Got caught in a sudden storm arriving 180deg from the forecast wind on our 50ft-er in Greece. Had to pull anchor, but could not point into the wind on motor power. The wind kept pushing us off wind. Ended up backing into the wind, and holding the boat at 1,500 rpm reversing until the storm passed (1h). Food for thought.

Charter management. You can do similar thing with any boat. Find a reputable charter management company, they'll take you through the buying process, finding a crew, finding a berth, chartering, maintenance. Everything. Works good on bigger more luxurious cats and sailboats that will then be chartered exclusively with crew that will take care of the boat at sea. Bareboat rentals are a recepy for disaster.

having lived in this area for 20 years or so you have to get used to the different types of storms that impact the area ie pop up thunderstorms mostly in the May to September times somewhat safe less chance of severe mind gusts however many have very strong down drafts. the very strong storm fronts that move through usually October to April not only do you have the down drafts but the speed the storm front is traveling over ground much more dangerous. i find myself checking multiple sites and even isolated weather stations in the path of a front just to get a idea of what's going on. please don't just rely on just the local radar image as weather can change way before the green on the radar gets to you. if there is any question in your mind please stay in port and sail another day we probably have 300 days a year that are wonderful out on the water

Nope . I would have never left port thanks . Storm forecast , shallow water , thunderstorms, I am out ! We were up the B. C. Coast a few years ago and were hold up in a small inlet for 7 long boring days on the outside of Haida Gwaii. Best decision my wife and I ever made . Massive winds and huge waves on an uncharted coast . We poked our nose out in our tender one day took one look and ran back to our anchored boat with our tail between our legs. We both agreed we would stay as long as it took for the weather to break . At the head of the inlet we wrestled clocking 80 knot gusts . It was nuts .

I'm currently fixing some topside and a massive hole in the side of a 1990 hunter 35.5 and iv been absolutely alarmed about the way the fiberglass layers and the foam insulation have been constructed. So the hole that's in the side of the haul is halfway between the water line and the free board. I the water line runs right through the middle of the repair. The best way for me to explain what I'm seeing is to call it 3 separate layers outer, foam, and inner. The outer layer is SO thin it's crazy like 3/16" if that and the perforated foam is like 1/8" I'm not sure how thick the inner haul is but the separation of the foam and outer layer freaks me out. The top side behind the mast is also notably thin. So thin it's hard to create a nice layered seam between the new glass work and the factory stuff. Any advice, guidance or suggestions might make me feel better about what I'm seeing. Thanks and have a wonderful day

I owned a Luders 33 -- 1968 Hull #47. Lived on it for 7 years in Canada. Not fast but comfortable and easy to sail. Comparable boats are C&C 30 and Corvette, Alberg 30 and 37. There are lots around at good prices but make sure the engine is recent

It’s not man made C l i m a t e change, rather the earths collapsing natural magnetic field, letting in more of the Suns charged particles. Over multiple decades this field is (and will further) decrease in strength. This increases the intensity of what’s called the global electric circuit. Incidentally, as the current goes in one direction from the stratosphere to ground (and/or sea) you get “high” pressure, the other direction a “low” pressure. Hence why the intensity of weather extremes will increase.

The wind is free....Sailing; the illusion of a free ride... Q: When is the best time to reef your sails ? A: The first time you think of it. Three sheets to the wind... Being raised on San Francisco Bay, I'll never go back to the gray-green water there that is full of agricultural nitrates and pesticides from California's Central Valley.. The clean, clear, beautiful waters of Puget Sound and the Inland Passage are where I want to sail these days. Mobile Bay looks too thick to drink and too thin to plow. Can we please go back in time a couple centuries; before the white man's farming and industry made it the color it is now ? Climate change is real. Mother Nature bats last. Stay safe out there.

My family grew up sailing our Hobie cat all around the bay, would cross the bay frequently. Almost always riding on one pontoon and it would make a pronounced humming sound bcz of the speed. We turtled quite a few times but thankfully always lucked out in flagging down a motorboat to help flip us back upright. Bobbing around out in the channel was a little harrowing knowing people shark fished out there, and also worried about big ship traffic. Great memories though, my Pops was a heck of an adventurer. We were from midwest and had no prior sailing or water experience. But quickly became pretty well adept at mastering the Hobie, and sailing out in the gulf too. We rescued some very drunk newlyweds who had drifted offshore on their gulf shores honeymoon, hanging onto a little childs float, they would have almost certainly drowned. Still remeber hearing their faint shouts for help and how crazy sunburned they were, and slurred speech they were so hammered! We sailed before and after Gaillard island was created from the ship channel dredging.

Thanks! I hadn't heard of this race or this incident. Terminology: An 8-foot wave driven by high wind in a protected bay is a "sea" wave, not a "swell". Swells are large waves raised by winds that blew somewhere else & these can cross oceans. -Angelika's Husband, USCG, 1973-77

my undestanding was the crew was on deck putting away all the deck chairs and various amenities, which is why when the yacht got knocked down they were thrown into the water and survived, whereas the owner and guests were mostly killed. For me personally, I'd rather lose some furniture than the whole boat so when in doubt, batten down the hatches, then AFTER the blow, go in search of what blew overboard.

My wife and I were anchored 20 miles to the east that morning. When we woke up, I could sense that the weather was dangerous……a feeling in the air. We had a three hour sail back to our slip in Pensacola ahead of us and were underway early. The storm rolled in and hit the racers about the time our last line was fast.
