cool. I am pretty sure I did this in my 20's. It amazes me how many roads and trails have been left decomissioned since the early eighties...and now so many more hikers being funneled into all the same places that require permits. I spent 10 days up in the Enchantments before there were permits😊 Heck...I remember doing Blue Lake off Highway 20, and I was the only one on it that day. One question...how come you all didnt go for a dip...espevually during that heat wave🔥Thanks for the memories.

It would be kind of cool if this trip inspires other to get out there and help revive the trail. It would be nice to spread out the hikers who want the Enchantments to go here. And I bathed on the second night but mostly we didn't have time to swim since we spent the days hiking into the evenings!
