BLUE ISLANDS ATR 72 REG G-ISLO squawked 7700 as it approached Birmingham Airport BHX-EGBB this afternoon Friday 31st May 2024.. Reports of smoke coming from the cockpit , though NOT confirmed.
A Squawk 7700 code indicates an emergency onboard the aircraft. It may be due to technical, environmental, or medical issues that results in an emergency situation.

I was on this flight . There was a burning smell which was caused by the air conditioning system so as a precaution the pilot put us and emergency services on notice . Luckily there was no fire and everything went smoothly . What I didn’t understand is why we were kept on the plane after landing a good while longer . Emergency services boarded the plane and checked it out before we were allowed off ! There may be an explanation why this was safer for us but I couldn’t work it out.

I think it's because if there is a fire or a threat of, the crews can get to the source quickly, without waiting for passengers to disembark. Otherwise, the passengers would be in their way, and, if there was a fire or an immenient one, it would spread whilst disembarkation happened.

Maybe because there was no immediate danger and passengers were safer inside the aircraft rather than milling around on the apron?

It's the captain's decision as to whether or not to evacuate the aircraft. Evacuation via the slides can cause minor injuries and there is a further risk of injury when passengers are moving away from the aircraft. In the Asiana accident in the US, two children who had left the aircraft by the slides were run over and killed by emergency vehicles in the chaos. You are actually safer on the plane unless there is an immediate risk to life, such as a fire inside the cabin.

No explanation required. You were being kept safe on a plane that just had to make an emergency landing. The captain etc know what they're doing, that's all you need to know.

Fire appliances look dull, whats with the blue and white? Bright green or yelllow look so much better at an airport, even red. Theyve painted them like parcel delivey trucks 😂

When I saw smoke in my car a lot of years ago, I panic a bit. I imagine what people feel when it happens in an airplane (fire is the BIggest problem in an airplane, nowadays, in my opinion)

I love how whenever there is an aircraft emergency landing, the fire appliances always wait in a position, which means they have to chase the aircraft all the way down the runway! Why not have a couple also near where its expected to come to a stop so they can kick into action quicker? See the same thing at all airports. They lose valuable minutes.

They always assume the worst case scenario, e.g. an explosion after landing, the position behind the plane is the safest. The plane could also, depending on what is broken, go off the runway, even then the safest place is behind it.

I *think* it just appears that way on camera, I’m not sure though as they looked faster once it was on the ground. But you know ow when you film an indoor home fan, through the screen the fan appears to be going very slowly when it’s not.

They do that to confim nothing were dropped off from the emergency aircraft and the runway is clear and safe for other Landing aircrafts.

Not sure why the emergency vehicles went all the way down the runway and chased the ATC around. I would have thought that they could have takan a more direct route to the plane considering where it taxi'd to?
