I first arrived in Kuching in 1964, lived there for 2 years, married my wife there so it changed my life forever! Sorry I can't offer advice for visiting today's Kuching because it was so much different back when I lived there. I have a friend from Germany named Grete Fozdar still living there who married an Indian doctor who lived in Malaysia, so Germans can definitely survive and thrive in Malaysia. My great-great grandparents were from Hanover, maybe not far from where you're from, who left what was then Prussia for an exciting new life in the wild frontier of America. So maybe the "wander gene" is in the German genome. My younger son also married a Malaysian. If you want that great Malaysian makan for your whole life, having a Malaysian wife helps. My wife is actually from Melaka from the Peranakan culture.

Even though Sabah and Sarawak are within the sovereignty of Malaysia, they have their own immigration department. Even us Peninsular Malaysians need to bring our own passport or get the travel permit on arrival there. It really feels like traveling to a different country. The colloquial Sarawakian Malay is almost unintelligible to Standard Malay. They have their own unique culture, foods, and identity and home to diverse tribal groups. As a Peninsular Malaysian, Sarawak is home to one of the best cuisines in Malaysia. Their foods are amazing. You should try Sarawak Laksa, Mee Kolok, and Umai.

If you have the time, be sure to visit Mulu. The caves are amazing and the culture of the local people are different from what you have already experienced in West Malaysia. Its a bit expensive as you will have to take a flight there and there are only a few hotels but from my experience, it was worth it. If you like to see nature and be off the grid, Id highly recommend it. Keep up the good work Ken

Eating Places 1. Sarawak Laksa - Choon Hui or Chong Choon Cafe (Expect long queues if late morning) 2. Mee Kolok (Usual breakfast for Sarawakians) - Oriental Park / Ta Wan Kung / Kim Joo 3. Kueh Chap (If you are not into pork internal organs, you might want to remove them when you order) - Bintawa Kueh Chap / 3rd Mile Market 4. Pork Satay - Lau Ya Keng (Carpenter's Street) 5. Hawker's Centre (Night time only) - Hui Sing Garden / Siniawan / 101 Centre (large variety of food) P/S: Some of these are personal preferences. Subject to personal taste liking. xD Visiting Places 1. Waterfront bridge (night time has water dance show, you might need to check on its schedule online.) 2. Borneo Culture Museum (Newly built in town area, make prior reservation online so that you would not need to queue upon arrival.)

@creatireci28592 жыл бұрын
The driver is right. Culturally, Borneo is a lot different from west Malaysia. Different histories, tribes, languages, etc. though there are a lot of similarities too. A major difference is the majority of people here are Christians. The friendliness and hospitality culture is the same as in west Malaysia. You may find people here even more laid back. It’s best not to compare this region to the Peninsula and treat Sarawak and Sabah as different countries. You need to bring passport traveling from the peninsula to Sarawak and also to Sabah and between Sarawak and Sabah - as if you are traveling between different countries. Why? There are complicated historical and political reasons. Enjoy your trip.

Definitely a road trip from Sematan all the way up to Miri, crossover into Brunei and back to Malaysia-Sabah via road. If you're in Kuching, you can do daytrip to Sematan-Lundu, Bau & Serian(12th Divison main town). That basically covers 2 of 12 Divisions in Sarawak. As you make your way northward, explore Simanggang(2nd Division main town), Betong(10th Division main town), Saratok along the way and overnight in Sarikei (6th Division main town) or Sibu(3rd Divison main town). From there you can make daytrip to nearby towns and Kapit (7th Division main town). Driving upward, explore Mukah (11th Divison main town), Bintulu (9th Div Maintown) and overnight in Miri(4th Divison main Town). I've never been to towns further upward from Miri which needs you to drive through Brunei and back to Sarawak and if so, you'll get to Limbang (5th Divison main town) and to cross over into Sabah via land, drive up to the border town of Lawas before crossing over to Sabah. A little more or less than a week is all it takes to breeze through the road trip.

Hi Ken, i am from Kuching Sarawak. You must try KOLOMEE (local noodle). they have different versions in almost all of the coffee shops. Goes really well with Kopi O Kosong (coffee without milk or sugar)
