Nothing is more musical to an engineer than to hear big, controlled inertia. There is a massive 2 cylinder FM at an ore processing station outside of New Idria that I used to ponder. It must have sounded magnificent echoing up the canyons.

Can remember going to work with my father when I was about 8 , it was on a lake dredge , a big 3 cylinder engine drove a massive pump , you could put a cup of tea on the handrail next to it and it didn't move . And the smell of it was fantastic. I'm 60 now. Miss you dad.

I helped decommission one of these in SW NY that was being used to pump oil out of 2 wells for about 100 years. Afterwards the people living in the area complained that it was too quiet and they had trouble sleeping.

Yeah, some of the older types sound really cozy. I could not sleep with a humming modern motor around. A steam boat is absolutely fantastic. It breathes like a big mommy.

April 73, I got to spend 5 months in Key West learning how to track Soviet submarines. The last of the US diesel's were being decommissioned at a part of the base that used to exist at the Southern most part of the island. I got to hear a Fairbanks Morse on a sub,, they had no muffler at all. Damn loudest engine ever!

I hope one day someone, if not myself, creates a replica of one of these massive old single cylinder diesels and converts all the internals using modern engine design elements. Like common rail computer controlled injection. Ceramic coated pistons, low tension and profile chrome rings (the old were cast iron). A positive pressure lube system that is filtered. Decently sized modern low alloy valves and inserts. Balanced crank and rods... Oo maybe even a billet rod and piston just for lols. Actually bugger it. Lets make the whole thing out of Billet Alloy just for lols. And last but not least it needs a volumetric efficiency greater than 1! That means we'll possibly a belt driven blower.... no wait. A short duty cycle electric blower for low end for throttle response coupled with sequential turbos with an interstage inter-cooler. Let me close by saying. This as an idea isn't meant as a means of improvement for to the original idea but more so an art project that would bring the old and new together in a visually confronting manner that would make one question the generations of improvement that have gone into what is essentially a 130 year old machine.
@Dave5843-d9m
@Dave5843-d9m Жыл бұрын
The piston engine with lamest perfect balance is a two-stroke radial four. All four rods are carried on a single crank journal and there are no moving valves. You get four power pulses per crank revolution and all moving forces are balanced. It needs a small blower for low speed breathing but its as simple as it gets and very powerful.
@aSpyIntheHaus
@aSpyIntheHaus Жыл бұрын
@@Dave5843-d9m I have seen a small 5 cylinder 2 stroke radial that someone hand built using Cox 0.049 cylinders and heads. When he first tested it he used an electric blower that pulled through a carb. However he did complete it by building a Blower mounted to the rear. This was an 'RC' / model sized engine but even though it was 2cstroke it still sounded pretty good. It was somewhere here on KZbin. Ill see if I can find it.

IN life at times, we have to trade off some things for advance ideals. As young person just out of the service I was lucky enough to not be consider for a job I apply for but was call back for another position in the company as a trainee in the avionics department. Was a place of learning kind of like Mas 4077 the TV show lots of good people who knew their job. with the freedom to be you were the owner was a wise man and did not preach but help people grow along with others who did the same working there. Had a customer ask for a stereo system in his aircraft, did i forget to say they had more than one FAA STC for aircraft. Got to go on lots of flights and this was one of those events as the stereo did not look all that impress to me at all But when the owner / pilot push up the power on the Cessna 421 and then reach over and turn up the volume on the unit it made the engine noise go away, and that's not ease in a c 421. and yes we were rocking Remember asking my boss what he paid for the unit, and he said 500 dollars and that's a lot back in the mid 80s for car radio. no, it was not made for aircraft.

Just as anything mechanical, maintenance is very important. If the air tanks were bled down every day or so, no problem. If condensation was left inside, then corrosion and possible tank failure is a very big concern.
