5 Years in...Yearly status update on Phyn Plus and Flo by Moen

Sharing what happened to my second Phyn Plus 2nd Gen device this last year and why I have a Phyn Plus plumbing blank on the house...again.
The journey started with a pin hole leak in the copper plumbing under our slab foundation. We installed Flo Technology's Flo device in April of 2019. The switch was made from Flo to Phyn in November of 2021 and I have been testing Flo and Phyn devices ever since.

I had my Moen Flo installed 18 months ago and it's been great. I am surprised that it did not give you warning, or shut off your water when using your summer shower. I get a warning after a yearly draining of my reverse osmosis tank upon refilling.

Thanks for starting the conversation! I have a couple guesses there, but I'm not 100% on your RO situation because I don't have one. If you don't mind answering: How long does it take to refill the RO tank? How much water is used for that event? Is it a different rate of flow than any other usage in the house? As for mine, Flo had two summers to detect the shower and it did not. There is another shower that we use year round. The two magnets on Flo's turbine can't tell the difference between either shower. An ultrasonic flow sensor taking 240 measurements a second has a better chance at detecting different sources. A good algorithm should be able to tell the differences when there is at least a questionable difference in usage. However, when there are similar situations each company's choice of technology is a major difference between detecting a leak or not. It is nice to know your Flo has you protected there! Hopefully the RO system doesn't get damaged if it gets cut off?

Thank you for the kind words. Fire away if you have questions. My #5 Flo is operating in a climate controlled basement in the cold winter climate of Nebraska. I wish I could say the same for Phyn Plus, but the company did not extend that offer back when I asked to restart the clock there while debugging the issue here...or subsequent times. Your situation is ideal where your plumbing comes in indoors, which is much more forgiving on these devices.

Flo dropped their integration with IFTTT about 4 years ago. Phyn never integrated. Both don't really have an incentive to do so since they have their own water sensors to sell and those send texts, email and push notifications (Flo also can give you a call as well). Alexa and Google skills don't really do much that you can't check through the app so that route isn't an option either (it sounds like Flo is also not supporting those integrations as well anymore either although their website still claims it does so YMMV).
