Momota was absolutely the "next Lin Dan" everyone was asking for, another player at that unbelievably high level and far above anyone else. I'm certain that if he wasn't suspended and didn't have that car crash, he would have continued his dominance from 2019 and won gold at Tokyo without a doubt, reaching the heights Lin Dan did and also winning multiple world championships and All England etc. Then we would have had a great rivalry between Momota and 2020+ Axelsen.

So many set backs, so many off court struggles. What a pity for us but we have also to be thankful that he is still alive and well today despite that horrible car accident. He has won the fans hearts and this tribute is a great reminder of the wonderful rallies we will not see again. His shuttle touch, the game sense and defensive strength was frustrating to many opponents.

His eyesight was what was damaged and that's what it took to take him from GOAT to average pro player. Watching these shots again - one thing is obvious to me is that he had incredible eyes, reflexes and reaction times. All of that was gone after the accident.

Other than his car accident, people seem to forget that Momota was also involved in an illegal gambling scandal with another Japanese pro player, Kenichi Tago, back in 2016. This had him kicked from the national team as well as other legal troubles. The accident was the final nail in the coffin but when he returned after the ban in 2016, he was already a different player. The ban, the accident, plus the fact that by the time he returned, new players started to get in the game. You had Christie, Ginting, and guys like Lee Zii Jia, Shi Yuqi and Axelsen got exponentially better. Had he not been involved in that gambling scandal and that car accident, Momota would've definitely been one of the players to be the new Big 4.

I wouldn't say Chen Long or Axelsen was in their prime when momota beat them. Chen Long especially wasn't in his prime after he got married and had a child but I do agree Momota was an amazing player and it is sad to see that Japan was so strict on him but nevertheless that's why Japan is Japan. It would have set a terrible example for the citizens of the country if he got an exemption from their federal law just because he was a sports star.

@@DKMondays I meant to say, could have beaten them in their primes. Set a bad example? Rules are always bent by politicians for their own profit. Sadly Momota didn't have anyone's favor.

@@enigma137 we all know a lot of politicians are corrupt and they have too much power but a sports star doesn't quite have that much power if anything it's a great way for a politician to do something illegal then cover it up by making kento momotas gambling a bigger deal than it is so their citizens forget or don't even see the news that a politician did something bad. It's quite a common tactic for a lot of countries to do that. Momota was good but I don't know if I would confidently agree that he would have beat prime chen long given their play styles. Chen Long would have been the best in the world without Lin Dan and Lee chong wei and we both know even prime Momota is not beating prime Lin Dan or Lee Chong Wei so if Momota was born 10 years before he was the he would have been in the same shoes as Chen Long. Forever 3rd. It is hard to say without seeing the match to confidently say Momota would have beaten prime Chen Long

@@DKMondays Sportstars are known to be wild, especially elite footballers, sadly they are not given such rigorous punishment. Porn filming is legal but gambling is not in Japan. It's just ridiculous.
