Its running about 200 RPM its rated for 257.. Takes a bit to get that 11,000 lb flywheel moving.. Not sure what the Torque Rating would be but it would be a lot.. To shut it down if it runs away you would have to take the plate over the intake and flip it over to cut the air..we leave it unbolted but have never had it give us a hint that it wants to run away..

Owning one of these engines takes some real dedication. And if you want one of your own you have to be prepared- the engine and flywheel ship separately, and you must be prepared to spend several thousand dollars to set it up properly.

Funny thing, a low-speed diesel is ideal for vegetable oil based diesel fuels. Also, the lower compression and lower peak temperature results in lower NOx emissions. Does need a preheater and exhaust reactor/filter system to meet exhaust emissions but a better fit for say and off-grid farm generator system that a high-speed diesel would not be able to match. Just that huge size and weight issue, but even in California a farm doesn't move all that fast.

I read about the cotton mill, but this engine may have done electric duty there, or before that. Flywheels that large are often seen on electric-duty models, in order to help maintain alternator frequency.

@Aussie50 The intake noise is the air intake check valve on the side of the block. It is a plate type valve and the plate CLAPS against the seat making this noise that is so familiar with Fairbanks 2 cycle engines.

The Icelandic park in Cavalier North Dakota has a two cylinder version of one of these that was originally the main power generator for a small town before rural electrification came to the area. Unfortunately, they were never able to put it all the way together and having it running due to someone having messed up on the concrete foundation measurements that the engine and direct drive open frame generator sit on. The engine is sitting about 6 inches lower than the generator it ran is set at. Oops.

Why not put some shims in there? Seems silly to me. I understand that you'd need a crane to lift it, but that shouldn't be too difficult (other than cost).

The torque is 1780.23 Nm at 200 rpm, 1648.36 Nm at 216 rpm and 1385.4 Nm at 257 rpm. 50 bhp are also 37.285 kW (I assume that bhp's are used as unit). Btw. this thing is awesome :) But I have two final questions: How high is the cylinder capacity? And how much fuel does it consume per hour? ;)

@lotsofcases12 жыл бұрын
A 28-pole AC synchronous generator run at 257 rpm makes exactly 60 Hz. If this engine was intended for other uses it likely would have had its full load speed quoted as a more "round" number like 250 rpm. Then again the generator would have been direct-connected and would not have needed that clutch.

@@evanchapmanfanman lol yeah a new one wouldn't be able to start that load. It'd detect it and immediately shut itself back down with an error code. @kdc43 ...more torque? this thing has enough torque to twist your Metro in half without any effort. Think of it this way, this single cylinder engine has enough grunt to turn a generator that can power an entire farm etc. No small 50 hp car engine could ever do anything close. Thees big old engines may only generate 50hp, but they will maintain that hp under immense load.
