$500 station wagon, will it start after 25 years parked?

This is our 64 dodge dart station wagon that we purchased in an older video. It has a 170 slant six inline engine and a push button automatic transmission. This car was sitting outside in a driveway for over 25 years. Can we get it running again? Stay tuned for future videos of this car and our many other project cars.

Hi; The reason for the slant is its Chrysler ' s early attempt at ram induction. The long intake runners rammed the mixture into the cylinder giving it 15% more hp than a regular 6 cyl. The engine came in two versions. 170 cubic inches and a 225 inch versio Michael Rzewuski

Back in the 1970's my wife and I bought several 500,00 cars. Back then you got a car with a perfect body and interior. In the rust belt north. And you could drive it with no problems for years. Miss those days. My first car was a 1965 Mercury Comet four door sedan that my dad bought for me for 75.00 dollars. Transmission was shot, so I went to a local salvage yard and bought a good used transmission for 35.00 dollars. My brother and I installed the good transmission. Drove it for two years before giving it to my sister and she drove it for six years before trading it in on a 1968 Ford Fairlane.

Wow, great find! My dad and I rescued an abandoned '62 Lancer wagon in 1977. The engine had been run dry, which caused the abandonment. He found a '62 Valiant sedan wrecked with a good engine. That was an aluminum 225 S6, which dropped right in. I drove the resulting "new" car as my very own, first "daily driver" transportation until 1987. By then it was taking too much time to keep it roadworthy (brake slave cylinders froze-up). Sold it to a guy who collected this particular model family for $1200. Good luck with this project. The stares and comments from people who see it will be worth the effort.

WOW! It sounded smooth when that thing finally cranked up! Blew a bunch of junk (and roaches) out of the exhaust! Great sound!! Just need a muffler and you are on your way! I love the sound of a straight six, the car manufacturers went way off course when they stopped building the straight 6! Of course, you just might want to loosen up those front wheel bearings a bit! That kid will never get sick. Eating off the floor with a goat and popping a soda from the bottom of a dirty shoe! Priceless!

The oil issue on plugs is from the inner seal insert around the plugs . Depends on year some are removable and have gaskets and o rings

The spark plug drool tubes take the same o ring as the 426 hemi! Same part number. The tubes are different though. Don't damage them because they are impossible to find.

It had a 340 4 speed with an 8 3/4 sure grip rear end from a Barracuda Formula S Installed in it, Cragar SS's , wide tires, hurst shifter etc. That little wagon would absolutely haul tail! lol. Heck's was a department store chain from West Virginia. They had over 150 stores throughout several states, mostly Mid-Atlantic, a little of the Midwest, Virginia, NC, and Maryland. They started going broke in the mid-'80's. The filter is "Private" label for them, mostly likely made by Purolator under contract.

Excellent video, bringing back history to life. I know two differences between a 63 and 64 are the grills and the tail lights. They are interchangeable though. The tail lights are unique to the wagons and having been looking for some, are pretty rare.

When checking the transmission fluid level on a '64, you're supposed to run it through all the gears first. You mentioned hydraulic lifters earlier in the video. I'm pretty sure it has solid lifters. Yeah, I've owned two '64s in my life. Love that pushbutton transmission.

We had these in Australia, best cars ever made. My Dad had a 66 wagon with a 273 , he bought from my uncle after he drove it from Katherine in the northern territory to Melbourne with no oil . He got it rebuilt and some work done , used to beat 351s easy. My mate has just rebuilt a 65 AP5 sedan with the slant 6. Great old beast. The later ones in Australia had our Hemi 6 and they would make 300 Hp easy. The early 70 model VG valiant was a very good car with the 245 Hemi. The ones after had 265s and they went so hard and lasted forever. I've always had a 77 regal se 318, did 750,000 klms with a stock 318 fireball , we didn't have much polution crap until 78 so cars were very fast if you pur a 4bbl on. Now it's got a nice 360 ,Edelbrock heads and all the good gear. 450hp . Wife found a 67 impala factory rh drive Holden had sent over here back then. They are a beast of a thing, 327 should hammer. Used Edelbrock heads and roller rockers with a Lunati voodoo cam and lifters. The 327 revs like 318 except the heads suck on 318s. The young bloke there is going to be a genius with cars . Good man keep him learning.

Love this vid! Those old MOPAR slant sixes were great cars. I like the flat inner fender wells; they are a great place to set tools. And getting the young folks interested in a family project is commendable. Love it when the young fellow said, "Maybe it's not getting gas." How many young people know anything outside the world of video games? I did get a bit nervous when you injected gasoline into the carb. I would have tried ether first. Glad you still have your eyebrows. Anyway, thanks for posting. (Many years ago my buddy and I swapped a four speed into a three speed Valiant. No mods needed. He said three speeds weren't enough; a "bridge was needed between second and high. I've got a lot of MOPAR stories.)

I’ll say , from the thumbnail , this model year clearly shows how innovative the Plymouth was . The body lines clearly show how the rear window , sail panel , deck lid and trunk and rear clip was remodeled to make a station wagon body without too much change . That was as clever as it was ingenious . Rocky was great help . In addition to absolutely cracking me up , rocky will take care of ridding the valiant of its unneeded excess body scaling . This start up was nail biting . It had me wondering if pulling the valve cover to free up the valves was necessary . Carbon build up on the valves was taken care of with the rev up time up 👍. If I were there , I would have been kneeling and praying to the almighty tower of power ! After all the hibernation , it roared to life and doesn’t sound too bad at all ! Yeah , the brake drums will have a future episode of making use of t-your drum puller . Well , the expense of the tool will help you get your moneys worth . In that respect , pay for itself ? Once again , another successful carb rebuild / refresh . I should remember the carter Yf parts since I’ve been through a few but I rely on rebuild sheets and call it good , sorry . It’s been since my junkyard days since I’ve seen a push button drive auto trans . This is a blast from the past . Accelerator pump cups , yeah , I don’t either know what material they’re made from . I’m calling this car a survivor . Looking forward to a drive too . Since you , Ralphie , rocky and the girls are on the job , I got my faith 🇺🇸

Love the 64 darts! I've owned mine since '74. Yes the accelerator plunger is a leather cup, not always so, but it's fairly common on many cars of that vintage. I usually soak the leather cups in oil, before I install them. Also, don't scrimp on the hydraulic brake parts. That is a single reservoir master cylinder. You lose pressure at any point in the system, you've got nothing but your e-brake. When my wife was driving my 63 dart, the left front flexible brake line blew and she had no brakes coming down a steep hill in Seattle. Somehow she survived the big hill, and continued driving home REALLY slowly, using the auto trans park pawl when she HAD to stop.

Remember to always spray the starting fluid at the same time your turning the car over . And from what I remember when I had my 64 . I had to put the pedal to pump it and then put the pedal to the floor. To start it when cold .

Instead of gravity feeding the carburetor, try gravity feeding the fuel pump to prime it, then tap on the valves to try to free them up just like the float valve.

I had a 67 Dodge step side truck with the 225 S6 and every now and then when you turned the key to shut off the engine the starter would engage the flywheel, and you could put it in gear(3 on the tree) and drive the thing. Barrel rolled it 😭b4 I figured it out! That truck was in immaculate condition! Always started . It had leather bucket seats and a matching seat/cooler in between them! Room for a case of "root" beers and a 6 pack of bbq Vieeenas on the shelf. I paid $750 for it in 89 or 90. That's a perfect reason not to drink and drive, or in my case, not drink at all!

Those old slant 6's will run if they turn over. I had a 64 dart 225 with a 3 on the tree and over 200,000 miles, it was well abused. The old girl ran perfect but rotted out so bad I finally had to give it away to a neighbor kid that ran it in the woods and finally killed it. He ran it with water in it and it froze and cracked the block. It was one of the few Chrysler products I actually loved. The other was a 1970 Plymouth Fury 2 with a 318 automatic, it truly was a great car. Back in the day you could find a car for 50 bucks beat the heck out of it for 6 months and go find another. I love your videos, they bring back a lot of memories of my younger days and all the really great cars I let slip through my hands.

Had my doubts for it to run. Sounded like no copression, but perserverance saved the day. The ignition switch is easily removed. Take it to a locksmith, he'll cut a key by code. Good luck on the wagon, they just don't make them anymore.

Probably one of my favorite videos so far. From the “r u n n o f t” joke and Ralphie’s “whuuuut” response, to Rocky climbing up your back to get on the roof it was epic. It was funny when Ralphie tried to scare you when you hooked up that battery. You know darn well you would have done the same if he had been the one hooking it up. Then to finish things off your wife tried to give you a shower of RC Cola lol. Seems like humor is lost on so many folks these days, it’s nice to see you guys having so much fun.

Hecks was a department/variety store throughout Tennessee, Virginia, Kentucky and West Virginia in the ‘70’s. There was also Grants, K-Mart, Rosses and Hills. You typically found these stores in the coal fields of southern Appalachia. They often had huge toy departments. Me and my sisters got lots of model cars, vinyl record albums, bell bottom jeans and all kinds of other junk from those stores. A boy from my home town was a corporate pilot for K-Mart for years before they fell down. Montgomery Ward and Sears had catalog stores where you could pick up stuff you ordered from the enormous paper catalogs. MW would mount tires. I understand EBay and Amazon now have small ‘stores.’ I experienced lots of the cars you work on when they were pretty new cars. The elderly couple that lived across the street from us had a ‘65 Dart coup in tan but it had the column shift. My older sisters boyfriend had a ‘61 Valliant with the push button. You’ll never kill a slant six.

my mother got her first station wagon in 1966 my dad bought a new Plymouth Belvedere II 3 seat model - it was Mom’s first car with power steering and brakes and factory Airtemp air conditioning - she thought she’d died and gone to heaven it had a 318 in it and electric back window

Nice! My 66' Plymouth Valiant fired off right away after sitting for 6 years, with a new battery. Those old slant 6's are awesome. It's the 225, and it was my daily driver for the past 5 years. Decided to restore her last year.

I am a new subscriber Jan 2024 going back and watching all your old videos and have watched you say this comment several times. I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but if you pull around a snatch block pulley to reverse the direction of the pull, it does not double the power of your winch. The tension in the cable is exactly the same as if you were straight pulling (assuming a theoretically frictionless pulley). Pulley friction can increase the tension, but that's probably negligible. Only by pulling from the winch, to a pulley, and then back to the same point as the winch would you double the pulling power of your winch because then two lines are pulling in the same direction splitting the tension between the two. Also you have to pull twice as much line in this scenario to move the object the same distance. Love the work, the content, and the vibe of your channel for sure. Keep up the great work and it's awesome you've been able to turn this in to your full time gig.

Had a 65 Valiant wagon. Starter solenoid went out. Started it with a screwdriver, drove to the parts store, disconnected the battery, leaned over the drivers fender took out the starter got another and replaced it like I took it out. I’d love to own your Dart!

My mother and I once lived a few blocks away from a house which had an old Desoto parked on their front lawn. the Desoto never moved. The car looked pretty good when we moved in. The roof was quite rusty when my mother and I moved away.. I wish someone had restored it. Had lots of chrome trim an had fins on the back of the car.

I'm from Mexicali, Mexico, I had one just like it, it belonged to my brother-in-law and he later sold it to me, it was a great vehicle, we had changed the original engine for a 318, and it flew on the highway, back in the 80s, my girlfriend and I we enjoyed traveling in it, it was very good on the road, and very comfortable, too bad I had to sell it due to money problems, it was in the 90s, even today I regret having sold it, I have never seen one like it again and with this video I feel nostalgic, thanks for sharing.
