If this is the same Kialoa II, I used to sail by her during sailing lessons as a young teenager taking sailing lessons and racing in a 14 foot Lazer sailboat when she was docked at the Waikiki Yacht Club in Honolulu in I believe 1982. I looked at her in awe. What a beatiful sailboat. I believe she was waiting to sail the around the Hawain Islands in the Pam AM clipper cup. I was asked to be a "grinder" on another boat but my parents would not allow it as we were transfrering oversease as my dad was in the military. I was told the paint for her hull was $100 per gallon at that time and she is 78 feet long! Thanks for the memories. Amazing sailing by this crew through some tought stroms. Great job!

Solid boat, great crew. Nice to see a boat that isn't being submarined into every wave at 25+ knots. 50 knots and the cockpit stays dry...well done by the photographers as well. Lot of work putting together such good footage.
@gogo22976 Жыл бұрын
60 kts gusts is massive... the boat takes it unimpressed and just moves beautifully through the waves with minimal rudder correction. A testament of good boat design and and excellent seamanship. Well done!
@thomaselliott57310 ай бұрын
There was very little swell as they were in the lee of the island, but yes, older designs were far more kind to the crew in some ways.
@dap777754Ай бұрын
To be fair (or accurate) it looks more to me like she rounded up several times and the helm was simply being overpowered. I'm guessing they would have liked another reef in the main, difficult to do in that kind of wind. Not sure where you see "minimal rudder correction."

I just read Jim’s biography which is mostly about sailing. He’d be very proud of the way you have preserved this iconic racing yacht. Well done.

Beautiful, thanks for posting mate... 50 knots to windward and she looked to be making decent headway. She's still pretty impressive and her sailplan looked perfect for the task. A mate of mine crewed on her in the 80's and still talks glowingly about his time aboard.

Thank you for this beautifully produced video. As a sailor, I love those long shots that you held showing the yacht moving through the ocean for extended periods. So much sailing footage from the Ocean Race, Vendea Globe etc is a psychotic mix of 1- 3 second shots it drives me crazy as I want to see the ocean and the boats interaction with it. This was spectacular and together with the beautiful music, had me spell bound. Bravo!!!! More please!!!

Agree except I dont want to hear any background music
@JohnnyUtah-y3c10 ай бұрын
You might not, but the music is well chosen and the sound-editing excellent. Note the way the second "happy/relaxed" song fades, then as shit starts to get serious you hear a distress call with a guy who's lost his rudder. As this happens fade in Atoms for Peace "Before Your Very Eyes" which is about seizing opportunity, because if you don't life will go past you "before your very eyes".....

@@pauladams8475 Hi That may be one of the niced offers I have received in years, and I thank you very much for it. The simple answer is, one of the side effects of the cancer I have is vertigo, My balance is not what it needs to be, to be safe on a boat, let alone one that is racing. Luckily I have never had a problem with sea sickness, so for the most part other then balance, I don't let it bother me, I am just a permanently drunken sailer⛵. But again I thank you.😁 01-02-24

I remember her in 1975 screaming down the east coast of Tasmania with Windward Passage in hot pursuit. She set the race record which stood for some time in that race.

Back in this boat's original era, we did 320 miles in 18 hours on Police Car on the way back from Hobart. That is half the distance Syd to Hobart and made a mockery of this and the other boats at the time but nothing was said.
