I've said before, and will say again, when you look at someone's finished product you cannot tell if they use top-of-the-line tools or Harbor Freight tools. That's because the skill of the product is in the worker and not in the tools that you use.

I started working with wood as a young, broke, single Mom, (40 years ago), when I needed a gift for a little girls b-day party. I made a Strawberry Shortcake name wall plaque with an old piece of 1x8 using my Dad’s really old jigsaw, one 3” C-clamp, sandpaper, paint and woodstain. All the other Moms at the party saw it and each of them ordered one for their kids. I learned how to use a router, won a Craftsman 14” bandsaw & drillpress when Sears had a scratch off coupon in the Sunday paper, and the rest is history, as they say. Wish I had had those F-clamps back then - have them now and many other affordable tools from HF. Loving your HF reviews - just subscribed, and will check out more of your videos!

Love your channel. I'm an older guy, in that I remember when you could go to the store, locally, buy a drill and it was made in the US. I still have a US made Stanley router. I go to HF for a lot of things because they're honest about what they're doing - inexpensive imported tools. Loyalty to a tool brand that's using off-shore labor makes just as much sense to me as being loyal to the girlfriend who's cheating on you. Be loyal to your family, your town, your state, your country. Not to a corporation. Now there ARE some US tool companies left, and if I can I'll use those. But the blue/yellow/green/red tool brands aren't those.

I’m 38 years old and been working on cars since my dad took me to the hobby shop on the navy bases since I was 12 years old. Even though I have a snap on tool box I have many tools from snap on, craftsman’s, dewalt, Milwaukee, gear wrench and harbor freight especially the Pittsburgh 301 piece mechanic tool set. The sockets torque bits, etc has lasted me years. I would tell the young kids getting in they don’t need to have snap on everything. For the everyday wear tear get the snap on or any of the higher end tools, but for everything else look around and save a few bucks here and there because at the end of the day a customer is not going to care what tools you use as long that you fixed their car and get them back on the road.

As far as the welders go, the little black box isn’t bad, but if you want to do more welding the Titanium Easy Flux is a great step up, I’ve been using that for 4 years now and it’s my go to welder.

I have several aluminum bar clamps and love them. Paul Sellers has a video where he cut a piece of wood to fit inside the rail (snug) and that stiffens them up quite well. Still they won't compete with high dollar clamps but for most cases we use them for, they work just fine.
@timothymbess2 жыл бұрын
I have the big aluminum bar clamps from HF. I bought mine because I needed clamps that would span +4ft for a big countertop project. Yes, they twist. You're not going to pull two mountains back together with them. But if you're relying on clamps for THAT much pressure, you probably have some twist in your boards or slop in your cuts. In most cases, a good firm hold is more than enough for the glue to set, and you don't need the pull of the sun's gravity to meld your workpieces together.

I have been a wood worker for real ten years I am 62 yo. I have bought the long aluminum clamps. Paul Sellers had a hack vid where you put scrape wood in the center and they do not deflect it took 5 minutes each clamp. I use alot of Harbor freight tools. I have used a WEN electric hand planer 4 in wide for a very long time for $36.. I looked at the Harbor freight the Wen seems better built. I have a 2 x 6 moon clamp which is 2 2x6s clamped on the workbench with two Harbor freight clamps so the whole think cost $20 it is sweet. If you spend alot of money on tools you don't make as much profit. I bought 2 Narex chisels and a paint can opening set. The Narex are beautiful.

I’m 30 and I started working in a cabinet and furniture shop 7 years ago and I currently have my own wood shop. To be honest, I’ve never bought their tools for woodworking. But I love HF for consumables, auto mechanic needs, shop tools (hand trucks, vices, etc.) and welding. I find that in general their woodworking tools are great for building and getting the job done, but not the best for the finer details and reliability. But, I will NEVER hate anyone for purchasing HF tools. If anything, I have greater respect those that use HF.

If you take a 3/4' board and cut it down to slide inside the bar clamps, full length, then dimple the metal to keep the wood from sliding out, you will not twist or distort the Harbor Freight bar clamps, been using them for years this way. Thanks for your reviews.

I'm 47 and have been a woodworker for 25 years. In that time I have broken one metal HF F-clamp (24 inch) using hand pressure. The bar split at a weak point and I was able to get it replaced on my next HF trip. I now have several and they are my go-to clamps for almost everything. Also, the Hercules 12" sliding miter saw is a beast. They compare it to Dewalt and I would agree. It's great quality, accurate out of the box and you can add a mobile stand which I highly recommend if you ever need to move it around to do flooring, moulding or outdoor with it.

I am 74 years old, and have been hobby woodworking over 60 years. I have seen a lot of "junk" come and go in that time. I am somewhat in agreement with you when it comes to Harbor Freight. I have a number of items in my shop that has come from them. Clamps being a number of those items. When it comes to Harbor Freight you need to be very picky. Some of their items are great and some of them are useless. Most of my clamps are from HF, and I love them. When I can buy 3 or 4 of theirs for the price of 1 from someone else, I tend to purchase the cheaper one. When it comes to electric tools, I tend to shy away from HF because they do not last, I want a tool I will still be using in 10 years. Their tools don't make it that long. I have other brands I have had over 10 years and will probably still have 10 years from now. HF can't make that time. I have a cut off grinder I bought from them 4 or 5 years ago that I needed for one project and I thought the cheaper one would be able to do that one project then who cares. I still have it and still use it occasionally. I am impressed with it. That is the exception to the rule though. I would not have expected it to last this long. On the other side of the argument, when buying "Brand Names" you don' always get what you pay for either. Most high end brand names are expensive because of the name, not because they are worth more. Best advice I can give is don't buy the cheapest or the most expensive. The midrange expense tools are usually the best bargain. I have just recently found your channel and am impressed. Keep up the good work.

I'm 55, have been working with wood on small and medium scale (not counting a summer as a carpenter's helper) for about 30 years. I appreciate the really nice stuff and can certainly understand the difference between, say, a high end router and one from Harbor Freight. I can tell the wood burn marks if you use a cheaper bit. Poor (read: imperfect) sanding jobs drive me nuts. But I've used everything, including manual draw knives and auger drills, so tool snobs can bite my tuckus. If a tool you have can do the job you need it to do, the pretty brand name on its side is just paint.

I saw someone else also commented on Brad point drills. They go where planted, will not wander. Also predrilled with a center point drill (a machine tool product). They will not wander and a standard twist drill will stay in hole. Think of the twist drill wandering on steel. The center drill makes a hole the twist drill will follow. Just look at the business end of a twist drill and you will see a chisel point not a pointy point. That is why the twist drill will wander and the center drill makes a large enough hole to take the entire chisel point. Your hole was still off slightly when you used your brass "power" punch. But great for screws. I have been woodworking and metal working for about 60+ years.

Talk about "This Ol' House" and DIY!!! I've built and engineered cabinets for bathrooms, kitchens, photographic darkrooms (my Daddy's), mostly with a Skil-saw and good board for an edge guide. HF stuff mostly isn't as bad as reported, but it isn't made for 40 hour a week service either. Their "C" clams(sic) work as good as the high priced ones, will break if over stressed or dropped wrong on a concrete floor like the high-end brands. I bought a Harbor Freight variable speed multi tool 5 years ago, about 20-25 bucks, to do a single project, I’m still using it today, it’s been indispensable on so many jobs, cannot imagine a better return on investment!

I'm 55 and I've been working with wood (seriously) since I bought an older home 30+ years ago that was built in the 1870's... I've used bargain tool brands when I didn't have much because I had to, but due to my willingness to learn new skills and techniques I've always been happy with my finished products. Now with that said, your series on the Harbor Freight tools has been very interesting, as there are some real finds that have been showcased. Keep it up!

Your story is very similar to mine except I'm about 20 years behind in age!

Wow, I wish I saw this yesterday! I just paid $12/14 for a center punch at Lowe's! I didn't even think to check out HF first. I get a lot of things from there, clamps, t-squares, sand paper...you name it

I'm 66. Been playing with wood, off-and-on, for decades. Retired now, and wife and I are closing on a new home in a week or two, and the new home has a huge garage. I will be upping my game from "playing with wood" to "working with wood"-- things are about to get serious! And, yeah, I'll be starting a bromance with Harbor Freight...

Hey! Love your vids! I’m 68, been woodworking as a hobby for at least 30 years off and on. I’m a red guy, Bessey, and have too many said no one. I also have many HF F ones. Certainly not as well made as the Bessey but I’ve yet to have a problem where they didn’t work as needed. Accumulated some DeWalt triggers too and they are great! Thanks again for your great vids!

That punch works almost as good as a simple cheap nail.

I am 57 and have been woodworking for a few years now. We do not have Harbor Freight here in Canada, but I am planning a trip to the US soon to go there. There is a place for cheap things in the shop. For instance, the clamps you showed will be perfect. I am not using that much pressure... your videos are helping me to speed up my visit!

I use the moving blankets a lot. They make a great ground work pad if you have to lay down on concrete to work on a vehicle or under a bench fold one over and so much better on the knees and back.

I’m 62 hrs old, and I started working with wood and tools as a hobby about 8 years ago. I love your videos and tutorials. Most of my tools are from Harbor Freight because I’m not a professional wood worker, and they work just fine for me.

I'm 54. Been seriously doing woodworking about 12 years now. I still have a LOT of Harbor Freight tools, including the electric planer you showed here. I also have a hand held belt sander from them. I've had both about 10 years...and they both still work. Most of my clamps are from HF as well...and do the job just fine.

3 months is a good start! Hopefully you’re still buying HF in 3 years!

Having watched all of theses series vids about HF I’m even more convinced that there are certain items that perform as well as others for less $$. Thanks for the effort in doing these.

47, just started woodworking last year, nothing wrong with harbor freight tools. They are cheap and good enough to get you started, after awhile, if they break, buy a new one, or upgrade to something better, if you sit around waiting until you can buy all the best tools, you’ll never get anything done.

Another good HF clamp is the pipe clamps. Granted, you’ll have to go to Lowes or the Homie Depot to get the pipes but the clamps themselves work well.

I'm 62 years old and I've been working with wood for 25 plus years. HF is the place to go for what I call consumable products, one time use and a starter tool until you can afford the best. Been using HF for more than 10 years. Great video.
