This is unbelievably accurate for a flintlock pistol! It might be a good idea not to load it with a powder flask though, one smouldering ember and you will loose your hand!

Englishman French Because of the patent breech on this pistol, I swab out the barrel and breech after every shot to avoid ignition problems. Even so, it is the safest general practice not to charge from the flask. Thank you for watching!

As Englishman French said, that is indeed an accurate pistol. Is that because of its modern construction and powder, or is the accuracy typical of the flintlock pistols used way back in the day?

newuser285 the reason for the strategies during the era of the flintlock pistol/rifle was because of the inaccuracy. the reason for line infantry and such was because of the inaccuracy of the flintlock. though I also think reload time and such also played a part. so this accuracy is probably due to modern technology or edited selected shots that were hits.

Even back then, some flintlock pistols were rifled. Makes wonders for accuracy. Smooth bore ones are called "punches" over here : you had to be within punching distance to hit anything (that's an exageration, but not by much : you could miss a man sized target at 6 to 8m). :) Modern manufacturing sure helps, too.

There were not many people with the economic and political level to really invest in better firearms besides the nobility wich were too conservative to think of something more practical for the army, this is one of the reasons at ww1people thaught cavalry charges were still useful.

You think it's that easy to come up with the idea that the bullet could come already equipped with the powder in the form of a cartridge? And it was the early 19th century, after industrialization already kicked in, at least in the UK-I assume that even if someone had thought of that before, no mass production of such cartridges would have been possible with only man power at your disposal.

Why do people comment if they have no idea what they are talking about,it took so long to make the process quicker cause mercury fulminate wasnt invented till the early 19th century,people thought about and did carry premade bullets called sabots,if the fulmniate was discovered earlier so would have been a precussion cap then a rimfire munition and bolt action weapons etc.

Yep. Some people countered this by carrying more guns. In the early days of cap and ball revolvers especially texas rangers would often have as many as six on their person at all times
@orfeo793
@orfeo793 3 жыл бұрын
in the 1840s Patterson revolvers apparently would come with a spare cylinder that you could preload and cap for quicker reloading, and was used by Texas Rangers, since the Patterson had to be basically disassembled to reload. I'm curious though if that was just a matter of cost and convenience as opposed to carrying an extra gun or two, or if it was actually quicker than simply switching to your other revolver.

@@SamCulperJr every modern gun has rifling. If we do find a firearm by the technique used to improve accuracy of the projectile than every gun on earth would be a rifle and that’s simply not the case. This man is an extremely accurate shooter. You would be hard-pressed to hit the target at 50 yards with any modern handgun as consistent as the man in this video.

Hey so can someone please tell me why you need pillow ticking when loading a Flintlock musket cause during the American civil war they just needed to pour powder and ram the mini ball down and put a percussion cap on why is this gun different?
@SamCulperJr
@SamCulperJr 5 жыл бұрын
That’s not a musket. It’s a rifles pistol. Musket means smoothbore. BUT in the case of muskets ticking (wadding) was necessary to make a good snug fit while it shoots out the barrel to keep it from bouncing around whilst inside. In the case of Flintlock Rifles. Wadding was Necessary to help grip the rifling and guide the ball out of the barrel. In regards to the civil war.... the Minie Ball was hollowed out at the bottom (the skirt). And when the powder was ignited the pressure filled the skirt causing it to open up and be forcibly pushed against the rifling so no wadding was needed to grip the rifling and spin the projectile.

I'm actually working on a story set in the 18th century and while I am aware that flintlock handguns were rarely used (maybe outside the sea at least) and were more or less a fashion statement, I wonder what kind of damage they could deal. I mean, let's say one of my characters shoots another straight in the back of his head: would the other guy go down with a round bleeding hole in his forehead the way modern hanguns work, at least in movies, or would it be messier (guess it shouldn't, this way or another it's just a single projectile but maybe these balls were somewhat less durable?)?
5 жыл бұрын
If you shoot someone in the head with one of these, they won't have much of a head left! A soft lead projectile would leave a bore sized entry hole, and a much bigger exit hole. It would definitely be a one shot stop! Even a modern pistol would make a huge mess of someone's head, despite what Hollyweird would make you think.

Why is he/she putting some fabric in the barrel along with the ball?
@HeWhoHasRisen3500
@HeWhoHasRisen3500 7 жыл бұрын
The "fabric", or "patch", as it's called, encases the bullet and makes a hell of a snug fit. This is needed to build up the pressure inside the barrel...think of it like "resistance" holding the bullet in until the right amount of pressure from the gases forcefully blow the bullet out. The patch seals the barrel and prevents gasses from escaping around the sides of the bullet, and that snugness helps twist the bullet against the rifling inside the barrel. I have this exact model of flintlock, and it is amazingly fun to shoot! Now, ask yourself why he's using 3F powder to charge the pistol, and why it's a death sentence if you use 4F powder to charge but not to prime, why 2F powder still works, and why 1F powder is a no no....

Per the ATF, black powder weapons are not considered 'firearms' for the purposes of regulation. So, at the fed level, no license needed. This also means barrel length rules for long guns and caliber rules with regards to what is and is not a 'dangerous device' are also out the window. That said, laws state to state can vary.

In most states you don't even need to do any paper work to get it. They are not considered a firearm since they can not fire a a modern cartridge. just hand them the money and go play with your new toy!

You need to know what you're doing. Wrong type of powder and it's a hand grenade (Never 4F to charge, only prime the pan, 3F is best but 2F can be used. 4F is smallest grain for the ignition pan, inside the barrel it would explode from the over pressure.) Wrong amount of powder and it's the same. (This pistol can accept 20 - 45 grains of black powder, black powder substitute might have a different measurement, smokeless powder will turn the pistol into your funeral because of the pressures. One should always use the real deal for these babies in my opinion.) Not shoving the bullet all the way down and kiss your hand goodbye (gaps create overpressure and the ball won't come out but the barrel will explode). Don't clean it correctly and it's a ruined pile of rust the next day (sulfur is corrosive)

@@dawson9652 Before you do that, check your LOCAL laws! In New Jersey, if it can fire a projectile, ANY projectile, by use of a propulsive force, ANY propulsive force, it is a FIREARM! NERF guns are included in that, btw. Most retailers won't even ship gun KITS to NJ!

@@mikegrossberg8624 I know, there are a few states that are different, and laws can change at any time, but most American states still dont consider them to be a technical firearm. It's always important to check your laws though. For me I just get anything black powder related through the mail because of my states laws.

Flintlocks and muskets?? What are you talking about? They’re not two different things. That’s like saying Pistols and triggers. Wtf? And they were actually much more accurate than you’d think. And flintlock rifle could hit 300+yds. And flintlock MUSKET could hit 100*yds And a FLINTLOCK PISTOL could hit 30+yds

If you wear enough cloth layers, the ball won’t penetrate. BUT it will break bone, hurt like a m-f’er, and knock you on your ass. It’s like being hit with a sledge hammer. It might not go through you, but the fight was over. And if you didn’t wear enough layers, it will tear up your flesh too.
