I'd love to be able to store my spices in my kitchen. However, my cupboards are so hot that they dry out in a week and lose their lose effectiveness. Instead, I store all my spices in the door of the refrigerator freezer. They last forever and I only have to use half of what the recipe calls for since spices increase in potency when refrigerated. I hope this information is useful for you.

Excellent! My house gets boiling hot in summer to November. I've been worried about my cupboard items. So, it's okay to refrigerate dry herbs & spices? Thanks so much ❤
@MHow-qc3ns2 жыл бұрын
@@user-bv1ss5nj9b: I'm glad you found this info helpful. Remember to put them in the "freezer", not the fridge or you will get condensation in the spice container. As a funny note, I still have a 1/4 container of McCormick's Garlic Power (3.12 oz.) that I bought at least 20 years ago when I moved into this apartment. The price of $2.99 is still on the bottom of the container. It's probably the most cost-effective product I've ever bought.

Awwww! Find a teen or young adult that can trade with you. You talk/walk them through how to do something while they use your beloved tools. They learn life skills, your house becomes more organized. It’s a priceless trade off in my humble opinion. Think about what this would do for a student who is smart but not school/testing-savvy.

SPICE RACK idea. A few years back, Keurig coffee makers were really the "it" gift. We no longer use one but I still have the under machine single use pod drawer my son gifted to me. I have placed the drawer under my current drip coffee maker. It doesn't take up any extra counter space and my most used spices are handy inside the drawer.
@patriciatinkey26772 жыл бұрын
Smart! I still have a very small, cheap Keurig knockoff, it is a terrific quick, not much electricity, machine for hot water. I put the teabag, hot chocolate mix, loose tea infuser, etc in the cup, bingo, that baby delivers the hot water & only takes up about a 6 inch square on the counter. Saved buying a hot water pot!

The only thing I think people need to remember is, even when hanging something on your cabinet or pantry door, you still need to make sure the space it takes up inside the cabinet is available. This can be an issue if there are shelves. You can hang a shoe organizer on the door, close the door and the shelves squish your twinkies or break your pretzels when it hits the shelf. I really like the spice idea. But you'll need to make sure these are positioned between shelves and that items on the shelves are pushed back to allow space for the items when door is closed.

True. None of the kitchen door ideas will work for my cabinets either, because of the shelves. I wasted a bunch of money on a metal over door rack for my broom closet. It fit the door but when you tried to close the door the baskets hit the frame. I forgot to allow room for that. I had to put the rack on the door to my laundry room instead. I bought a soft hanging rack designed for baby stuff for the broom closet and it works fine. Nothing too heavy though, just lighter things. Live and learn. 🤷🥴

I just got plastic bins at Dollar General to organize my pantry and they were BOGO....what a DEAL and they are tough plastic too and will last forever....the only organizers I have ever bought that were pricy were clear bottles for my seed bead stash. The bottles come 12 to a clear plastic box and I have about 20 boxes. That's a lot of beads but that storage was really important for me to have because size, color, finish, where I bought them, etc. is important to know so I don't use the wrong bead in a project (I am a polymer clay artist and use beads with it). They hold a lot of beads in a small yet highly organized space. I also got little modular clear plastic holders for our kitchen desk drawer to store the optimal amount of stuff in a small space. All other stuff was cheap like plastic rolling sets of drawers, flatware organizers, etc. I just try to hold down the stuff I do have so I don't have to resort to storage hacks much. I'd rather purge my ribbon stash than figure out ways to hold it all, for example. I must admit the cabinet under my kitchen sink is a mess but I can't bend over so cleaning it out necessitates help from someone else.... hubby is a great cook but NOT an organizer at ALL -- his office is a meeesssss!

I tried the shower curtain rings on a clothes hanger for my scarves, and it was a nightmare, because they slide around and roll into each other and they would all wind up on one side. Store your pencils etc: glue a cluster of inner tubes of toilet paper (the cluster glued together makes the tubes sturdier) onto cardboard and store different coloured pencils in each one. For storing wet paintbrushes, spray varnish or use water-resistant paint, e.g. gloss paint. Roll knitting yarn around a kitchen roll inner tube. When you need it, put the tube into a kitchen roll holder, the "cake" (even with 100g yarn) will unwind easily. For storage, can also make a small slit at the edge of the cardboard: slit the end of the yarn to prevent it unwinding and to find it easily. If for some reason the kitchen roll holder doesn't stay in place, you can clamp it to the table with a simple clamp from DIY or craft store. Not a storage tip but... To keep your toothbrushes fresh and bacteria-free: put them into a dishwasher! Or if you don't have one, use laundry/thin bleach to soak your toothbrush 15 minutes, wash and rinse well. Burnt food in a pan: put some laundry detergent add warm water and let the enzymes do the work while it is soaking. Then wash normally and rinse well.

Quite a few ideas were repeated, such as shoe storage and egg cups. Note also that whatever you hang inside the cupboard door will take space away from the cupboard shelves. Also, make sure that you can still close the cupboard door: usually that means your rack can only be the height of your shelf space (or you could make the shelves shallower, but that would mean less storage space on them). If you have a small home store X in your storage room... WHAT!? IF you have a storage room you home ISN'T SMALL!

I liked several of the ideas/suggestions. I agree with other about not hanging heavy lids on your cabinet doors as it puts too much weight on the hinges and if your doors aren't solid wood I'm sure the weigh would do serious damage if not pull the door off. Inserting toothbrushes into u-shapes removed from wood shelving inside a medicine cabinet means the brushes dry in that open wood, and boy, the germs and toothpaste gunk soaking into the open wood is extremely unhygienic because there is no way to disinfect it. Also I doubt if the cabinet has enough fresh air movement inside it to actually allow the brushes to dry. Whatever you use to hold your brushes after they are rinsed and ready to air dry, should be an implement you can disinfect at least weekly, for example, a simple toothbrush holder or a mug that can go in the dishwasher weekly. If you place that in an open bin that's great and gets it off the counter. We usually just keep our brushes on a clean counter area beside our sinks under where our hand towel and washcloth hang. And please, no communal water cups. Give each person their own small plastic cup written with a Sharpie with their name on it, or use stickers for identification. Change them weekly or even more often. Place items you use often in a basket or container on the counter. This corrals it all and the basket can be removed in one movement for cleaning under it. It contains all your daily items and can be easily cleaned out weekly to get rid of loose hair or unused products. If you have a large family using a small bathroom, give each person a basket (plastic beach toy pails work great for kids), which each keeps in their bedroom. They take it to the bath and take it back to the bedroom when done. This is what college students living in dorms do and it's easy and practical for the home too. The kids keep their bath toys in those pails too, so this restricts the toys to just a few, which is good too. This keeps the bathroom clear of everyone's toothbrushes, toothpaste hair brushes and doodads, lotions, shampoos and conditioners. There is NO need for products to invade the bathroom. Products setting on bathroom surfaces harbor wetness, mildew and mold under them, and when doing the weekly disinfecting, having to remove, wipe down and replace these products after the counter or tub surround are disinfected probably make it three times as long to clean a bathroom. All you need are a soap pump at the sink, generic bathroom soap bar at the tub, and nothing on the toilet tank top. Thus these surfaces stay cleaner and can be disinfected weekly lickety-split, and it makes the bathroom a tidy, germ-free and serene place. And if you make a mess at the sink, you clean it up. A bottle of disinfectant spray and pile of clean terry bar cloths or cut up tee shirt rags can be kept hidden in a bathroom cabinet for quick clean-ups. Toss the cloth right into the laundry basket. That way nobody has to clean up your mess. Get organized and make these bathroom rules part of your family's routine and your bathroom will be hygienic, serene and uncluttered. Nothing drives me nuts more than seeing product clutter, half of which we don't even really NEED. Also, loofahs and those fabric puffs kept for months without washing are very unhygienic and all sorts of nasty germs grow on them. Blechhh! Better to use washcloths which can be laundered as often as you like. This keeps you from infecting wounds or giving yourself nasty skin disorders.....just sayin'....

In total agreement. The minimalist approach in the bathroom is the best way to go to prevent germ spreading all over from bathroom clutter.
