@TheTechAdmin2 жыл бұрын
@@penname8380 "they're barely bigger than a car tire", was my implication that even as an adolescent, they can do so much damage. I suppose I could have specified that I knew they weren't fully grown. But I thought since, "as big as a bear" being a known expression, everyone knew, that I knew, they weren't fully grown. So I took what I thought (hahaha) would be the route of less explanation.
@penname83802 жыл бұрын
@@TheTechAdmin Sorry, I get it. My bad. These two little guys would have ran for their lives if anyone ran out there and yelled at them, my question is. Where's momma. But you are right, I wouldn't want to tangle with even one of these small bears. Some people egotistically do not understand, once an animal, like a bear or a cuddly cute mountain lion for example get's to about 50lbs or so, that animal is inherently dangerous. A male bobcat averages about 30 inches nose to stubby tail and about 23lbs. Big pass on putting that cat in a bag. But you might be surprised by the number of people that don't actually know. I've worked as a group leader & sweep on a ton of guided day, overnight and weekend trips. I have had to delay, cut short, or cancel hiking trips because someone couldn't deal in one way or another with the animals or the environment that was beyond the scope of their understanding regardless of the availability of information. Some people have ingrained dissociative understanding of many animals. The cuddly teddy bear, Bulwinkle the moose, Bambi and Rudolf. These animals have the potential to kill you outright and sleep like a baby with warm titty milk afterwards. Some people never learned to swim, or some people absolutely lose their shit, sometimes literally when they hear their first wild animal. Like an owl at night, or actually see one and realise just how big some owls get. One guy that was about 35 year old once absolutely refuse to take another step, except to go back 'home' because an Elk we knew was up ahead about 80 meters-ish we couldn't yet see bugled. He was a big bull too. The guy pissed his pants, he literally thought it was a bigfoot and became hostile and aggressive when we tried to talk him forward, and reveal to him the animal he heard, even when other people in the group assured him it wasn't what he thought. We once called a vehicle in to pick up a woman to meet us on a US forestry road a mile from camp that wasn't aware of how dark it got at night in the pacific northwest. She had an emotional nervouss breakdown. Once we lost the early part of a day hike because a woman had a fear of mice and she became hysterical believing that the chipmunks and squirrels were going to eat her. Some of our squirrels are pretty hefty. Bears are the least sighted animal in our hikes. They generally avoid us and unless specifically provoked or surprised will not be of any harm. Which is the biggest balancing act. You don't want to sneak up on a bear, which is actually far easier than you might expect. Bear bells for example don't make enough noise to adequqtely prevent a surpise encounter. We have a nickname for them we don't tell the hikers. Allowing the bear to hear you a certain way might make the bear flee and never be seen. It's good to know where the bears are or will be so to best view them safely. Generally speaking of course, bears roam for miles.
