The clone trooper narrating this sounds a little bit like even though he had to follow orders he feels some guilt and regret for having to do this. This shows that while they were made to blindly follow orders, they were still human.

I much preferred the "Mental Conditioning" concept over the Inhibitor Chips that the show gave us. I can see what Filoni was going for, and its still a neat concept, adding an almost existential horror to the Clones, but I still preferred the original idea of them knowing all along, even as they had no personal issues with the Jedi. A far more "Good Soldiers follow orders" explanation than the machine-made brain tumor.
@CecilyThanador11 ай бұрын
To be honest the chips were a kind off necessary addition because of how the clones and their relationship with the Jedi were portrayed in the newer media. Every clone having a complete individual personality wasn't really something in Legends: Commanders, ARC-troopers and some commandos started to have this but the basic troopers were way colder and also much more aggressive. Not quite flesh-robots as they still showed emotions. Their default behaviour was akin to Post-Chip-Activation-Clones we see in Bad Batch for example. The relationship with the Jedi was also way more strained. Some Jedi generals were more in line with Krell who is portrayed as an exception: Using the clones in a callously manner and some did not even see them as full beings. I would like the chips to have either a higher failure rate or simply being an emergency button. Someone like Bacara probably doesn't have any scruples against killing Ki-Adi-Mundi and doesn't need any chip. Meanwhile Commander Wolffe would probably resist the chip with all his being.
@dennis.edich19989 ай бұрын
I like the old Canon more as well. The majority of clones did not have personal contact with the their Jedi generals past maybe directly speaking regarding orders leading to a far weaker bond on average than what many people assume. This is primarily due to the Jedi propensity for emotional and Personal detachment, which the clones all took note of. Think of their relationships with the Jedi as being closer to Pong Krell than Anakin Skywalker or even Plo Koon. Than we add two more factors such as a lot of Jedi being illegal suited as generals and suffering inflated casualties because of it or being outright abusive of their troops and then the fact that the clones are heavily conditioned on both the genetic and upbringing levels to think a certain way and be loyal not to the Jedi but to the Republic meaning the Supreme Chancellor. This is reflected in the fact that ARC-troopers, who did not have the same conditioning done to them and were much purer copies of Jango Fett, had a tendency to refuse Order 66 at higher rates compared to Clone Commandos, who were subjected to the Standard array of mental conditioning. Then to put the cherry on top of this whole tragedy, the clones for as far as they knew, even the ones with Jedi they respected and cared for, with only few exceptions, legitimately thought the Jedi were conducting an unjust coup against the Republic and that what they were doing was for the greater safety of the institution they were born to defend. They didn't know Palpatine was a Sith, they didn't even know wtf that meant (what a Sith is at all) and they certainly didn't know the coup in question was little more than a posse of four Jedi masters going to deal with Palpatine. And this is a swallow dive into the reasons. And it is a much deeper conversation that places far more agency and meaning into each clone's decision to not follow the order than these stupid chips ever would.

@Berdo Gaan good argument but you could make a case that it actually makes them more complex. The clones new about order 66 as a contingency plan but never actually thought they would need to do it. While I do really like Temuera as the clones, Dee Bradley Baker will always be their voice to me. I don't think many people realize just how impressive his work on Clone Wars was. He voiced dozens upon dozens of clone characters, all of whom sound completely identical, and managed to make them feel like individual people people. The Umbara arc is pretty much just him sitting in a room talking to himself for four episodes straight while occasionally interacting with Dave Felloy (Krell's VA), but it feels like each clone is voiced by a separate person.

“How quiet it was” really sums up the empire’s plan. The entire prequel trilogy is Palpatine’s manipulation coming to a peak, the Republic was doomed from the start and they just didn’t know it. Revolution didn’t come with another war, or toppling the government. It already changed to the Empire under everyone’s nose. The massacre of the Jedi is something that got twisted by public view into a necessity rather than tying up loose ends.

A perfect representation of what the clones were, they were pawns of the Empire from the day they came out of the test tube, the war didn't matter, they just followed orders until the day came when they were given the only order that Palpatine cared about. To them it was just number 66 of the 150 preplanned orders, they didn't consider "why" they had that order planned, or discuss "what would you do if they ordered number 66 on our Jedi Gneeral?". It was an order, they would do it as ordered, and when the dust had settled and the bodies lay dead, the only excuse they needed they were "just following orders".

It would have been far more interesting to me, conceptually, for the Clone Troopers to be less the scrappy, dutiful, salt-of-the-earth little punks that they're constantly depicted as in Clone wars stuff. They're an army of warriors being bred to commit atrocities. For the Jedi, so peaceable and normally slow to violence, to have to interact and lead these strange, detached, warlike people solely loyal to the Republican government and the idea of sacrificing their lives in service of the state, could've been a very tense and unique dynamic. Nor would it need to be empty of nuance; there's plenty of room for stuff like this, the outliers who, even in spite of everything, weren't altogether comfortable with slaughtering their comrades and companions. They were all conscious of what they were about to do and why, and they did it anyway. It speaks to the real processes and obstructive contradictions of the behavioral and ideological conditioning employed by states and armies in their pursuit of ideal, obedient, intelligent killers. On a certain level the chip thing almost feels like, irresponsible. Of course the _soldiers_ don't hold any personal culpability for their acts of mass murder, it was all the command, look see they even put a little plot device in their heads that makes it that way. Soldiers are smart see, they make smart and good decisions because they are smart and good, because fighting and war and duty and sacrifice. It's a very American way of portraying war and organized violence tbf I guess fascist death squads don't sell as many toys as captain Rex
@michalk.9174 Жыл бұрын
@@kakroom3407 What you need to do (Assuming that you haven't) is to check out some pre-TCW legends content (AKA the clone wars multimedia project), the clones were depiced differently there. Much more ruthless and nowhere near as friendly towards the jedi. I remember that in the Star Wars: Republic comics, clones just fundamentally didn't understand the jedi, they thought that their pseudo-pacifist philosophy is absurd during a war. The few clones who bonded with the jedi only did so after the jedi impressed them in battle. There is one comic about Aylaa Secura teaming up with Quinlan Vos, who at this time she believes to be a traitor, and it's narrated from Captain Bly's perspective. It always stuck out to me because it shows how he views her, the jedi and the world. Sure, it's still not exactly what you said, old clones weren't cruel fascists, but it is definitely a more realistic depiction of what people who were literally bred for war would probably be like. It's a pity that the show completely overshadowed this version of the clone wars (and I do love the show as well, but it definitely simplified things and turned what was a surprisingly brutal and realistic war (for star wars standards) into something more kid friendly).

for me, this is canon. No stupid chip which controlled the clones decision and make them victims, so that some kids can sleep well at night, because their beloved CW heroes killed the Jedi. These men where created for that purpose: win the war and kill the jedi. Of course some would be conflicted to obey the order, because they formed a bond with the jedi, which put them in a diffiucult position. Do as you told and kill the jedi or desert and stand against your Brothers, who you knew all your life, who you fought with, who died by your side or even in your arms.

sure, you can see it that way an it's fine. I didn't see all of CW so I surley didn't saw all the moments with Cody and Kenobis relationship. But... isn't this a sweet tragedy. As he is commanded to execute Order 66, he lifted his head just a little, he hesitated for just a second before he answered to Palpatine. Now the second part of their lives, their purpose begins. Cody followed Kenobi a few moments with his eyes, then he does, what he was born for, kill the jedi. but hey, thats just my take on all this, i don't want to force my opinions onto others..and I was maybe a little harsh up there. During the waning hours of the Clone Wars a part of the 501st Legion was discretely transferred to the 332nd under the command of Ahsoka Tano, and sent to besiege the world of Mandalore. Our mission was simple: capture Darth Maul and return him to Republic custody on Coruscant. What we didn't know was that the Chancellor had other plans for us. Did we have any doubts? Any traitorous thoughts? Maybe. But no one said a word. After all, we were good soldiers. And good soldiers... follow orders. *** Remarkably, I managed to reach an escape pod and flee the Venator as the traitors Tano and Rex sent the rest of my brothers plummeting to their deaths. A part of me wishes I was with them. Those men were more than soldiers. They were my friends, my comrades, my brothers. This is a war game where you play a normal soldier. The prequels are movies about the fall of the Jedi and the Republic. Order 66 would probably seem to come out of nowhere and wouldn't make much sense. I much prefer this Legends plot of Order 66 to the new Canon "Inhibitor chip plot", here the Clones or at least the 501st know the endgame by Mygeeto. They know of the Chancellor's "Superlaser", they say "keeping Mundi in the dark wasn't easy". On Felucia they say about Ayla "wanted to make a point of seeing us all off personally, said we were the best damn soldiers she'd ever fought with, it was a good thing we were all wearing helmets... Because none of us could bear to look her in the eye..." This is all before Anakin even finds out about Sidious' real identity! the Clones knew the endgame before Anakin did! Just think about that, they really did knowingly betray the Jedi they fought side by side with for three years... They knew, they kept it from the Jedi, they played their part as 'Kingmakers' to bring about a New Order. One that the Clone in the campaign later proudly remarks will be an era of "Order and peace", the "Republic" Clone troopers are at the start of the Imperial era, the ones who first embraced the "Peace and Order" slogan of the Galactic Empire. (This is why I love Legends and absolutely love this old but golden game.) And it's all narrated by Temeura Morrison, wether playing as Boba or Jango Fett or a Clone trooper, he's just the coolest character on screen. Plays off betraying the Jedi as "just another day in the life of a Clone" in this Battlefront II campaign, it's why I loved it, you play the bad guy and the character himself knows it and likes it. "We did secretly enjoy putting down the odd uprising" or something along those lines, in the cutscene right before Naboo is conquered. They knew and they went along with it, even in the prequels it is shown or at least hinted: - When Cody is informed of Order 66, he says to the AT-TE to "blast him" referring to Kenobi scaling the cliff off to the side of the battle, that gun fires almost instantly after the order is given. It's already pointed in the direction of Kenobi and only needs to adjust slightly for elevation, it's aiming way off away from the battle, pointing at a bare cliff face only Kenobi is in that area. That gun was tracking Kenobi since he departed from Cody and his men, waiting for the signal, "Blast him" which is so casually delivered by Cody. -When Yoda is attacked by the two clones, one is off at the back and receives a communique from Sidious and addresses him literally by his Sith name not as "Chancellor", he then walks up to the scout trooper stood right behind Yoda and nods at him. The scout trooper is not given a communique, he would've been overheard by Yoda if he had been given one, the scout trooper is given no order by the one who did receive the communique, he's just given a nod. A signal, a que. Like they were briefed beforehand and the scout trooper was stood, waiting in position to take the shot, just waiting for the nod. It's just dark when you look at it that way... -Same as the Jedi on a speeder bike, the two (I believe) 91st Recon troopers on bikes accompanying her, look over to each other and nod like "yep I got the call, lets do it". If there were inhibitor chips, each clone would receive the order through their helmet and just act right then and there, not pre plan and co-ordinate and nod to each other in a scheming way. I think the Clones knew, through the final stages of the war, the last few months. I think they knew. At lot darker plot to the New Canon Inhibitor chips one. Also the Bad Batch's "battle of Kamino" is another point of New Canon I dislike, it is where Venators fly over the cloning city and just blow it up, betray the Kaminoans. Which I think is a weak plot to just paint the Empire as "wall to wall overtly so understandable a kid could get it", bad and evil. Can't we have a morally grey villain? Or does it have to be so black and white? Rebels pure good Empire pure evil?... I don't like how the animated shows portray the two sides of both the Clone Wars and Rebels, and is why I haven't watched much at all of each show. They are entertaining, but the story they build for the overarching plot leading into the original trilogies and the story of Star Wars as a whole just overwrites too much of the old story. "Creative liberties"... Whereas in Legends the Empire doesn't just blow the entire city to pieces, it's not even them who start the battle as such. The Kaminoans breed new batches of Clones to fight the Imperial clones and start an uprising. The Clones, now fighting as Stormtroopers but who are still the exact same veterans from the war underneath, are sent in to quietly and unofficially put down the uprising. They land on the planet and take over the city via ground assault, securing the advanced tech of the Kaminoans and retaining a usable city in the process. Instead of just blowing it up for the sake of "evil guys bad look we'll show you" - Standard Disney plot. Yeah they're evil, I can see that Disney, but you've made them absolutely dumb just like you did the droids and it makes the villains a pain to watch instead of being entertaining. It's cringe at times especially with the battle droids, "who can feel physical and emotional pain" (the droid giving up to Anakin saying it's hopeless in such a depressed way, the droid who gets his "eyes" scalded by steam and jumps back screaming "my eyes!" in pain...) It just makes me feel sorry for them and makes me want them to win because the "good guys" just abuse them like they're nothing and for a kids show it's just weird, the films never did stuff like that apart from R2 burning those two B2 battledroids alive aboard Grevious' ship. In the animated shows the good guys are written as such goofy 'goody goody two shoes' it annoys me because they, in the same breath as that, brush off decimating a Star Destroyer of twenty thousand crew or throwing a battledroid "with feelings" around the room like a ragdoll. Just abusing the enemy for a joke like it's nothing because "oh they're evil so who cares" -Standard Disney plot. Which is why I don't like the new animated shows and the new Canon stories they're making. They're just strange, they're entertaining, but when I analyse it there's a lot of stuff that just doesnt fit for how I imagine Star Wars to be. I suppose I should apologise to the animated show fanboys and girls, sorry kids, nothing personal.

Temuera Morrison knows how to narrate. The first part of this is so perfectly laced with emotion, it's extremely authentic emotion as well. He just sounds haunted by his own actions and what he saw, a man who is filled with remorse and plagued with guilt. Truly a gem of an actor.

I remember when during the Knightfall mission on the PS2, once Anakin came, there was a bug that would not allow him to use his lightsaber. The only way to get passed it was just use the lightsaber throw or just hope it didn't happen again.

I still prefer the severe cult-like indoctrination of the clones in the EU, as there was still accountability for the clones that definitely would have gone turncoat... as much as I love the Clone Wars show, the inhibitor chips just don't do it for me. What's better? To be irreversibly, uncontrollably evil, or to be able to change your evil ways and break out of your conditioning through sheer will and reasoning?

Instead of the chips the biggest tragedy used to be that the clones, despite being good friends with the Jedi, loved the Republic more, and even if they had those private traitorous thoughts they would never betray their brothers, their only family.

Star Wars fan Journal -Fall from Glory- What I remember about Disney's rise of power to Star Wars is... is how quiet it was. During the waning hours of Star Wars 1313 and another season of Clone Wars, George Lucas was discreetly transferred to Disney's headquarters. It was a silent trip. We all knew what he was about to do, what was about to happen. Did we have any doubts? Any private, traitorous thoughts? Perhaps, but no one said a word. Not on the year 2012, not when Lucasarts 2013 shut down, and not when we saw the trailer of the Force Awakens. Not a word. Present Day... With the fall of Star Wars and the elimination of the Better and superior stories of the Expanded Universe, Disney's rise to power was complete. In recognition of our service and loyalty to Mickey Mouse, the Franchise and direction were placed under the direct command of J.J. Abrams. Armed with Feminist Agendas, Political Correctness, and LGBTQ focused characters, our presence let the galaxy know that the days of the Old Star Wars were well and truly over. We were establishing a new era, an era of peace and happiness. An era of Disney's Star Wars...

Star Wars 3 Revenge of the Sith was the first movie I've seen of the franchise when I was child and remains my favorite to this day. Anakin's turn to the dark side and ultimate transformation into Darth Vader was epic. I had never seen a movie where the bad guys won. I never had found myself conflicted over the intentions and the evil methods to accomplish said intentions in a movie. Anakin wanted to prevent Padme's death, only for his fear and anger to make it a reality. The way Anakin betrayed everything he believed in for love. The way he killed children for love. The fall of the Jedi was tragic. The clones cold obedience to Order 66. To slaughter their Jedi allies their friends. And the music, The scores really sold everything. Anakin and Obi wan's final battle in mustafar remains one of the most epic battle I've ever seen. This journal and its brilliant voice over brings to mind the march to the Jedi temple.

The clones may have killed the Jedi, but it was Palpatine’s doings after saying “Execute Order 66”. It’s not the Clones’ faults that they were being enslaved by Palpatine’s commands.

@@hermos3602the clones were still slaves to the republic. A slave army. Just not in the way TCW presented them with the inhibitor-chips. The biggest difference in the EU is, that the clones were slaves their entire lives. They were genetically modified soldiers with only limited independence while in TCW they only really became slaves at the moment the inhibitor-chips started controlling them.
