He's not kidding when he says it's a numbers game. With no professional experience (just customer service) and only personal IT experience, it took me over 200 submitted applications with just 2 of them reaching out to me and 1 giving me a job. Just so happens it's somewhere 5 minutes from me and I'm excited to make a career switch from Criminal Justice to IT right after Christmas! Also studying for my A+ now.

You have to think about yourself in relation to something like these 12 stats (see below). Just having a degree doesn't mean anything, neither does having a cert. @JoshMadakor
@JoshMadakor Жыл бұрын
Hey Simhawk! Thanks for watching and commenting. I *ALWAYS* recommend people to get a job either before university, or at least get one before they graduate. This will off-set some of the opportunity cost and reduce the amount of time you miss out on getting experience. The CourseCareers course will absolutely help you to do that and will be an excellent supplement to your degree. I talk about it specifically in this video (especially from the timestamp): kzbin.info/www/bejne/opvGq5JqnL56iMU I talk about what your "Stats" look like after graduating college vs applying the principals from the coursecareers course :P Hope this helps!

Can you make a video comparing the difficulty to salary ratio of entry level certs? Like basically how easy it is to get vs what the payoff would be. I'm doing CS in wgu but want a couple of IT/cyber security certs but nothing too difficult as my focus is the degree. But I also don't want anything that's pointless to get. I already would get A+ through the degree though. I feel like this would be a somewhat commonly asked question

Hi Josh, I'm starting my Cloud Computing degree at WGU next year, and I was wondering which is the best path to take, AWS or Azure?
@JoshMadakor
@JoshMadakor Жыл бұрын
It honestly depends on what you want. I don't like AWS honestly so I do Azure, but they are interchangeable for the most part. For example, my team hired someone @ like around 130k who had never worked in Azure before, but he had AWS knowledge. It's kind of like learning how to bake a cake, then having to bake cookies the next day. You already know how to bake, you just have to get used to the nuances of making cookies. Maybe a bad example, but maybe you get what I mean :P.

I recommend getting a degree eventually--I talk about this in the course. To be highly employable to a wide range of employers, there are a bunch of different thing you have to care about and having a degree is one of them. You don't have to finish your degree before you can start working though. I would recommend signing up for the Free section of the IT course in CourseCareers and watch the third video, specifically. I go into depth about this. Hope it helps :)

@JoshMadakor
@JoshMadakor 7 ай бұрын
That's something I think about a lot...how job hunting goes in other countries. In the US, you aren't required to have a degree for ANY of tech really, much less entry-level IT. If it's the same in your country, the course will help a lot. It focuses on 12 "pillars" or areas you need to elevate for you to land a job as fast as possible and focuses on learning a lot of "mainstream" tech that you can find at most entry-level IT jobs (Ticketing Systems, Active Directory, General Networking, VPNs, Cloud (Azure), File Permissions, etc.) Hope this helps! and thanks again! P.S. I definitely recommend checking out the free portion of the course (how to get into IT). I think this will help a lot and answer more questions that you might have! joshmadakor.tech/it In addition to this (and MOST importantly), a large chunk of the CourseCareers curriculum is geared toward telling you what you need to do to get a job as fast as possible. If you follow the curriculum, the time it takes you to find a job will be limited by your own preferences. In the "find a job" section, we cover: resume, portfolio, social network presence, interview deep dive, and application methods and frequency with an explanation of probability.

I'm knowledgeable in computer and very passionate. Just disappointed that I can't still get in the industry. @Josh Madakor your comment would be appreciated

Hey! You should be fine at 52. There is much less ageism in IT vs Big tech SWE. This course is based on the 12 pillars of employment, which are 12 areas that you can focus on improving yourself in, in order to get a job. Typically, people will focus on JUST a degree or JUST their certs, but it's much more than that. This course helps fill out the other areas. For a more in depth explanation of this, check out the 3rd video in the free intro to IT course. Even if you don't take the full course, this will provide you with some really actionable info. Hope this helps!!!

$41k isn't a big deal anymore. depending on the location actually. In my location many places are starting around $17/hr. I recently got a job for a food place for $19/hr. Seems tech jobs aren't paying enough anymore.
@JoshMadakor

It just depends on the location right? I think he lives in Philly. Probably unlikely you're going to make $19/hr in flyover states, but I could be wrong. Definitely in Seattle, you're looking at like $55-60k stating in IT, hehe

He doesnt make 41k, he makes 46k. 22.26 an hour at 40 hours a week is 46k a year. Its 41k if you do PAY*40*4*12, but there is 52 weeks in a year, not 48, so that is not the right math.

@@cyberlocc thumbnail showed about $41.5k. I dont think my comment was about what he was saying in the video and rather about the thumbnail advertisement. Besides numbers aren't accurate I admit but even at 46k that's not a whole lot for my area. I honestly forget why I made this comment though so I'll rewatch the video.

Hey Tony! Great question, I've been asked this a decent amount before actually. Traditional certifications (CompTIA, etc.) tend to be very broad and theoretical with a lack of depth and practical application. Whereas the CourseCareers IT Course is intentionally more narrow but goes relatively deep into the topics. Most topics covered in the lecture portion have a practical component in the labs section that will result in you gaining usable skills and a better understanding of the technology. You won't be able to pass CompTIA exams by going through CourseCareers, but you will have a lot more context when learning about many of the topics you'll find in those exams. Likewise, passing CompTIA exams doesn't really translate to any kind of practical hands-on experience. That's not to say CompTIA exams are bad, they are very useful for theory and HR and recruiters often appreciate them. Hope this helps! to answer your question, certs like CompTIA A+ and the Google IT Support Professional cert are great pairs with CourseCareers IT. I especially like the Google cert as it's better in general and for a fraction of the price. Just not as well known :)

Does course careers have an internship? What is the job placement rate ?
@JoshMadakor
@JoshMadakor Жыл бұрын
They are working on this now but none are established yet. It takes a while since the program is new. I taught the course though as if internships didn't exist with a focus on how to find/land jobs as efficiently as possible. :P It's hard to calculate rate since not everyone is looking for a job. Some people are already working, some people aren't looking after the graduate or they are shooting for something way higher and just using CC as education. This is something I think about a lot. Maybe I'll make a video thoroughly answering your question. I'm confident people can find a job with relative ease if they follow the course, assuming they are open to remote work and don't live in the middle of nowhere, but it's hard to calculate placement.

Not to mention you have direct access to me. If you don't care about that stuff, you _absolutely_ shouldn't buy it. Even I pay money for courses because I want to save time. It just depends. Experience is everything. After grabbing 3 entry-level certs (Google IT Pro, CompTIA ITF, JAMF 100) earlier this year, as I didn’t know about coursecareers, I did get lowballed for pay rates/wages in my area, before my current employer extended an offer that was too good to turn down and got me out of another industry. I’d say CompTIA is general and broad as you put it, but employers are wanting you to know more than topical knowledge and more hands on certs are better.

While I congratulate people, and it’s fantastic to hear, to be really honest, may sound a little bit of a downer, do something different rather than IT-- it can be a very stressful, thankless kind of a job and it doesn’t really hold too much professional weight overall compared to other professions- desktop support, stressful--helpdesk can be stressful, Cybersecurity way too stressful, coding… really depends-- infrastructure I wouldn’t recommend it too stressful… educational requirements kind of a good thing. You don’t really need any, to be honest. This is where the problem lies.--if I was going to recommend education and vendor, certifications have their own merits. Without a doubt if you want to work in government or big corporate, we will potentially need a good computer science degree, and I’m not talking about just an online degree a proper one.-- backed up with some vendor certs always good--but in the IT world experience is King simple as that.
