Ironically with Britney Spears, the album recorded and released during her “meltdown” Blackout is generally regarded as her best, and highly influential. Perhaps music is her muse through rough times. But technically, Spear’s first album was absolutely MASSIVE in terms of sales and breaking records. I think it still holds records to this day.
@BrianJRoberts3 жыл бұрын
Great comment Celia. Meltdown gets overshadowed by her debut, Baby One More Time. I thought that Circus album was insane too. I’d had Unusual You on repeat for HOURS. I’d speculate music was her outlet too.

Eh I kinda disagree. An artists first project is appreciated because it isn't trying too hard to appease a mass market but rather see what crowd is gonna latch on and understand the artists vision. It happens alot that preceding LPs end up sounding too different or mainstream influenced and that only makes sense. Many fans now don't force thier favourite artists to hit big time now because we know the quality of music we love and appreciate will change and be affected. We don't believe in big labels and mainstream exposure anymore...
@BrianJRoberts3 жыл бұрын
Great point, appreciate your thoughtful comment. Jay-Z and Nas, who he mentioned as examples in this clip, have even said that their follow-up projects just weren't as good due to many of the factors you listed. "Mainstream" doesn't work like it used to because distribution isn't controlled by labels, so they can't dictate what's "hot" or not. Thanks for commenting! Sub if you haven't. Have some interviews coming up you'll appreciate.
@whatwhat90043 жыл бұрын
@@BrianJRoberts What 50 said doesn’t necessarily always apply though. Because you have artists like Drake for example; nobody would say that Thank Me Later was his best work even though it was his first album. The same with someone like Kendrick Lamar, Eminem and even Tupac. Very rarely are their first albums considered their best work among those who listen to their music.
@BrianJRoberts3 жыл бұрын
@@whatwhat9004 True. Some start with a bang, others need to sonically mature, some zig zag all over the place. Ye is a great example. Like all things, a lot of nuance, no one size fits all model, and no sure path to “success.”

You think 50 wasn't trying to reach a mass market with GRODT? He certainly was! "I got a mil out the deal" "I want them to love me like they love Pac" Being an artist is all about reaching a mass audience. Doing that without appearing desperate in any way is the fine line.

Of course other artists were at the very least happy to see her 'fall from grace.' Unfortunately. I think that the photographers and media played a HUGE roll in it too but w Britney the major player to get the ball spinning was her family. They were the ones telling the media that shes crazy and such just so they could get their greedyass grubby organized crime ring hands on everything she worked so damn hard for. And they achieved that. Uve never seen anyone w that much attention on that type of level. Every. Single. Day. Woman has 2 kids less than a year apart from each. That's postpartum depression x2!!! Plus the hormones x2!! Plus all the bs w the paparazzi and other media outlets. Also Kfed and hell even JT was still bringing her up at that point so he could make money off her. That break up slowly got things going but it really took off after she had her boys with everything else mixed in between. And the other certain female artists I'm sure were just watching it happen. Part of the game unfortunately. Britney is a different case all together then what yall are talking about. Hers was a shitstorm.
