This series is great for understanding the fundamental differences at set price points. I have enjoyed every one, because I am gaining an understanding of the differences in boats. I would appreciate a continuation of this series. Thank you for taking the time and effort.

You make every boat sound desirable. Good job for that. I think most of us idealize certain features and characteristics over the reality of what we actually use and need. Hunter is popular for this reason. Reasonably cheap, tone of space for lounging, yet still a capable cruiser. By the end of the year I will be cruising the Caribbean for a few years. Being at anchor is how 90% of my time will be spend. And that’s were the boat needs to shine. Passage making will rarely be more than 3 days. Pick a good weather window and it’ll be fine.

J-Boats engineer question? Love your show chap. In the early 80's I was an engineer for J-Boats. We purchased the Morgan 454 design and mold. If you look at a J-Boats 46' to Morgan 454, you cannot tell the difference. Keep up the good work chap.

You said "Beneteau"!!! Gather the militia!!! Man the barricades!!! 🙂 Dude, your guidance here is amazing. At this price point choices must be made and you do an amazing job of calling that out. That said....I'm waiting until you get to talking about multi-hulls as an option at a future price point....

I just had my bid on a boat accepted, but I also looked at that $25k Newport 41 that Tim highlighted a couple of weeks ago. The only reason I didn't buy the Newport is I just didn't want to do all the fixing up, I'm not interested in racing. A couple of younger people buying that boat are going to get a terrific boat, spend more money on sandpaper and varnish than on beer - and never regret it. Here's a question, using Beneteaus as the test case. I've looked at listings for Beneteau 39/40s from 1989 ($50k), 2000($75k), 2017 ($142k) and new ($220k). To me these prices suggest that that the older boats must be like old clunker cars, always breaking down, always in the shop, almost ready for the junk yard. However, Looking at actual older boats... What I see are boats that need some work - most notably cosmetic, but could be engines, rigging, etc... updating the electronics, etc.... But I'd guess that the 1988 Beneteau for $50k with $10k in upgrades would be be about the same boat as a much newer one. Maybe not as shiny and with smaller glass in the ports, but not much that couldn't be brought up to date. (I learned about boat stink - it's just water in the bilges, maybe old cushions and mattresses. Clean it all out really good, install a couple of DryBilge pumps and stinky is gone.) (I think my idea is basically sound, but I don't know enough to be able to really make this argument to people who do know.) I had thought looking at older boats I'd find rotting unsound hulls, rudders about to fall off, smoking, grunting diesels -- instead I just find older boats that are in pretty good shape, need a few things with no end of life in sight. I've yet to hear a diesel engine that didn't sound like every other diesel engine I've ever heard. (Of course limited experience). A video I'd like to see is What it would take and cost to bring one of these older boats from these various years up to a similar standard, and what pluses the newer and new boats would have over 'the standard.' A big part of this I think maybe when boats moved away from balsa cores. Any crack that allows water to reach wood leads to rot, swelling and delamination. No balsa core and it might last forever.

I'd like a Catalina 36 or 42 MK2 without the Catalina $$$ and a slightly shallower draft. The interior layout and swim platform are strong selling points for me. The 6 foot draft, I can live with. This is a great series btw... 👍👍😎

i agree with you! I am new to sailing and I want boats that won't scare the wife, will allow me to invite guests and get my brother addicted, which means it needs to be able to be single-handed so two older dudes can learn. I think that means I need to spend a little more money.

We’ve watched a lot of your videos… and I just KNEW you’d mention Gulfstar in this one. I agree that there were some earlier boats from GS that were of shotty quality. We have an 81 44cc and it’s an amazing vessel. And there have been plenty under 50k (ours for instance) but maybe we just make that our little secret 😉

Good Job Lady K. FYI all the 40K boats are now 50K boats since this video was released. I think 2 hours ago. I was looking at Catalina 320 for 40K in the beginning of the season now these are 55k to above 60K. this may be just this particular model. I'm limited by draft, not boat length. my "hard" budget is 50k

In the 1970s Hunter 25s had a reputation of the keels falling off, much to the detriment of windward performance. Seems I remember an Irwin 37 center cockpit back in the day. The Morgan OI 41s were built for the Caribbean charter trade and there were a lot of them. The looks were created by the comon practice of taking an older hull design, with lowish headroom and making a new deck that raised the headroom but gave it the odd look of the rubrail on the hull where the deck/hull joint that was a look you had to get used to, or not. It is apparently very hard to make a roomy boat under fourty feet that does not look like a "clorox bottle".

Geography likely plays a role in what you can buy and for how much. Prices in southern CA for the boats you are finding (if they even could be found here) would likely be significantly higher. Perhaps you want to reveal the location of the boats you’re finding to put the prices in perspective.

If I am going older, I am going Elan or Grand Soleil. You know the builds are well done and even 40 years on, the workmanship still shows through over Hunter or other boats in these periods. These would be wonderful boats but would run a bit deep. If you want something less deep, a Southerly 115 would be perfect but you will probably have to sail it back from the EU yourself.

@robertmorrison107
@robertmorrison107 2 жыл бұрын
@@pierremitham2964 That is very true, 10 to 1 you are getting on a plane to bring it back which is a scary contention. A grand soleil 50 of any year, a 90's Elan 431 are still boats I would be happy to retire on in the Caribbean. The Southerlys again just didn't have bad years of production quality so pick what you can afford. But we were talking about 50k and those boats can be had in europe still in great shape for 50k. I'd almost certainly spend a month sailing around england in an extended test of her rigging, sails and systems before making the crossing.

Many boats are build for a certian environment. It can get windy in some parts of the Caribbean so less sail area was not a problem. Yep Sunfish are fast but hard to cook and sleep on, and you partner/crew need to be on the small n' light side.

I have a question, I have seen many people "Sailing the world" on youtube, however, Nobody discusses the license requirements to travel. I can get a "Harbor" or a "Coastal" license wnere I live, But... What kind of license is required to travel across an ocean and where do you get it ???? I have read about a "European" and an "American" license, so which one works around the world ??? Thanks to anyone who has this info. 😉
