I mean, I guess it can be argued that any 1st appearance that appears on a cover is a spoiler. And in that, I think the comic community appreciates that as it usually coincides with iconic covers and high prices (i.e. Batman 181, New Mutants 98, Ultimate Fallout 4) As usual, great research to dig in and find 50 James. Love the content and shows the appreciation you have for the hobby as a whole!

Although these are spoilers I believe it's a trope where the cover promise something like "is this the end of Avengers?" and it shows all of them defeated but it doesn't happen (they take some hits but they win) so this is a way to throw a curve ball to us readers. I personally dislike covers with characters that have nothing to do with the story.

I grew up in the 80s, where nobody really cared if someone wanted to remain "spoiler free" or not. So I had many stories spoiled for me before even reading the books or watching the movies (including ALL of the big spoilers from the original Star Wars trilogy). Over time I finally learned that if a spoiler ruins your entire story, then you didn't really have much of a story. I knew Darth Vader was Luke's father before my first viewing of Empire Strikes Back and I still consider that to be one of the greatest films ever made. I was going to mention that "Death of Professor X" cover if you didn't include it in your list, so I was happy to see that you included it. Although they backtracked that in later issues, that cover was definitely a desperate ploy to try to increase sales on a "poorly" selling series, even though X-Men was still selling over 200,000 copies per issue. Apparently that wasn't good enough for Marvel back in those days. Still, the 1960s X-Men will always be my favorite era of the X-Men.

Its kind of a unique thing to comic storytelling, but the cover is literally there to tell you what is going to happen inside and make you want to pick up the book. Most of the reason for killing off characters is get sales up, of course they put that in as epic a way on the books cover. Also, a few of the covers you showed in your list weren't actually explicit about what was happening, they hardly count as spoilers, especially when so many promise things will happen, and yet they end up being of no consequence.
@Will-hn2yp21 сағат бұрын
The Life with Archie cover is an interesting case. The news had been out for a while that Archie was being “killed off” (it even made it onto national news channels!) so even though it is a spoiler cover, it really didn’t surprise anyone picking it up!

Not a FULL spoiler, but you knew a central supporting character in Spider-Man was going to die in ASM#121, and it becomes fairly obvious as the story progresses. It would have been a MASSIVE shock if there were no heads up on the cover

I think the 90’s had no qualms about putting spoilers on the covers of comic books. We all ate them up and wanted to see how it all lead up to the cover. That sold a lot books and of course fed into the whole spec bubble. I miss the 90’s 😔

With many comic covers, they imply something, but the truth is not what the cover implies. Hence, when there is a suggestion of the story on the cover, we usually don't know for sure. For exa,ple in Crisis when we see Superman holding Supergirl's battered body, we don't know for sure that's dead. Then, of course, are they dead forever?
@juanayon971321 сағат бұрын

@Spider-red_hood17 сағат бұрын
With the Jason being revealed as the red hood, I’m pretty sure that that is the second print variant (the original shows Bruce holding the helmet) and people might not know that that was Jason on the cover because he had been dead for about 20 years ( I know that that’s kind of how he and clayface look in hush, but still)
@Spider-red_hood17 сағат бұрын
And the red goblin one wasn’t a mystery, you see the whole thing happen
@Criner0520 сағат бұрын
To be fair, that cover of Batman #638 is the second print. I'll defend Walking Dead #156. You can't really tell Negan is killing Alpha on the cover. And given that the title of the issue is "Queen and King," I thought they were merely embracing, like for a hug or kiss. It didn't spoil it for me when I bought the issue. As for issues you didn't include, there are plenty of Walking Dead Deluxe covers. Granted they're reprints, but still.
