Here in the UK my bees are bringing in lots of everything and filling bars up with comb nearly as fast as I can put them in. I caught 3 swarms in the first weeks of May. The first was a good size swarm and is filling a topbar hive really quickly. The other two swarms were smaller with the 3rd being really small. They're all doing really well. My smallest colony are mainly black bees and are my favourite for temperament.
@Paulywarp
@Paulywarp 4 жыл бұрын
@@vaughnmelliottsr4258 I only have 3 hives in my garden. I'm a complete novice this being my first year. All my swarms came from my father in law's hives. 2 of them from one hive in one week. I'm lucky on the temperament side although the largest colony get more than annoyed when I do hive inspections. To the point where a few bees won't even let me out of the house. The other 2 hives don't do that. But the black bees aren't bothered at all about you being there. I've seen them fend off wasps and the odd bumble bee so they're defensive and strong enough so I guess I'm lucky. Good luck with yours.

We started with lactic acid this year. For varroa..have hives treted just with a spray botle and 15% mix lactic and destiled wother. From the testing i did by now i can thell you thet works good and the bees don't care about it. I use the botle like it is a smoker.. doing it last years but lactic acid is new in it. With a brood breke i think works the seme like oksalic, mabe better. Still testing..drops varroa realy good

I've been keeping bees 8 years, made tons of mistakes. I guess I got lucky and dodge the don't feed your bees bullet. I've always used sugar water, bought 300 gallons of honey last year, might do it again this year. I'd rather eat poorly for a few months than starve to death, I assume bees feel the same.

I think many folks think that they get bees and set them up and do not have to check them for a while. There is a lot of misinformation out there and folks are repeating it over and over , people need to start checking things out first.

@@curtisbeers9383 The reason that you get 20 different answers is that the local may be different, or they have different bees and other circumstances that may change with the locals between the informer and the user. @FloryJohann
@FloryJohann 4 жыл бұрын
I used Apivar last year and will again this year after I take the honey. Bees do not even know that the Apivar is there nor after you treat with OA. I also used OA ocalic acid last year. This year I did not use any treatment yet, because I still have honey combs in them.Will treat with Apivar and OA and I will try some Apiguard on a hive or two as soon as I take the honey supers off. If you can treat, treat now since the bees are almost ready to make your winter bees. Less varroa means healthy bees. It is easier to get healthy bees over winter. But, treat for mites. Formic acid is only good in cooler weather. If you have plenty of bees make a split since you can expect that bees may not make it over winter. Watch Kamons vids. You always can make a walkaway split.

This question is for kamon but others are welcome to reply, I'll keep it short and possibly expand on more after input. Due to misunderstanding my son picked eggs his first attempt at grafting with Chinese gt. I told him the bees would pick out eggs but it's their job not mine, redirected him to larva on next bar and ran them both. 2 days later I checked starter and both bars had cells. 40% acceptance on eggs, 80 on larva. I've been grafting 3 years, bee keeping 7. From 10 hives to 110ish, I know you use 1 to 3 day old. I'm wondering if this is worth pursuing? If so possible draw backs? Possible advantages? Any tweaking suggestion if I due pursue? I appreciate all comments?

Curious; your hives seem to have zero propolis. Mine lay it down constantly, year-round. Queen source irrelevant; same if bought, bred, or swarm capture. Every frame pull is a major affair. Scrape it all out, come back next week and it’s socked in again. Plus side, got a lot to make propolis tincture with. Maybe use it to coat my cedar fence.

@@برانيبراني-ز1ف Ah Yes it is very deceiving here. We have so much lush trees and green grass but unfortunately very little of the native plant yield nectar or pollen from Mid June to early September. Some areas of the US are not like this at all. Also having 50 hives in one yard really takes alot of resources to maintain. Even when I only had 12 hives in this yard many . Some of our best producing honey plants are invasive plant brought from other countries. years ago we still had a food shortage.
@peteGbee

So your promoting feeding your bees during a dearth so they continue rearing brood when the nutrition just isnt there for them to.properly rear brood. No wonder people have to constantly put chemicals in thier hives, you have brood factories and we are breeding queens for this as well, when there is no diverse nutrition they continue to lay like crazy which stresses and lead to pests and disease. I would rather my bees stop laying in dearths, as studies done in ferals and hygienic tolerant, resistant colonies show the natural cycle of brood breaks is a huge part of colony survival without treatments. So i prefer a healthy colony breaking during dearths, I still get plenty of fall flows, no difference then if I were to feed or not. I dont want full frames of brood in middle of july. Nor do I want syrup contaminating my honey when supers are put back on and they move it up. I know we all do things differntly and commercially is just totally a differnt animal and you gotta do what you gotta do to make a living. But me personally I feel we all need to figure out a way to get over this mite issue, hobbyists,side liners, commercial, there are plenty of commercial guys doing TFsuccessfully, not that we all have to be TF but atleast work toward a genetic solution and not to just a bee that gears to profit. Good luck man love watching your videos, we can agree on doing things differntly and still get along, something this country needs these days!
@kamonreynolds
@kamonreynolds 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Pete hope your doing well. Keep in mind we split every good and big colony at least once a year which does break the cycle to a degree. I do hope we can find better methods for varroa control but I have spent half my life looking for bees that have consistent mite resistance and haven't had any luck no matter what I try and how much money I burn. Doesn't mean we should stopping looking for better alternatives. I have found if I just let my bees go without summer feed most would be dead by November and those that weren't would be weak. Breeding from the survivors never worked well for me
