I think(not 100% sure as I saw a comment about this on another persons reaction on this movie) that after this movie the video tapes idea and writing down everything became a treatment for people with memory problems like Lucy. Thank you guys so much for all the content! Story about this particular movie- I couldn’t for the life of me understand why it was so important to my husband that we watch this movie for the first time the evening before our wedding (breaking every tradition!) Now, I know. We watch it every year on the evening of our anniversary- we’ve had now 18 “1st dates”. The most beautiful thing about that is, it goes to show he was thinking about our 50th even before we toook our vows. Happy holidays guys!

This movie it's such a childhood comfort movie, I remember crying when I was little, because it's tragic, but they made up the storyline beautiful, they give a "real" and unique meaning to the "I'm falling in love with you every day" sentence♥️ Some scenes are random, but I really like how they always keep the tragic story and we know how sad it is, even if they're together :(

BTW, in case nobody else saw this: The pineapple is a symbol for Lucy's memory. The pineapple goes flying in the accident, representing her losing her memory. Dad gets a pineapple without her, representing Dad making sure Lucy doesn't remember the accident. Later, when Lucy and Henry are at the beach, there are a few pineapples on the ground, representing Lucy's memory slowly staying intact with the help of the tape.

I'm glad you guys mentioned how Henry was made out to be a womanizer at the start of the film, but when he met Lucy, there were no signs of that dude. I just realized there aren't a lot of stories out there with that type of setting, where the guy immediately drops the womanizer personality because he met THE one. It makes 50 First Dates stand out, because we see a lot of these semi-Henry Roth-types grapple with sticking to one vs. keeping their womanizing ways like it's a life-or-death situation. Lucy IS the one for Henry, he knew that from the very first time saw her, and he wasted no time in trying to make that happen. You don't see a lot of decisive male characters in similar stories these days.

I work with a nonprofit that primarily serves developmentally disabled and neurodivergent adults. One of my clients suffered a traumatic brain injury when he was a teenager (over 40 years ago) and as a result, among many other issues, experiences anterograde amnesia, which is what Drew Barrymore's character experiences in this film. Most things, he forgets within minutes, but over the years that I've worked with him, I've noticed some things working their way into long-term memory. He remembers a game he used to play with one of his former residential staff the first time she worked with him over a decade ago. He regularly asks about his old optometrist, who used to invite him over to watch football games, even though the man has been retired for years. I'm not going to say that this movie gets the exact mechanics right, but it certainly falls into the realm of possibility.

What I like best about this movie is that they didn’t play the memory loss just for laughs. They show the pain behind it. And treat it with more respect than I expected in an Adam Sandler comedy.
