That was outstanding job. People have a hard time understanding why a larger company wants the money they want when you are getting bids. The money it takes to have the equipment you need plus the labor adds up quick. Too many companies would pass on that job just because of the size of it. You bid that about as tight as you could. Great information for customers as well new contractors starting up.

Well said! It can definitely get frustrating when you don't get much profit but customers still act like you're overcharging. Thankfully I don't get that too often

@@Dirtmonkey Sure is. Equipment costs have to be figured into job , labor, insurance , materials and a myriad of other factors plus experience and knowledge of work. I would not cut my own throat just to get work. A day down doing maintenance and other things I would prefer the prior to busting my butt at a loss.

@@Dirtmonkey $30/hr. for labor?? Making $2400 in profit for a 8 hour job ($300/hr. in profit). Just paying FICA alone is $2.25/Hr., so now its $27.25 Are you including any benefits, time off, travel time, etc.? Are you saying you make $60K a year, Tim makes $60K/yr (how can someone making $60K a year drive a $45-47K truck), etc.? Even if you used $27.25/MH and paid the younger guy $20/Hr., Tim $25/Hr. , and you $38/hr. (you now make $79K/yr ). Was it 8 hours on site, but really 10 hours with giving est/prep (30MH)? Then you are paying travel time back to the office (less $$). I don't even work in landscaping, but now I can hear many landscaping customers getting bids saying "that Dirt Monkey guy charges $30/hr.", why are you charging $40/hr. in labor. You just justified why customers feel they're getting overcharge! They see that a customer just paid you $5K for a job that took 8 hours ($625/hr,) you spent $2600 ($325/Hr.) with all your costs, and pocketed $2400 ($300/hr...roughly an inch thick of $10 bills).

Stan, I really appreciate you running through the numbers on this one. We have recently started a lawncare and landscaping company and videos like this are extremely helpful to us! I hope you can make some more of videos that cover how you bid jobs and crunch numbers. Also, your videos have made a huge impact in teaching my partners and myself how to do some jobs that we never would have ever considered before due to lack of knowledge about them. Thank you for being an influence in the industry and thank you for giving those of us venturing out on our own the knowledge to get it done!

Nice work as always. You need to get back to more of the jobsite videos. I always liked seeing Blaine, Sam, Alex and the rest of the guys doing what they do best. It always has surprised me that you don't have at least one small dump truck. This job in particular I think a small dump truck would have made getting your material back that driveway much easier. I like the dump trailers too, but a truck and a long trailer can be hard to get into a lot of places.

I always used matts and or plywood to not damage existing landscape. After pulling matts soft rake and blower is a must. "Dirt and seed" is unacceptable... Where you put the material pile 10-12 rolls of new sod should have been installed. Seed never matches existing sod. I always left a job without new damages."" Only improvements" Not to mention seed will washout on those hills and might not ever look nice. I would of had to re-sod all the damage my crew caused. Think you should have re-set existing top 2 boulders next to foundation to level. 30.00 hr. for labor? when in 1980 lol. Thanks for the video, I might have to come out of retirement. Never thought I would be missing the work. The brick-block wall made me smile. Some people lol

Your cost break down is excellent. Small jobs most always cost more and a lot of guys miss the details. I think you missed something as far as the destruction of the lawn. I would have put down 1 1/8th inch sub-floor over the lawn to keep the ruts down to a minimum and used a tarp under my dirt & rock loads. Just my opinion. As far as the water proofing (black paint) on the foundation wall, that's a contractor oversight. he / she should have had the concrete (grey rubber) paint well below the 8" required soil line. A simple chalk line after paint was applied would have taken care of that problem. People who own high end homes aren't as much concerned with the proper construction of the home as they are the looks. It has to look pretty!. Great job on job cost and break down. All new contractors, no matter the trade, should pay attention to this video! Retired now but still enjoyed this one!

Nice job, & well put for break down. EXCEPT, for time spent talking with homeowner, walking (& measuring) the site, putting together the estimate (& with current price fluctuations, lol), presenting back to homeowner, etc... I assume that's not in your overhead costs? & ya hope to make at least 10% added to the hourly to help clear some overhead (or at least the repairs fund, lol) profit margin. And pray ya don't need to spend a few more hours on an additional day, because does that waste time pulled from another job. I know some of this are intangibles, but they certainly can add up with smaller jobs. Thanks again for the lesson, is gonna help folks !

Nice tutorial Stan. I would add that every piece of equipment from a bucket to a machine to a truck or trailer should have a per day expense number attached to it. For instance a truck will last in your work tops 5 years. Total cost to lease/purchase plus maintenance and fuel ÷ by number of available work days in 5 years, usually around 250 days per year. (Don't use 365 days cause you want the jobs to pay for all equipment) Same for every piece of equipment, a per day expense number. Insurance goes to overhead and you need a daily rate of expense on overhead too. Then you can begin to quote like a pro and concentrate on your labour & material costs when quoting cause you know your equipment costs down to the day. Cheers 🇨🇦

If your can manage to gross 5G per day, times how ever many days we would be OK but not great. Foreman...me 40$/hour..lead hand 30$/hour...and laborer's 20$/hr...Plus materials....gone way,way up... 100G per month on one crew is just getting by. Thats a four man crew. $30/hour for labor seems cheap... some contractors up here in Alaska are charging $75.00/hour for labor (I just got a quote from one and that was their rate). And that was estimated separately from O&P (which covers insurance/bonding, workman's comp, and profit).

How about all the other corporate stuff we give up: Pension? Nope. 401 K match? Nope. Employee Healthcare? Nope Paid Vacation? Ya right. You could do a whole other video on what it takes to collect from clients. Those that chisel you down, ask for freebies, stall you for payments or change order agreements. You can still do good work for the wrong people and get shafted. Go to small claims, file a lien, all things legal approaches still cost you time and money. Keep at er Stan! Goodluck everyone.

Stan I think your a little short on labor cost especially you and Tim owners are worth way more than $30 per hr but it think your equipment amortization is a little high unless deducted in year one but over 7 years different which I prefer still taking advantage after equipment paid for. All works out in the end turned out great 👍
@Dirtmonkey
@Dirtmonkey 2 жыл бұрын
you are correct on both. I could never get a guy like Tim for $30 and hour. But its an easy number to use as a teaching lesson so others can understand their numbers a bit better. and the equipment cost breakdown was used to show these guys to start taking ALL the expenses of their company into consideration. New entreprenuers miss a whole lot when they are starting out.

When you mentioned $30 an hour you briefly mentioned taxes. This is the one most employees do not understand unless they have taken a business course. Then you have workers comp and in the North unemployment in the winter time. Every single state varies on the above. It's literally impossible to cover in one video.

small jobs suck. customers need as much if not more attention ( emails phone calls explanations ) and if you get jammed up it can stall the whole project (if Stan estimated 5k and they got jammed and had to come back day 2 the 2400 could easily goto 1000 or less) also most small projects the customers are more cost conscious. Large job if something jams there is somewhere else to do work while you unclogg jam example:( I forgot the pvc pipe, ok you go get the pipe we will stop the drainage and start the footer for the walk while your gone )

I think there are challenges to big and small projects alike. Example- BIG project- the customer turns out to be an @sshole. Now your stuck with them -or its rained out a few days- can't leave to do filler work. Big and little have their hassles

2400 bucks isn't bad for a days work, but the expenses to get there..... Holy Moses. That wall, though... It looks outstanding, man! Random question - if you're going to fill in a dip in your landscaping caused by a very terrible irrigation installer and you plan to seed it, should it be packed about the same level as what you added to that retaining wall, or maybe not quite as much? Judging by what I've been learning, if you do less, it'll just sink or run off with rain.. What's the balance there?
@Dirtmonkey
@Dirtmonkey 2 жыл бұрын
packing a lawn is a non-no basically- it means the seed will fight with the soil to get established. I would leave it a bit high and tell the customer they may have to add some materials after the seed starts if there is any uneven settlement

Excellent job. I have a question specifically related to how you calculate your overhead with regards to equipment cost. Is there a specific formula that you use to determine exactly how much you charge for the equipment/tools per job? Or do you have that cost included in your overhead as a flat fee versus a percentage of the job estimate? Hopefully that question made sense, haha.

Stan, do you find the loader is “softer’ on the turf than a skid steer?
@fuddmethen
@fuddmethen 2 жыл бұрын
there’s no way it’s not, it articulates to turn, rather than skidding to turn
@Dirtmonkey
@Dirtmonkey 2 жыл бұрын
It weighs about 3,000lbs so its lighter than most skiddy's. Uses special turf tires to distribute the weight of the machine and does about as much damage as a zero turn mower. It may not be softer but it sure doesn't leave a footprint or damage behind. This machine can work on ground where a skiddy would sink and tear it up.

You will NEVER see me without one. I love that little machine. NOW with that said. a skid loader will out work this machine. but it will also destroy everything around it as it does. This machine is so nimble on grass it just doesn't tear anything up.

Great vid Stan, wish you did a more comprehensive break down of equipment cost, maybe I look it the wrong way, but how exactly do you calculate a $58000 machine in to it? I have heard the concept thrown out there to calculate the life span of a skidsteer to 4000hrs, I have run an old 1845 with 8000hrs on it, and I have run a rubber tire back hoe that seemed completely trashed by 2000 hrs, then there is fuel, maintenace, rubber insurance, so is the machine calculated at an hourly cost based on that? or maybe a daily cost based on or around the monthly payment plus insurance, fuel ect? and how do you calculate the truck and trailer? or do you just lump sum all of your iron in to a daily or monthly overhead? any how thanks for the education and entertainment, love your content.

Ye I find it funny how people think $30-$40 dollars an hr is a lot of money, unless they did it and got a 1099 every year and had to pay 5 to 6 plus thousand dollars in taxes, not to mention you don't get 3 weeks paid vacation, paid time off, paid sick days, Holiday pay ,& you have to pay for your own Health insurance ($$$$$$$$) your own vehicle, your own fuel ($4.00 a gal )@ 12 mpg etc etc and let's say you do have a DBA as a sub and think your gonna do write offs ,there's not much to write off when your not buying materials ,and if you magically do come up with write offs and end up paying less to Uncle Sam, good luck buying a home when it shows you netted $15 to $20 thousand on the year...... so for everyone that thinks $30/$40 an hr is great money for trade labour in any of the Trades, give it a shot........by the way great job you guys killed it ,everything looks Beautiful 💯!!
