Back In NYC
Genesis 1975
"So you think I'm a tough kid?
Is that what you heard?
Yeah, well, I like to see some action
And it gets into my blood
The call me the trail blazer, Rael electric razor
I'm the pitcher in a chain gang, we don't believe in pain
'Cause we're only as strong, yes, we're only as strong
As the weakest link in the chain
Let me out of Pontiac when I was just seventeen
I had to get it out of me, if you know what I mean, what I mean
You say I must be crazy
'Cause I don't care who I hit, who I hit
But I know it's me that's hitting out
And I'm, I'm not full of shit
I don't care who I hurt, I don't care who I do wrong
This is your mess I'm stuck in, I really don't belong
When I take out my bottle, filled up high with gasoline
You can tell by the night fires where Rael has been, has been
You're sitting in your comfort you don't believe I'm real
You cannot buy protection from the way that I feel
Your progressive hypocrites hand out their trash
But it was mine in the first place, so I'll burn it to ash
And I've tasted all the strongest meats
And laid them down in colored sheets
Laid them down in colored sheets
Who needs illusion
Of love and affection
When you're out walking in the streets
With your mainline connection"

So let's talk about these three amps real quick and an in the room assessment. The UL is a very early build without the 1/2 power feature, Celestion 65, JJ tubes The 61 was just re-capped by me the day before this video with the same as the UL and a new 5Y3 rectifier (JJ), Celestion 65, RCA tubes The 58 has not been looked at yet and may need nothing. Old USA tubes and an original Jensen speaker. Now in the room the UL was the biggest sounding of the 3. In fact we adjusted some of the low end out. The NFB was a great option to clean up the sound if that would be needed for recording. The 61 Sounded great and I was able to sort out the farty bass like these amps are famous for. It was as quiet as a tweed cab be. We did kick up the treble some compared to the other two. The 58 most certainly sounded the smallest and had the most noise of all 3. The speaker sounded like it was ready to go. Pretty fizzy sadly. One thing is for sure, a Tweed Deluxe is an amp every player should have in their stable of gear, especially a session man. Uncle Larry also pointed out behind the scenes with me that recording an amp like these sounds way different than live which makes complete sense. Anyway, it is always fun hangin with my bud Larry and messing with gear and talking life. Cheers, Scank

Was the Jensen in the '58 a ceramic or alnico magnet. I think you started to say C12, but didnt finish the description. I believe the original would have been a P12R

@@scottculrichs P12R. In person it sounded like it was on its way out honestly. Real fizzy. I wanted to hear it with a really good Jensen and we will in the future. Also should have pointed all the amps directly at the camera LOL... It was a last minute rush video

Wow. This was awesome. I'll be honest, they all sound killer. Literally, every time he plugged into the next one I thought, "That's the one that does it." So, I guess the lesson is: It's in the hands - it's what the man/woman does with the instrument/amp, not the instrument or amp. They all sound killer as hell. If I had to pick a favorite, it'd be the middle boy. Cheers Larry. You are the man.

Hello Tom! And thanks for another great episode of Homeskoolin! It was so nice to hear your three 5e3’s and my favorite was the 58 Deluxe with the Jensen speaker. It is almost impossible to get hold of an old Fender Tweed Deluxe in Sweden where I live, so I did the best thing I could do and bought me Fender ´57 Custom Deluxe a couple of years ago. And I loved that amp from the beginning! I loved it so much I had to build a 5e3 kit (Nordstöm Audio, a Swedish brand) 6 months ago… a totally different beast but I love it even more. They are as different as your Uncle Larry 5e3 (my Custom 57 sounds like that) compared to your 58 with the original Jensen speaker. I am planning to build me another one... in a couple of months... Have a nice day Tom and keep up your good work!

I just built an Octal deluxe but instead of a dual triode like a 12AX7 or 6SL7 I used a 6SJ7 for one channel and 6SQ7 for the other with a 6SL7 for the second amplification stage and phase inverter. Boy does this thing have harmonic content. I was playing through my 57' 12" Magnavox speaker and then I just got a pair of 58'Jensen P10Q's that I may use in a cab. Tubes are a fun toy.
