This video shows my 5 year old tackling a pre-algebra/orders of operation problem. I use these problems to diagnose areas of weakness in her math skills. She completed multiplication when she was four so I am looking to see if she can recall her multiplication facts quickly. If she is slower with multiplication then I create lessons to go back and review that. She more recently completed division so I am assessing how quickly she can recall her division facts. The time it takes to answer 27/9 informs me that she knows her division facts but math speed drills would be helpful to allow her to recall them faster.
As she moves through the problem I am also assessing how organized she is with the different orders of operation. I am looking to see if she write unnecessary parenthesis or changes a plus to a minus. I am also looking to see if she will be distracted by my three year old son (left of the screen). For a 5 year old who is doing this problem near nap time I think she does a great job with her focus.
I have designed the last part of this problem to have addition of larger numbers. Addition seems easier for adults who can manipulate numbers in their head but for a child of this age it’s actually harder because it requires multiple steps. For this portion I am looking to see what method she uses to arrive at the answer. I am happy to see her use the most reliable method she knows in order to ensure that the answer is correct. Based on what she does I can then slowly incorporate other strategies to help her arrive at the same answer in the future. Thank you for watching.
