Thank you for responsibly BUYING this radio and reporting some nice features but also demonstrating its unethical for us with licenses but also illegal and unethical transmission for all consumers. It goes to the core of too many of these producers of cheap gear giving all consumers and regulatory bodies who keep the airwaves usable a huge amount of outright CONTEMPT and DISRESPECT. Words aka "marketing and reviews" from them and many of the YT channels are not only being a disservice but morally being thieves and liars on top of bootleggers putting this on the market in any place that has regulations designed to keep our bandwidth usable. Spurious Emmisions and lack of recieving protection and detection makes a radio a box of junk parts not an HT Transceiver. My favorite radios that I drag around right now are the TYT UV390, TYT UV88, and Yaesu FT-65R. All of them would benefit from high capacity batteries with USB-C charging. I really want to like the Talkpod, but don’t really care for the harmonic problem. If they fix it, I’ll buy one. I’ve also noticed that this same menu, probably the same core radio, is in a few different new models. Hoping for TYT to refresh their line up soon to include USB-C batteries and better water proofing - an FCC compliant UV98 with USBc would be cool. UV390 is due for an update too I think.

So what happens is those USBC batteries become the spare for emergency use if I somehow burn through the 3200 batteries and don’t have a cradle to charge off of. Cheers.

Stacked up against a Kenwood, Yaesu, Icom, et al, the front ends of these cheapies are easily overloaded. You can use any SDR dongle or radio that displays a full band waterfall on itself or computer with just a wire antenna and a few carbon non inductive(wire wound) resistors connected to your SDR Radio. Its been a long and old tradition to use just sucha a setup to monitor your station broadcasting quality and sound processing. The SDRPlay RSP1 and others in that same quality and computer screen can literally show the entire band or even several 100 Mhz if your computer is that powerful. Keep that antenna far away from your transmitting rig or antenna while using some protection like an attenuator or carbon resistor and also have the outer shield running to ground or using protection Such as W2AEW and others teach about to protect recievers or test equipment monitoring and testing the output.

Compared to the spurious emissions of some of the FM broadcast frequencies around here, this thing would be pretty minor; so I'd say the FFC has some higher priorities than dealing with these. But, still, the filters to prevent this wouldn't be that expensive, it's a shame they opted not to include them just to save a few bucks on the price point.
Жыл бұрын
The broadcast transmitters are probably fully compliant with FCC regulations. But they're transmitting a LOT more power, so the harmonics are therefore also more powerful. On the ham VHF bands, the requirement is -60dBc, or -60dB below 25W (aka -16 dBm) for lower power radios. Although we are authorized for power up to 1500W on those bands, few hams use transmitters or amplifiers with more than 100W out. At that power level, the loudest harmonics would be at -10 dBm, aka 100 microwatts. FM radio stations use much bigger transmitters. Their power limit is either 50,000W or 100,000W ERP, depending on whether they are east or west of the Mississippi. (Usually only a couple of stations in each market are authorized for maximum power.) The ERP calculation includes antenna gain and feedline loss, so the actual power output of the transmitter doesn't need to be 50 or 100kW, but it will be 10kW (+70 dBm) or more. If the same standard of -60 dBc is applied, the strongest harmonic from that transmitter could be +10 dBm (aka 10 milliwatts) or more, 100 times as powerful as the one from the ham rig. The other problem is the likelihood of front end overload in your receiver. If you're close to that FM station, a lot of power from it is going to come into your first mixer, or RF DAC if you're using a direct sampling radio, and into any amplification stages before those. If your radio does not have good filtering for out of band signals, you could be seeing additional harmonics or other spurs that are generated in the mixer. There is an easy way to test for that if you have a radio with a spectrum display like an SDR: put some attenuation between the antenna and the receiver. If the desired signal and the spurs go down by the same amount, they are actually being transmitted. If the spurs go down faster than the desired signal, they are the result of receiver overload.
@costakeith9048 Жыл бұрын
@ You don't need a radio to detect harmonic interference from FM stations, you can do so with an old TV since the second harmonic of FM radio is on analog channels 7 to 13. This has been a significant problem for years, I remember decades ago listening to radio channels on TV channels in that range. The FCC regulations for broadcast FM are lenient at only requiring harmonic suppression to -80dB, they were reasonable for the 60's when they were introduced, but are markedly lax today. However, the leniency of the requirements isn't the primary issue, there are a large number of FM stations that don't even meet these requirements or don't even bother to enable their filters as it limits their transmission range. It's a notorious problem in the industry and unless their signal is interfering with another paying customer of the FCC -- traditionally broadcast TV, these days more often wireless internet providers operating in the 700 MHz range which is around the 8th harmonic of broadcast FM -- they won't do anything about it. The Wireless Internet service providers are pushing for a modernization of the regulations as signals even as low as -105dB can interfere with their service due to the extremely high-gain antennas they employ. But this would require expensive shielding, faraday cage levels of shielding, around FM transmitters to achieve. And, unfortunately, the FCC doesn't enforce rules uniformly across the board, they have an unofficial 'last-in' policy by which legacy operators get a pass on rule enforcement and they expect newcomers to the spectrum to work around the existing interference. The entire regulatory regime in the US is a complete mess right now.
Жыл бұрын
@@costakeith9048 You can detect that there are harmonics that way. But the SDR lets you measure them, which is how you can tell whether or not they are compliant with FCC regulations. In the same vein, I can hear harmonics of local AM stations on the shortwave bands.
