Three quick things: 1) We bought the car with 479,577 miles on it. 2) The clutch was replaced (only for the 2nd time) at about 480k. 3) AWESOME video! Miss the lovely thing. Please let us have it back at some point not too far away… but have your fun with it first!

That’s astonishing clutch life for a TD. I can remember a 306TD where the clutch lasted about 40k. Well, I suppose it had to be motorways didn’t it. Space ship mileage. Probably used to drive to Spain and back. Quite regularly 😂

My daily driver 2001 Xsara Picasso 1.6 petrol 8v SX (with panoramic sunroof and aircon) has done 107k. I bought it with 61k on the clock. The rattly gearstick is normal as is the whine in 3rd gear. The good thing - it's exempt from the ULEZ charge in London. It's been to Cornwall and back, and Isle of Wight multiple times without missing a beat, has been loaded up with furniture to move house, and with rubbish for the tip. A few things to add: - the backrests on the rear seats can be adjusted to be less upright. - the rear seats can be removed completely making it vanlike. The MK1 models are very simple and bulletproof.. Never a car I wanted but it was cheap when I needed a car. Passes the MOT each year and is easy to service.

We (my wife and I an our two adult children) visited the UK in summer of 2001 and rented a Xsara Picasso for 10 days. At the time I was taken by what Volkswagen had done with the TDI and the 1.9L HDI in our Picasso seemed to spec out almost identically. Living in the US, we had had no access to the PSA brands for decades, so this was our only experience with a Citroën of any sort. The car proved perfect for our needs in terms of comfort, luggage space and fuel economy.

As someone who is completely addicted to french MPVs of the 2000s, I got that "I must have one of these" vibes going on after seeing this.(The go-to-solution for this craving is to get a 1/43-scale model - there are far too many cars I would like to own, I'd soon end up with a car-museum if Ihad the chance to by them all) In many ways similar to the Scenic II I had, but also quite different. Will enjoy the videos on this one for sure. And I totally agree on what you say about SUVs vs MPVs. I have driven many SUVs in my job and absolutely every one of them sucks compared to the MPVs I have owned and own now. I guess the only major flaw with an MPV is that they don't let the driver show how manly he is - apparently that is important, for some reason...

We used to car share and I often drove the Piscasso, at the time had a '97 Polo 1.9D and the Piscasso was very quiet, smoothe and spritely in comparison. In 2002 I got a Clio DCi and that made the Piscasso feel a bit soft, it did suffer from side winds on the motorway. When it was a few years old it had a recall for potential broken front springs and the turbo boost pipe blew off making an impressive wooshing sound but not apprently effecting performance.

The Xsara Picasso underneath is actually a Berlingo, as you state somewhere at the start of the driving impressions. The car followed the design concept Xanae, which was much more stylish and hinted at more upmarket ambitions. The designers themselves followed this up with the much simplified “Berlingo Bulle” that hinted at what the initial idea had become behind the scenes. For the Picasso is in some ways the last car of the Jacques Calvet era at PSA. Calvet’s approach to innovation was to let others do it, and observe patiently if they had been right or wrong, and come up with a copycat product when they’d got it right. That’s how Matra’s Espace ended up a Renault, and PSA didn’t come up with an MPV until the mid-90s. By then, Renault had come up with the Scénic, and PSA could use something to counter it. But Calvet still didn’t trust the newly emerging segment and demanded the car be developed on a shoestring budget. Hence the Berlingo underpinnings, the extremely cheap plastic trim and lack of pleasantness in touch and feel. However, the rather long wheelbase and well set up suspension made them very comfortable and they handled discreetly, although German car testers detected a tendency to breaking away in oversteer if you lifted the foot or, worse, braked in a fast bend. It was only two years after Mercedes’ first attempt at front wheel drive had needed an ESC in similar situations, which had been discovered by Scandinavians and not Germans, so the Germans took it out on French cars for retaliation... because it took some time to fit ESC to the French cars, thanks to the Calvet approach. Memories....

I always thought this is what you should have bought, rather than the Berlingo... We've had five Xsara Picasso's in our family, two 2.0hdi, two 1.6hdi and a 1.6i. Without question they are the most comfortable, reliable and practical cars we have ever owned. The interior space, in relation to the exterior footprint proved time and again that the SUV concept is a success of marketing over common sense. I know a lot of people with much larger SUV's that have much less space inside. The flexibility of the rear seats being up, folded, tipped or removed, the acres of space, the useful cubby holes, the shopping trolley, the vast glass area. It was a suberb design, and far better than the C4 Picasso that followed. I would still happily trade our C4 Picasso for a good, late model Xsara one.

As the owner of an 05-plate Renault Scenic, I found this really interesting. Loads in common - the central digital dash, the rear stadium seating, picnic tables, etc. Mine's a Grand Scenic though, so it's got either a huge boot or a third row of seats, which wasn't available on the Picasso until 2006. Mine will also happily eat up miles in total comfort, but it's only a 1.6 petrol, so it's a bit revvy - about 3,500rpm at 70mph in 5th gear. Also as the owner of a high-mileage ex-taxi Peugeot Expert, I can't imagine a 700,000-mile example being on the original engine (but I'd be happy to be proved wrong). My own one had its original engine replaced at 250,000 miles (of mostly stop-start driving in town) because the cam followers had worn down to nubs and bits of them had fallen into the sump. It had been given oil changes every 10,000 miles. It's now on 440,000 miles but it's on its 5th engine, as each replacement was a cheap scrapyard replacement of unknown origin, some lasting longer than others. It's also on its 2nd gearbox, replaced at 404,000 miles because the synchro on 2nd and 4th had disappeared (other than that, it was fine).

For half a million miles this is in mint condition. Look around at cars that have done far less and look like a shed in comparison. The MPV segment died well before it's time I think, these were so versatile cars. I guess one of the last surviving if the MPV breed is the Berlingo along with the other manufacturers clones based on the same car. That interior is also a big surprise that it has stayed together as well as it has. Many thanks for sharing.

I was lucky enough to have this last year before Sion and Jim did (although I weirdly didn't experience any starting issues), it actually helped me out of a hole following an unexpected engine failure on a corsa. Im not so mechanically minded so didn't do anything to it apart from an interior clean. Did some decent trips in it, totalling somewhere around 3,500 miles and it was generally excellent and that diesel economy was much welcomed through last year! Great video :)

I had one of these new in 2005 and was very satisfied with it,I took my two grandchildren to Tobermory on Mull from Manchester,I filled the tank with diesel and set off for Oban 330 miles away. Seven hours later after a few breaks we arrived in Oban and then got the ferry to Mull. Toured around Mull for a few days and got half way back before having to fuel up to get home,that car ran on fumes to Scotland and back,kept it 3years and foolishly sold it because I fancied a change,big mistake,it had only done about 32,000 miles and was getting better all the time as the miles went up,I often wondered how good it got as time went by.

When i lived in Spain the taxi drivers used to wax lyrical about these cars and how long lasting, cheap repairs and space/comfort. All compared to the Octavias an Seats… I think the teardrop shape was beautiful and far better looking than newer x overs. Spacious, soft ride, comfy, frugal and not slow. Poor handling but it’s not a race car. Have to say those generation cars were fan. I had a ZX 1.9 turbo seriously fast handling car which rode beautifully.

I had an '07 Picasso with the 1.6HDi which sadly did what they all do and exploded at just over 100k. However, it was really economical, 56mpg was normal, a long trip could take it well over 60mpg. I've been informed that the egg-shaped body helps greatly with aerodynamics and keeping fuel usage down. Can easily believe that this one is doing mid-50s if you're not hoofing it everywhere.
@stiggyness1976
@stiggyness1976 Жыл бұрын
Really? We have two, one with 105k and the other with 131k, neither of them have exploded. Did you have your timing belt done before 100k, that is the only real weakness on 1.6 engine and 2.0. everything else that goes wrong is electrical, but with the correct diagnosis equipment and understanding of how the different ECUs interact with each other, fixing them is quite easy.
@PaulBaker85

@@stiggyness1976 It didn't explode as such, just that the turbo was letting go. It was denied an MOT due to the fact it was smoking pretty badly.

@@PaulBaker85 Turbos generally fail because people don't realise that there is a small gauze filter in the turbo oil feed banjo, which gets blocks and kills the turbo. Also the oil feed pipe can get blocked on the bends and again starve the turbo of oil and kill it.

We had several Picassos and Berlingos as holiday rentals in the 'noughties'. I predict that on long journeys you will prefer the quieter, smoother Picasso but day to day, do it all, around town and typical use the Berlingo will conquer (and probably be the final winner). Enjoy!

I had 2 of them, one being the only brand new car I ever bought, absolutely loved it. The internal trim was terrible though, I'm sure the plastic started squeaking on the second day of my owning it, but you can't argue with that amount of storage, and the 1.6HDi sipped fuel like a hummingbird. Depreciation on the thing was astounding, main reason my only new car 😀

We have owned 3 of these: 1.8xs with climate control, 2.0 hdi like this (they do drone at 70mph) and a late 1.6 petrol fully loaded. All reliable and probably the best value family car you could get. Remove all the read seats and you have the greatest dump car ever! You can move from front to readr on the move, get 3 adults in the back in comfort (the middle slides forward a couple of inches to avoid shoulder clashes) and the read seats DO decline further. Last ones not bad on safety with lots of air bags. AND you get the "monobox" in the boot! Only thing that gets stolen is the spare wheel in the cradle underneath.

For me a Xsara Picasso is a staple of the motorway hard shoulder on a bank holiday weekend! Clearly this example shows that with good maintenance it needn't have been so! Perhaps the low prices attracted motorists who skimped on servicing.

I had 2 of them including the VTR sporty one when the kids were little. Brilliant cars. Only prob is that the windscreen have a genuine very thin layer of gold in the lamination to reduce heat soak through that massive screen. In the old days of Tom Tom sat nav, the golden windscreen stopped the Tom Tom seeing the sat. So you had to buy the external aerial and run the cable through the door seal! Good old days.

Wasn't the biggest fan of being driven around in one of these as a youngster, but then I ceased complaining after it was replaced with a hopeless peugeot 307 with a 1.4.... The picasso was very roomy and fairly comfortable, but the trim was definitely very....french, by the time it went to the scrapyard at round 300k miles the interior was....interesting! Even had the rear axle replaced after that went wonky, but the engine starting to go finally sent it to the scrapyard
