Amen on your remark about the beauty of hymns!!! Yes, Yes, yes, hymns are very beautiful on the dulcimer!! Plus some of the old hymns have a lot of repeats (in pattern) helping to learn them faster!! Here is an idea, if the nursing homes ever open to the public again (after COVID) the residents will be overjoyed to hear hymns on the dulcimer!! That is one of my personal goals to play there as a part of my church's nursing home ministry. All Believers in Jesus should set that as a goal!!!

Hey, I really enjoyed your tutorial. I am just beginning with a dulcimer - and you said that lots of "older people" pick up a dulcimer. I am 80! So not too much time left to learn! But thanks for all your tips, and I am going to follow some of your other tutorials. By the way, I am in England, and have two beautiful Appalachian dulcimers made in North Carolina.

This was a really, really great video. People that are good at a professional level put in many years of boring practice doing scale after scale. The best thing to do is to keep it fun. It's hard to believe you didn't start till you were 33, you only look to be 25 now. I guess peaceful music is good for the soul. God bless.

I love all of your tips. I don't use a noter very often, but I've found I like the sound the turkey feather gives it.

I want to buy good dulcimer where are you from I went 4 strings mountain dulcimer
@metocvideo2 жыл бұрын
I have a question, I was given a hand-made mountain dulcimer, which is lovely, made in 1975. Noting is difficult because the strings are quite high above the fretboard. I have lowered the action by lowering the bridge, but I have to reduce it a lot more before I can fret a note with little pressure. Is this normal?
@BanjoLemonade2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes you will see really high action and I guess maybe the builder was not a player. Yes don’t be afraid to lower the action as needed. I’ve even had to lower some at the nut as well. Just take it slow and you should be able to fret the note without it getting sharp. Have fun!

Great tips by the way, Joe Collins (jcdulcimer.com) also recommends 3 strings instead of 4, he thinks it makes chording a bit easier too.

I have had my mountain dulcimer for a few years and just piddled with it, but I now have a desire to play it. I was working at the time I bought it, but I am now retired and have more time to spend with it. I also have a ukulele and bought a strap yesterday that looks a lot like the one you are using in this video. I looked it up on the internet and it said the strap is interchangeable with the uke and the mountain dulcimer. My dulcimer does not have any strap buttons and I don't want to take the chance of causing damage by drilling a hole to insert the button in. I wonder if there is something I could do to use the strap. I am a hefty lady and my stomach gets in the way, so I definitely need some way to hold the dulcimer on my lap safely. Sorry for the lengthy message.

My dulcimer is pretty old, so I didn't want to put those buttons on myself. I took it to a luthier. No problem. (I sent it back to the folks who made it)

Thank you, this is very helpful. I just got my first dulcimer and tackling string change and lowering the action per your videos. Do you know of any blind or visually impaired players that have tips on accessibility? Hope you feel better soon!
@BanjoLemonade4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Sorry, don’t know any blind players. But I’ve heard of lots of musicians who play by ear and feel alone.

Wonderful video as usual! Hymns, yes!! Could some of the simple choruses work instead of nursery rhymes for ear training? So glad you are feeling better and pray that is true for your family. Blessings ❤️🙏🏼

Yes that would work indeed. Especially if you really know the hymn. Love that idea!

My essential is to never lean over the dulcimer when tuning. If a string snaps it’s like a weed eater gone wild 🙄😢 at best like being snapped by a rubber band and worst is being cut
