Dear snare drummers. You don't need to hold taiko bachi like a real drumstick. It's quite different because if you do use your pinky on the back of the bachi, it stops the roll movement (how taiko no tatsujin !NOT DRUMMING! rolls work is where you pinch your index finger and thumb around the stick, nothing else on the stick. Your finger and thumb becomes a pivot for the stick to move up and down via drum bounce. This is not double stroking, you are using 1 stick to hit the drum over 5 times in a single hit.) The tatacons cannot roll because their material stops the sticks from bouncing. Taiko bachi is also 2x thicker than Western drumsticks. Also the drum is so solid and rubbery compared to a snare, a pinky behind your stick would really hurt. You CAN play taiko like a real drum, but taiko no tatsujin's rolling ends up way more efficient than proper drumming techniques because it takes less effort. You literally only swing once for 10-14 hits. That's all!
@tokaku4 жыл бұрын
also as for 'hey if you only don't need to hold it properly for rolls, why don't you hold it properly for everything else?' because I find that the way I hold it makes it easier to quickly transition into rolls than redoing my grip completely. Some songs need you to roll (aka don or ka so fast you have to roll them) throughout a song, so yeah

Well I actually know a couple of drummers who play like that, and as an orchestral drummer as well as a jazz/metal set player (playing marimba on the side) who ALSO happens to try Taiko a few times, that it's fine. Every stick takes its own technique, and my god are those sticks thicc. (Thanks I'll take my poetry award now.) Personally I grip it more like a normal drum stick but then again it is just because I am used to the motion.

Has a extreme metal drummer, one of the most important things is the angle of the surface. What it shocks me is that the angle doesnt let the stick to rebound at ALL. To make it rebound/roll more the surface has to be either flat or façing on towards the screen in that case.

Let me apologize on my behalf for all the drummers out there that think they need to educate everyone on how you play drums (in a western style). Like bro, it's not constructive criticism, it's just them trying to show off by saying, "yeah I've been playing drums for a while". People have to understand, there is more than percussion instrument, and they all have different techniques. You can't use the same technique for a marching snare, to a drum set, to a timpani. And that's what makes us percussionist special, we have to master every single technique for every different instrument we play. Take a good look at the cavaliers 2008 show samurai. It's a perfect example of percussionist learning how to play traditional Japanese drums, and guess what... They play them correctly, how they are supposed to be played.
@guidomista84484 жыл бұрын
And before you say, the rolling part might get more points if you roll like you would on a snare drum instead of the buzz roll, you are probably right, but that's not how they do it traditionally. It's the same as saying you should double stroke roll when playing timpani's, and we all know rolling on a timpani is just really quick single stroke rolls.

I have been using the cheapo one for a while and I only just recently moved up to the Hori one. I will say that the cheapo one is fine for what it is but there is one thing about it that I loath. There is a ring of plastic between the dons and kas. If you hit that plastic (which is very easy to do) it will not register a hit. I have failed many FCs due to this design flaw. Furthermore, the dons are not nice to hit. It can get the job done but I do recommend to save up money if you are in a country such as mine where the Hori drum is around 100 dollars to import. I feel that the investment will be worth it if you really love Taiko and play it often.

you can actually take the legs back off of the official nintendo one. have done so a few times when packing it in my bag to save space, it’s very sturdy so it takes a little bit of pressure but it does come off without any damage or much trouble. Also there’s a reddit thread that helped me with the settings calibrate my drum timing on the the switch and i haven’t had any issues with it since so i’d have a look around for that if still having issues!

Question about the knockoff : Have you ever had the knockoff controller shut off on you and/or softlock your other controllers when using it on the Switch? I bought the PS4 version of this knockoff drum and found that it would continuously stop working entirely after ~5 minutes of use, also causing my PS4 controller connected to it to completely lock up and require me to manually reset the PS4 controller each time. I did eventually get the Hori version of the drum controller and have had no issues with it since then (granted it would slightly move around but i can fix that), but i've never had a controller lock up on me like that before.
@gametechchris4 жыл бұрын
PS4 controllers need to authenticate with the console, poorly made unlicensed controllers will be locked out after 8 minutes and need to be replugged to work again. Some good unlicensed controllers (anything by Brook, Dao/Gamo2, etc) spoof a license key and update their firmware when PS4 updates patch them out.

There are actually slots for weights on the Hori tatacon iirc. You can keep it from moving by placing two standard 500mL PET bottles filled with water at what looks like dedicated slots for it.

Thanks a lot for this! For the brandless drum, to keep it steady you need to replace the feet. I just used a gummy tape (and tbh haven't moved it since). I have a question though. One of my brandless ones, the rubber wasn't totally affixed to the hooks inside the plastic, so it's peeling up a bit. Do you have any idea how to hook the rubber back in? I could take the rubber all the way off, but I'm worried I won't be able to put it back on. I really hope you have the answer lol, I don't know anyone who has any drums at all. For context the rubber just hooks in with little rubber spokes hooked into solid plastic. I just have no idea how it's done.

One thing you you could possibly do with the cheaper game pad is get the Vic-Firth "Chop-Out" sticks and then use them. Then the rebound would be in the stick instead of the pad. Love the video ❤

I'm considering buying the mid-sized 75$ drum, but do you have to use it with those specific sticks? I would probably find it more comfortable to use arcade-style sticks, if it works. This is a fantastic review though! Thank you!
@tokaku3 жыл бұрын
arcade style sticks are MUCH longer than tatacon sticks which can make it feel a little awkward or uncomfortable to play with because the hori's drum face is quite small. There are wooden bachi out there specifically made for tatacons except they're a bit hard to find (all in japanese and less abundant). I recommend the default bachi for tatacon use in general. It's good enough! Modding the drum is a lot more important for hori
