I went backpacking with ‪@MirandaGoesOutside‬ through the Alpine Lakes Wilderness in Washington. And it's a time honored tradition that I challenge them to a Battle of the Backpackers duel, where we compare our gear we're packing to see who has the best gear and to learn from each other's styles and preferences. Miranda spent several years hosting REI's KZbin channel and has been an inspiration to me as she set off on her own to run her own channel. I had a similar journey as I had hosted Backpacking TV for years before going independent and creating this channel. I learn a lot from Miranda, and this time is no different! She has some fun tricks up her sleeve to make backpacking more fun and enjoyable.

Love that this has a sequel! The gear battle series is one of my favorites for sure. Btw, haven't seen anyone else do this, but for my camp shoes I use the booties Miranda has and I put shoe covers on them that are meant for worksites. They're crazy light, store completely flat and are made of waterproof fabric (not plastic) and have a thicker soul with little grips on them. They're washable and have worked out really nicely for me 🤷

I love Miranda's LiteAF curve 46! I have the Curve 40. The most comfortable pack I've ever owned, and ultra light to boot! For bigger loads though, I'm not upgrading to the 46 .. Keeping my ULA Circuit which has treated me right for many years. Fun video both of you! Eric, I also use the Grayl, but the plastic version. One thing viewers should know is that the Grayl is a water purifier, not just a filter. It gets more nasty stuff out than the standard Sawyer, Katadyn, etc. As a kidney transplant patient on immunosuppressant drugs, I've found that the weight penalty of the Grayl is so much worth it. Plus the water tastes so much better than out of the normal filters, so even normal people would prefer the taste from it.
@eric_hanson
@eric_hanson 5 ай бұрын
You raise a great point about the Grayl. Yes, it's much better at removing all sorts of undesirables and I definitely notice the taste of the water improves in the Grayl vs regular filters. Thanks for bringing that up!

I would have to give the nod to Miranda this time. She also took you to my all time favorite hiking place! I like the fact that you both aren't afraid to modify your gear to suit your needs! I also like the idea of Eric vest support for the Mystery Ranch backpack. I don't think I will go back to one that heavy though as I carried 38 lbs. up to Colchuck Lake 5 years ago when I turned 66. I don't think I will ever go totally UL but trying to keep the weight down as I get older. I do like Miranda's gear, especially that solar light! I'm sure Miranda knows we cannot have ANY campfires in WA this time of year so it might be nice to at least get the feeling of a campfire even if it didn't have the warmth, LOL! I love NEMO equipment and my Feathered Friends Flicker Hybrid quilt/sleeping bag (the best of both worlds for people who just can't use quilts but want options lighter than a bag). Eric, I didn't know you drink Deathwish Coffee! I have to take that in my drinks bag too! 😂

This video touches on something I strongly believe, which is the REAL point of ultralight gear is to save weight on the essentials so you can can carry more ridiculous stuff that would give real ultralighters an aneurism at the mere thought of taking on a backpacking trip XD (this will be something different for everyone, for me it's mostly [1] more photography equipment and [2] supplies/tools for at least a meal or two of more ambitious camp cookery than "pour-water-in-a-bag")

I love Miranda's accessories, especially the drawing kit and games. I LOVE Eric's backpack! I'm gonna look into it for myself cuz I think it would be great for general travel and I mostly dispersed camp near my car so I don't need something lightweight but I need something more durable and customizable cuz I always struggle to find a backpack that really fits my torso and I love the way it clips in the front more thoroughly.

This is absolutely the franken-style perfect kit video! I feel like a want to be ultralight but I like my creature comforts. I am a larger lady who rolls around a lot at night, so having that big ole roomy tent would 100% be up my alley! I primarily do traditional car camping but it'd be nice to have some backpacker gear for times when I want to branch out or just make packing and unpacking my car easier solo.

I love the two chest straps of your pack, Eric. I have often wanted a second chest strap on my pack when out on trail, particularly when I do have some slightly heavier loads. Although I gravitate towards lightweight gear myself, I really appreciate the recent emphasis on budget-friendly gear.
@eric_hanson
@eric_hanson 5 ай бұрын
I really like the double chest strap and I've started to see other companies incorporate it into UL packs, such as Zpacks. Curious to see if more companies adopt it as I think it really improves the way a pack carries.

Wonderful and fun collab, as always. Both of you have been exploring a greater breadth of gear options this summer, exploring very valid budget options rather than purely deep dives into the most elite / UL / and unfortunately expensive gear (fun to watch for a while, until eaten alive by FOMO!). I love how you are able to pick up on great advice and great gear suggestions from each other, and make them your own. As to who had the best gear, I'm leaning a bit more towards Miranda's (LOVE HER AF BAG! COULD NEVER AFFORD IT!) but think I prefer your tent & sleep system. I picked up the NatureHike Mongar 2p this summer, haven't had a chance to use it yet, hope you get around to reviewing that, as I think it's a fairer comparison to the FS Granite than the Cloud Up in your recent reviews.

I aspire to be a backpacker one day. For now, it’s Cub Scout camping with the boy. Forever, and longer than I care to admit into adulthood, I always thought (because nobody told me otherwise) that I had to use the rain fly with my tent whether it was going to rain or not. Make the gear work for you… I’m sure summer nights would be a lot more comfortable without that fly holding the heat in.

Always love Miranda's backpack set up. She makes backpacking seem cozy. I even have a few similar items. Such as the solar blow-up lantern. Mine is color changing, though. I like the bear can so I don't over pack food for a trip. I agree that a mix and match of both your stuff would be awesome. I like your sleeping bag. Not sure if I'm a quilt type of girl. The Featherstone tent you have has been sold out for a few weeks now on Amazon, but the one person is still available but going fast. Perhaps they will have more available next season.? Who wins this round... Rainer, for holding the camera for you guys...lol I'm hoping you guys did a video of the trip. You all seem to have such a fun time together. Stay safe and have fun.

Love seeing two "you tubers" sharing the stage in a positive way. There's a saying "The lighter the gear, the lighter your wallet"😅 The Grayl is a purifier (filters out virus, etc) So it is way beyond a lifestraw. I found it to be a bit fussy and if you want to fill multiple bottles, there is a higher chance of contamination. For 1.75 oz more I have the MSR Guardian. Agree with Eric. Two person tent is the way to go. Always good ideas from Miranda and Eric. Thanks guys ( you too Rainer)

Nice to see people bringing a few extras instead of the ultralight fever thing. That is just too much. Maybe on a thru hike, but just for general backpacking it won't kill you to carry a couple extra pounds. Budget hikers have to do it out of necessity. Big deal. If you have a decent pack that puts the weight on the hips, it's not that important.

I have that exact same Nemo tent. The footprint size was what attracted me to this tent. I can fit it into some very small campsites. If you get claustrophobic, don't consider this tent - it is small. Also, one of the best colors for a tent that I've used. Relatively low-impact, but allows light to come in at about the right amount for me.

That $109 tent, man. It might be too heavy for backpacking, but it would be a great option for people trying out camping for the first time. Spending $600+ on a Nemo tent and another $600 on a comfortable sleeping system to find out if I like or hate camping alone would make me never even try. It makes me laugh you "need to win" haha. I started following you (cuz your trips are so hardcore that the content is equally awesome and intimidating) because of Miranda, who makes hiking seem could be an "everyone could enjoy a little" hobby. Miranda also does hardcore trips that I could only admire as of now, but I feel she was the bridge for me to start appreciating the rest of the backpackers in a way if it makes any sense?... ok now I am gonna go to her channel to praise you.

My two favorite pieces of gear I use are my Backpack and Tent. My backpack is the pilgrim ultralight Roan, it is expensive, however it is fully customizable. You can pick between 3 different internal storage capacities, 40L, 45L, and 55L, with an extra 12L or so of extra storage on the outside. It has a carbon fiber frame, and can supposedly comfortably carry 45 lbs and a max of 50 lbs. I haven’t tested it to those limits. My tent is kinda controversial, not in the sense of what tent it is but because of how i modified it. I use the Durston X-Mid Pro 2, but I cut out the netting and floor and made it so I could use the regular X-Mid 2 inner. I didn’t care for how particular I had to be in order to manage condensation, but I really like the dyneema fly material, so I fused the two and made a double wall X-Mid Pro 2.

One of my most favorite pieces of gear is with Erik and that is the Grayl titanium water filter, wich I have also, but not only is it a water filter it's also a water purifier. It not only takes out the bacteria but also removes viruses that may be in the water, not heard of viruses around here but it does a great job. May be why the price is so high Great video enjoyed watching very much.

I think the booties / sandals combo is brilliant. I need to get me a pair of the Teva style sandals so they can pair up properly.

My vote is for Eric. I get that the tent is 4lbs, but with the room it provides and the price being $450 cheaper it puts his load out over the top. Also chair over bear canister to sit on.

People dont get the mystery ranch backpacks. They are heavy, but they carry like a dream. I have the original zpacks arc blast and a newer Durston kakwa. They do great for 20lbs, but it tapers off beyond that. You can put the same load in the bridger and it carries like the whole load is 5-10 lighter than in the ul packs. Here’s the real trade off: if you’re trying to save your back, the bridger wins. But if you’re trying to are trying to save your knees, you want the ul packs.

I love Miranda's fun accessories, but in terms of price/weight/durability balance factors, I actually like Eric's gear more! With my particular body needs, gear that gives me more space, more adjust-ability, and more efficient weight transfer helps SO MUCH with pain and fatigue, in a way that just saving on weight really doesn't.

You know, Miranda mentioned LMNT helping with the migraines, but as a woman with dysautonomia (POTS being one category of dysautonomia) I am so glad I got into using LMNT. It actually works well for me and I faint quite a bit and have a few comorbid dx that makes the dysautonomia struggle more tedious with backpacking. (Sjrogrens syndrome, EDS, Bradycardia) I had one instance early on in my dysautonomia diagnosis where I went hiking, collapsed, and couldn't get back off the trail safely. My phone was on 14% and EMS had a tough time getting to me. I have long term head injury issues from fainting and hitting my head so much because of dysautonomia and that instance taught me the hard way that "no pain no gain" is such a dangerous phrase and that you need to listen to your body. I am so sorry to hear that Miranda has POTS, but I had a suspicion... while it sucks, I am glad I am not alone. Dysautnomia can be disabling and life changing especially if you end up being one of the lucky folks that doesn't "grow out of it" (some people do lose the dysautonomia issues after a few years, but I have had it since 2015 so...). Once again, Miranda making me feel validated.

On "mod's"... If I'm going with a group, I try to have a 'load-out get together night" for a kind of show-and-tell (and so I can see who I'm going with). The first thing I look at is their gear: Is it cheap crap? Is it well-worn? But I also look for GEAR MOD'S. If it's good gear, if it's well worn, AND there are modifications (better yet, if they fabricated some of it themselves), then I know they've made some tracks!

One thing on the Grayl is that it purifies, not just filters. So it removes viruses and some chemicals. Admittedly most places people go they aren’t at risk of water borne viruses. I’m off to Africa next month, so yeah, I’m taking mine 😊
