NO RIM BRAKES RULE FOR THE ROAD :)

Rim brakes really aren't any more affordable than disc brakes at the end of the day, plus disc brakes are objectively better than rim brakes in practically every way, barring marginal differences in aerodynamics and weight. I agree with you on mid range Groupsets though,
@glharlor

@@comeridewithmeAE They are far worse in terms of maintenance and care. The only time they are objectively better is in mountain terrain. Bleeding brakes is much more complicated than anything required in rim brakes. They can be extremely noisy if they get anything on them. They also bend quite easily. Lastly if the wheel is off and you pull the brake, you have to completely re-set them up.

For some bike items, it's not so much a matter of wishing they didn't exist as it is a matter of wishing they weren't supplanting what has already existed and should continue. Disk brakes are fine for those who want them, but we shouldn't allow to push rim brakes on high-end bikes out of existence. Integrated cabling is fine for those who want it, but again, we should still be able to get fully external routing on a high-end bike if we want it. I know the arguments for phasing out "older" tech. I know the automotive and computer analogies people are likely to cite, and I don't care. Bikes are meant to be low-tech, simple, and easy to maintain. We're getting too far away from that concept.

Thing is, people aren’t buying them. I see F12 on the road, how many of them are rims? Same for Factor O2 and the latest TCR. Rim brake aficionados aren’t buying new bikes that are also rim brakes. Not least not in the carbon road race market. Totally different story in the realm of bespoke steel bikes. Over there, rim brakes are totally not dead.
@rangersmith4652
@rangersmith4652 Жыл бұрын
@@ariffau I think the reason most new high-end and mid-range bikes being sold are carbon fiber, hydraulic brake, integrated cabling, electronically controlled shifting bikes is the buyers are emulating the world tour pros, all of whom have been forced in that direction (with the occasional outlier who gets away with because her or she wins races). It actually speaks volumes that so many bespoke buyers are still opting for rim brakes.

Unless you're a competitive cyclist who has sponsors, I can't possibly imagine the justification for spending 5 figures on a bicycle. Even mid four figures seems silly to me. A bike can only get so good, and there's no way a $15K bike is ten times better than a well-made $1.5K bike - two or three times better, sure, but not ten times better.

There is no doubt in my mind that certain manufacturers have been exercising gross price opportunism at the high end since cycling started pulling people in who would otherwise have spent all their free time on a golf course. And while innovation is often good, when it comes without associated engineering improvements that actually improve the product's efficiency and service life, as you point out with the bottom bracket issue (ironically the hobby horse of your arch enemy Hambini). Cheap BSOs aren't exactly a new thing either - so much so that the term BSO has largely been and gone. They've been with us since mass production. But it is about time that safety/quality standards were applied to their manufacturers and enforced.

Integrated bars and stems are the latest disaster. There's no way of altering the reach or width of the bars in the future if you want to without buying a new bar/stem combination and if you damage the bars you might not be able to get hold of the correct one's for that bike. Also when you sell the bike other people can't alter the reach either. More stuff heading for the landfill I'm afraid. Standard bike parts are becoming less standard all the time.

More. Your usual dealer will get a 1.6-1.8x margin on most stuff. e.g. DA for ~4000 they buy for ~2400 or so. But thats without tax ofc. A manufacturer 1. gets their stuff directly from shimano and not from a distributor, and due to massive amounts they get way better orices too. I would guess Cannondale or whoever (PON) pays something like 1-1500 for a DA groupset

One thing to mention: the custom builds will also take who knows how long to assemble. Start to finish, it will probably take at least a month if you do everything yourself; more if you have a shop do it for you. During the busy season, you're looking at ~2 months to get everything sized, ordered, and assembled. Potentially more depending on the stock status of some of those components. Meanwhile, a complete build can be out on the road in the time it takes to ship and assemble (1-2 weeks if it's in-stock). Faster if the shop has one on the floor already. In my experience, the folks willing to dump thousands upon thousands of dollars on a bike that is, frankly, more than they really need are willing to spend more for convenience. A few hundred, or even a thousand, $ is a drop in the bucket to them.

1. It's is insulting that bikes at car price range still require extra purchases. Powermeter, head unit and bike fit and are still weighted without all these necessary accessories for sale, and people still don't get the the absolute best equipment. 2. The build quality especially for bottom brackets the heart of the bike still come awfully misaligned creating excess friction to the point that I once dropped a TT rider on a flat with my Colnago Master steel bike from 1989. That shouldn't be possible, he had a lighter Carbon TT bike and 60mm deep section wheels, while I was riding the 80s Corsa Record components on a >8kg steel frame build. 3. Tyre width and pressure, It wouldn't surprise me if high tyre pressures get banned in the future. The efficiency on good roads is unquestionable. Now the industry trend need wider forks for better airflow to the point that they have the width of an MTB. Of course to compensate for the ridiculous tyre width. I wouldn't race anything below 8bar. 4. The rule's haven't changed, the riders still causes roughly 75% of the drag. I raced: Look 555 Dura Ace 2007 800€ 6,95kg, Cervélo Soloist Carbon SRAM Red 2006 2700€ 7,05kg and a Cervélo S5 Disc SRAM Etap 2019 17.000€ 7,30kg. I ride so much in all kinds of weather, and this just seems to be asking for trouble even if there is a drainage port. I’ve never been bothered by external cables, and I’m not running a bar-bag on a MTB or road bike. Also not a fan of proprietary parts (seatposts). I don't mind bikes coming with cheap wheelsets. If you are commuting etc. you want something that doesn't $$$ if you damage them. Upgrading your wheels to what you want (how you ride, your weight, do you do lots of climbing, do you live in fairly flat Florida:)) will dictate what wheelset you need. When I started gravel riding, my carbon framed GRX600 bike equipped came with literally 2200gram wheelset with 19mm internal width rims (poor choices were made by mfg on that one), but I knew I would be swapping them out. They lasted long enough for me to figure out what wheels I needed and enough time to build them. Now I have 1300 gram wheels that also make sense for the riding that I do.

The margin thus increases as you go up the range.

@Joshua Felten I have no issue with them making money. I will not have a problem with paying RRP when replacing groupsets, it is the fact that we are getting forced to upgrade frames & groupset and don't have a choice to stick to our older rim brake frames. The other thing is that when it comes to value for money, the extra 2k for 12 speed is not worth it. Speed is determined by how much power you output, not by disc brakes, integrated cables, electronic shifting or if it is 12 speed. Shimano always where based on selling good product and solid engineering and not marketing hype. They still have good product, they just need to loose the marketing hype.

Bikes and bike components that cost silly amounts of money. I'm not talking about one off bikes or custom bikes those are their own breed and custom one off anything is always going to be silly expensive but for mass produced general public available bikes there should be some sort of self restraint. When they were first getting to the threshold somebody should have looked at the £5000 price tag on, let's face it a toy, and said no. This is silly, if you're spending more than a couple of grand you should be getting an engine. There should be an unofficial price cap on bikes at around 5k like there used to be for pretty much everything before the mid 2010s. I'm not saying I want everything for free or you shouldn't be allowed to waste your money however you want but the bicycling public at large should have voted with their wallets and made it clear that a bicycle, no matter how well engineered, is not worth car money.

With expensive bikes, if you got the money to buy one, the slight extra to have it prebuilt is not an issue, would you build a ferrari yourself to save £300 ? You missed one benefit of deep section wheels, they will keep you busy in crosswinds. A benefit of cheap bikes is that nobody is going to want to steel them.

Some cheap bikes are crap but there a starting point for some, but if everyone stopped buying the the 2nd hand price would go though the roof

So $200 and $13,000 bikes aren't worth it, buy somewhere in the middle? 😆

Yes. You don't have to kill your bank account, but you can't not set a lower budget limit or set an excessively low one.

Yeah you can build it for less but the companies need to make a profit as they can’t sell it for purchase price

Bikes are expensive because people buy them on credit. It's stupid how much these things go for.

If everyone started buying 2nd hand instead of cheap bike the 2nd hand price would rise dur to the demand anyway pricing more people out 😂

The fact that you upgrade to carbon wheels, makes the bike build v expensive bike even more in favour of build as you would cross over the upgrade wheels not buy a new set,
