Eh I kinda disagree. An artists first project is appreciated because it isn't trying too hard to appease a mass market but rather see what crowd is gonna latch on and understand the artists vision. It happens alot that preceding LPs end up sounding too different or mainstream influenced and that only makes sense. Many fans now don't force thier favourite artists to hit big time now because we know the quality of music we love and appreciate will change and be affected. We don't believe in big labels and mainstream exposure anymore...

Jay-Z and Nas, who he mentioned as examples in this clip, have even said that their follow-up projects just weren't as good due to many of the factors you listed. "Mainstream" doesn't work like it used to because distribution isn't controlled by labels, so they can't dictate what's "hot" or not. Thanks for commenting! Sub if you haven't. I think that the photographers and media played a HUGE roll in it too but w Britney the major player to get the ball spinning was her family.
