That Ranger may not have turned out the way you'd liked, but I'm sure there are a ton of people (myself included) who learned a ton by watching you work it and diagnose issues. On that front I'd say it was very much a success. I very much appreciate you sharing all your projects with us no matter how they turn out, I always learn from your videos and I'm quite sure I'm not alone in that regard!

I've always had the best luck with slave cylinders by pushing oil in from the bleed screw at the bottom. But sometimes you just have to lead them out behind the shed and end it...

seemed to me like the fluid was moving waaay too slow, like there's a plug in the line or the slave is just cooked full of junk. Also fuel takes ages to get to the engine it seems too... too bad, the engine does kinda want to live =/

I had one of those years ago that came in and it would work and be doing just fine but next morning. You got it, supposed to just do a fast pump and it will come back. I had done the engine install and the clutch worked great till we changed it out. So bottom line, my tail on the line and a real good account I changed the slave an then did the slave on firewall again and it still remained the same. I didn't like those adapters they made for the lines as they fought me everytime. I finally just cut that line out and on the lathe and other miscellaneous tools made a line that went straight to the slave in bellhousing. I even changed the air bleeder as well. I get in after bleeding it out very well and still a problem an I thought what the "****" so under the dash for the million one time, and took that rod out to the slave and made a adjuster so it was tight too. I thought, here goes nothing as nothing has change... bam, it worked perfectly. I had spent a good week on it and trying to get some grocery jobs as well, beauty of working for one's self. I thought fixed an joys ran through.... come and get it folks as it works! So happy and they went out and got into it an it didn't work. Swear words were exchanged an I bought the rig from them to keep them happy. I was going to burn it at my cost and this rig was so pretty and tight yet no clutch... I was ready to scream in twenty lingo's. A neighbor of mine had wanted one for parts and money was my dictator at that time. My neighbor got that rig from me and took the trans completely out and exchanged it for a four speed that he had for another rig but it had the bell housing that made it possible to bolt the slave on and work the arm . It worked flawlessly. Everytime an so he made out good anyway. I had beat me.... bout time we hear from you too Wes

Drawing air through the system indicates that there is a definite leak in that line. I'd say it's likely those blue "fuel" fittings that you were talking about. They may be good for pressure, but certainly NOT a vacuum.

You're saying it correctly... plenum. Take off the IAC and clean it out as well with some carb cleaner. They get gummed up and don't like to move sometimes. Electrically it may be fine, but its dirty it won't work well. It seems 'lazy' when you move the throttle. Probably full of junk inside of it. Probably wouldn't hurt to clean the TPS with some contact cleaner as well. I bleed the master and slave the exact same way when installing 'dry' parts. Connect it all without it installed and actuate the slave and master manually. Sometimes when they are bolted up you cant get a full stroke out of them and manually moving the pushrod back and forth is the only real way to ensure all the air is out. This is only if you don't own a power bleeder with the correct adapter. That's by far the easiest way. You need the bleeder that looks like an insect sprayer that has an adapter to thread onto the reservoir. Add some fluid to the bottle and pump it up, it forces it right out once the bleeder is cracked open. I use the Motive power bleeder.

I will say that one particular Ranger I was having fuel delivery issues on, it ended up having a corroded power wire about 2” below the relay. Couldn’t see it inside the insulation. Only had 6v at the pump and 12v at the relay. Probed the wire until I found the voltage drop and viola!

Hi Matt!! The ranger that I bought for our family last november. Is 1983 4 cylender,4x4,with a nice canopy on top that was worth more than the truck. The previous owner does'nt know squat about electrical and he ghetto rigged wires up backwards ect..they were hanging down onto the drive shaft!! Burning and arching. None of the gadges worked,the hood release handle was broken off& had use vice gripes. The idle was crazy high or too low and stalled out while driving regularly.so I ended up learning how to roll start the truck just by driving it! Does have 2 fuel tanks. 4 wheel drive and the all season tires worked great & that's what we needed for last winter here in alaska. No salt put on the roads here yet now for the past several years. No sand at our intersections for years now. Our Tax dollars pissed away by the municipality!! Had to quick sell my truck to a guy running a homeless camp/drug den out of his apartment so he could sleep in the bed of the truck ,(sheltered by the canopy.) after he was evicted here last month. The canopy is in excellent shape and worth alot of $$.Ranger still had every seal leaking including the oil pan gasket,and him and his buddies are still driving it until it dies.I was upfront and honest about all it's issues for 2 months b4 they were evicted..unlike the claimed mechanic that sold it to our family..He bald face lied to us..I have no tolerance for liers,and none for people that ghetto rigg wiring to fire burning arching status..who do'nt know squat about electrical,in the 1st place.

First thing we learned at Automotive College; NEVER reuse an old gasket.
@psavel274
@psavel274 3 жыл бұрын
Not always the case... I've used 'old' gaskets in a pinch when I don't have a replacement on hand. There are many factors that determine whether it'll be a problem or not. I agree that if the option is there to replace it then it absolutely should be, but.... it depends if what you are sealing is under pressure, the parts material, i.e. steel, aluminum, plastic, etc; the type of material the gasket is made from, etc. I've hit up each side of gaskets with a THIN layer of RTV, copper spray, etc. and as long as it isnt completely torn you can usually get away with it. Like I said, if the option is there to replace it, meaning you have the gasket sitting there, and it doesn't have to be ordered, by all means, definitely replace it. Sometimes when they aren't in stock, or you have to worry about downtime on the vehicle you don't have a whole lot of choice. This also depends on if it's a customers vehicle or your personal stuff. Nobody wants a comeback for something stupid, but if it's your own shit, you can replace it at your convenience, or let the vehicle sit until the parts show up. I've been turning wrenches over 25 years, so what I'm telling you isn't just 'shooting from the hip.' I'm basing this on REAL WORLD experience.

Rangers are an addiction! Once you buy one, you will seem to always have one or more around. I just bought number four, and none have cost me more than $500.00. You can beat and abuse them, neglect them, and they will keep going. My first was a 92, second a 87, third 95 [still being used], and the most recent is a 01. Numbers two through four are [hopefully] all going to be running this summer. Have fun with yours.

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air. This in turn, turns into contamination in the fluid, which then causes the fluid turn eventually black.

That vacuum leak trick also works really well with an unlit propane torch if you're really hunting and don't want to waste all your ether 😉

Maybe have a "two for" sale and get rid of the red Ranger at the same time.

I don’t blame you Matt . When you were trying to do the vertical bleed I really thought that was promising but trying to get it started to reverse it out of the shop confirmed it . Ne’er mind .

Glad you're going with your head, and less with the comment section. I personally really wanna do a tdi swap on a range, but it's much easier to consider in TX vs... where ever that snow stuff is.

I've got an 83 ranger, I purchased 30 years ago from the orginal owner. It had just under 100K on it when I got it. I drove it another 100K before the engine had too much blow-by so I rebuilt the engine and upgraded it to an 88 EFI system (The original was carbureted and wouldn't pass smog). I have since put yet another 100K on it. I won't say it was completely trouble free, but the repairs were relatively routine and certainly worth it. I think I'll keep her another 30 years, God willing.

The best bleederpump on a heavy truck workshop in sweden (for clutch system) is a gallon jug with a washerfluid pump, switch and hoses too push breakfluid thru the bleeder on the slave cylinder up to the master cylinder. It worked perfekt every time. We had to change the washerfluid pump once a year.

Unfortunately I believe thats what did him in. All that happened with that was he shot air directly into the master. I love rangers but their clutch system is tricky.
