At the other end of the scale, my 1979 steel classic had a stuck seatpost. It has one English threaded bottom bracket threaded cup, and one Italian threaded Phil cup! Yes, this is possible! Threads both questionable because of rust. During restoration I chose to have the seatpost powder coated along with the Dave Moulton frame. Sometimes discresion really is the better part of valor! Only a few hundred of these were built during his career. The balance under the Masi, Hall, and Fuso name. A few subtle changes also got me 9 speed non indexed shifting with the 1973 Nuvou derailier. No cold setting or forcing the wheel in! No more tubulars, but authentic styled wheels. Still ready as it stands for that fine weather day!

There's a bike mechanic in Stirling who's got one of those. We tried it on my old steel Kona and it actually began to distort that flat plate around the top of the post. He lent me a saw blade tool and I sawed the post out from inside, took an hour of work but it did the trick. An electric recipricating saw would be faster but you'd need to take care nit to cut into the seat tube.

I had the same thing happen. Al post in a Ti frame. The shop just used ‘the brute force and ignorance’ method. I lost a good saddle that day.

That's not electrolytic corrosion as its just aluminium on aluminium. It's just oxidisation over time, is that correct Dave? The cure is to lightly grease the seat post into the frame tube, hope that's correct as its what I've done. I'm still going to check it tomorrow. I did 17 miles today and it is the wettest I've ever been, the wind was scary as well, glad I stayed off road.

Hi john, it’s galvanic corrosion, steel frame, just lightly grease as you said but take it out often to clean and re grease.

Hi Dave, an other great video, quick question where do you get the black collars from ? Planning on making my own
@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic2 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for watching. The are steel split shaft collars, they need to machined out to the seatpost sizes, 31.6. 30.9 et etc, eBay

I have never been defeated by a stuck seat post. HEAT IS YOUR ENEMY! You think that the metal expands and you're correct. Most modern-day day posts are made from aluminum. ALUMINUM EXPANDS SIGNIFICANTLY MORE than steel. It also does this at a much lower temperature. Lubrication also does very little because the entire reason your post is stuck is due to ALUMINUM OXIDATION. Nothing washes that out. The post itself has grown.
