Well they were at the top of the Andes mountain in winter in a tiny white plane. They did arial searches but it was like finding a needle in a hay stack. There's a Netflix movie about it called Society of the Snow (or something like that). What is most wild is that they waited over a month and succumbed to cannabalism (no judgement) before finally even attempting to go down the mountain, even though they knew the search had been called off after 10 days (they managed to get a small radio working which is how they knew). They also had cigerettes and lighters, so they continued to smoke (also no judgement), but never once tried to make a fire, so a number of them froze to death. It's an interesting story about survival but also a truely baffling one.

They tried for 10 days to survive without food before eating the meat. You know, what can happen to your body when you are without food for 10 days, that too in the mountains where you burn 3 to 4 times more calories ???? They were in the middle of freaking mountains for 72 days...with no vegetation and no animals to hunt .....They wanted to live for their friends and families....they wanted to return home.... And MOST humans when they are in such a condition, will have their survival instincts kick in......So what was the alternative according to you that can be "done"? To die maybe? They were not savages killing people to eat. The people who were dying gave consent to the survivors to use their body after their death....it was such a team spirit! Even the pope and catholic Church which severely condemned cannibalism....pardoned the survivors because it was such an extreme situation !!!!! Atleast try to understand their plight....they were extremely young men who had their live before them....the survivors also turned out to be important members of the society.....one even become a doctor (Roberto Canessa)....there are several books available on their journey......if you don't want to read then there is a movie on Netflix called "Society of the Snow" .....It's okay to not know the details of the story...but anyone who has can only feel empathy for them!! I saw the two men that made the extremely rugged descent interviewed. The only thing that helped the one was recalling that in Catholicism, they believe that when the priest prays over Communion, that the wine and bread become the Body and Blood of Christ. Somehow, this thought carried him through and kept him from trauma over having partaken of a dead passenger to be able to be strong enough to survive that treacherous trek for help. They had a rough go if it. Thankfully, they made it, and the others were found because of it. It IS a story about survival.

It is quite annoying for those of us who are Uruguayans and from this part of the world, that of everything that can be learned from this story of struggle and resilience, the only thing they talk about and repeat is that they ate human flesh. It is very sad, it is sad because they did not do it for pleasure, they did it because they wanted to live, they did it so they could tell their families that they were alive and that they had not lost them all, because they wanted to see their brothers, sisters, children, fathers, mothers, entire families. Because their families believed that they had lost them and they had to live with that pain without knowing if they lived or not. And also tell those relatives of those who died, of those who could not return, that they fought as a team and did everything possible so that everyone who was there returned alive, although some could not. The morbidity is sad and that they only see the story for that reason without knowing what it meant for them and for us Uruguayans, what they did as a team and for their friends. They are free of all guilt, their fight was for love, love that was always for others.

I don't know these men. I'm sure many have since passed. Can't say therefore whether any are Christian. What I do know is God forgives those who believe. The Bible is full of stories of God's mercy and forgiveness for His children. Perhaps some, maybe all, of the men are believers. I know this. If they are, or were, they most definitely asked His forgiveness. He forgave them and I know this because that's what He tells us too, and I believe Him. After an experience like that, can't imagine life without His grace.

This story stuck with me from the moment I first read it in my early teens, I’m now 37. I couldn’t help putting myself in their position as I read the story & I just felt absolutely crushed for them. They tried eating the stuffing out of the seats to begin with.. which ironically wasn’t mentioned in this short, likely for sensationalism & shock value. If memory serves me correct, some even refused to eat their friends & starved to death. This was the hardest decision for them, either watch one another perish like they’d watched others, or resort to eating their dear friends, & all agreed they’d hope their friends would do the same if the tables were turned for survival. They also had one failed attempt at escaping for help. They did what they had to do for survival, to see their loved ones again. Heartbreaking all round x

Unfortunately, for many years this event was mostly known in the world because of the film 'Alive', a distorted version of the facts. And even worse, a lot of the videos in English (not this one) on this incident are based on that movie. The survivors dislike it because it's superficial and unrealistic, they've never seen themselves reflected in the characters. While in 'Alive', Ethan Hawke's character is the 'superhero' and the other surviving passengers are practically passive spectators; in reality, all of them had a crucial role in their struggle for survival. The main leaders and strategists were the Strauch cousins, but as the survivors say, each one of them was a leader depending on the moment and the skills needed during the 72 days they were trapped in the Andes.

The true story based on the book of the same name by Pablo Vierci and extensive interviews with the survivors and the victims' families. The critics and the audience call it a masterpiece. The survivors say it's so realistic that it made them feel again what they felt in 1972. I was in High School also. I remember this being on the three main News Channels here in The U.S. People in the Comments here seem to forget that Communications, as well as Air Support are different now, and not only that, but the snow was so bad that the Helicopters could not just zig zag around the Mountain looking in the snow, for a white plane, indefinitely. The local rescue organizers and the Country Officials called off the rescue, and people in this thread are blaming America for giving up because "it was too expensive, and America didn't want to spend the money". I don't get it, that even though we help in any catastrophe we arallowed to, we are always blamed for either being too late, or for leaving... when it is the 'Host Country' that calls the shots.

A book was written named “ALIVE”. It’s a fantastic read. It tells the whole story of the crash, the dead & dying, the choice to ingest the dead for survival (let it be totally understood there was no killing. They died of exposure & trauma) How they survived and the grit it took to not give up! (They were very religious and was taught it a sin to ingest human flesh. One man told the priest & they were absolved of any sin because it was done to survive) I read the book twice. It was bought in the 1970’s. The photos are included.

It's a story that contains anthropophagia not cannibalism. Since it was considered an act of survival and not grotesque pleasure, the Catholic church told them they had no sins to confess. Also the choice to eat the dead did not come easily and it didn't come without consequences like constant bowel issues. The survivors also had to endure days of constipation and days of diarrhea.

I think we should stop doing that. Cannibalism is when one human being eats the body of another human being regardless of what the situation is. There's a movie about this. I watched it. Was very sad. I forgot what it was called. But there was a few women that survived the crash. But cause of the cold they end up dying. I remember the man said eat any flesh but not her. He buried his wife in the snow. This movie made me cry. All 16 or 15 men survived. 3 men went to get help. They took some flesh with them. Which they ate frozen. But that was there only survival. They tried to grab what food and supplies they could from the plane. The food ran out. They went 1 day without food. And they decided there only survival was the deceased flesh. I wouldn't want to be in that situation but I will do what I have to. 3 men went out to look for help. They carried what they could with them to survive. 1 man had to go back as they was running out of food. So 2 went on with the journey. I don't know how many days it took them. But someone saw them. I remember they offered them bread. They was so relieved to find help and get better food. Try searching for a movie about a plane crash in chili that happened in October 1972
