Where have we seen this before? I stand by my statement. Old Gibsons were under stress when built. The sides on all Old Gibson Mandolins and Guitars are always pushing out!

That has to add difficulties to the job. I’ve seen many others’ repair videos; no one keeps us as involved as you do. You’re an expert craftsman, and we certainly appreciate watching! I looked it up and you're right about wetting the fretboard... Wood is most stable in terms of its length. When wood swells it does so laterally so wetting the fretboard would not cause a significant tightening against inserted frets. Some Luthers say that ebony holds on to frets moreso... than rosewood. 🤓

Wow listening to that after listening to the Rosa Massachusetts mandolin you auctioned off a week or so ago really illustrates how nice the Rosa sounded. The Rosa just sounded more even across all the frequencies, the Gibson here seemed to be more mid-focused. Whoever got that Rosa mandolin really scored something special!

@@dscdrkel5546 Do you mean as far as winching the cleat into place with tension? I remember the first time I saw the tuner winch demonstrated. It is truly ingenious. I don't do mandolins or instruments with F holes except rarely. I did do a Gibson L 50 for a friend who actually stepped on it and crushed it. Braces top everything smashed. I took the back so I could come close to fixing it right. That thing lost its mind and sprang out in every direction imaginable. I am still ashamed of some of the things I called that guitar, before I finally wiggled it back together. Since it was under such tension, I actually wondered would a splint in that crack on Jerry's mandolin have been a better option than forcing the crack together.

44:00 re: your use of the word "acrossed" - even as an English man I have no issue with this! I like the way some Americans butcher our beautiful language (lol!). It's like when you all drop the second "I" in the word "Aluminium", or add an "h" onto "height" making "heighth" (like length). I always say we are two countries separated by a common language! Seriously, I often joke with you guys over the pond, but it is all in jest! People shouldn't get bent out of shape over things like this - the world has FAR greater problems than this! As far as the work goes, as always I am knocked over by the things you can do at the speed you do them! Keep it up, Sir!

'Acrossed' or "acrosst"...I was an English major, but I never complain about the way Jerry talks. His verbal delivery is part of his style and charm, so, yes, I just go with it. However... I cut no slack with folks who try to be smarter than they are, like using 'multiple different'. 'Multiple different' means 'various'. The word 'LIKE' is not an adverb or adjective -- ever. QED

Ain't hindsight great? You can't always find the best or easiest solution in the heat of the moment, but the important part is to find a solution that is workable and will be good enough to do the job. Such as Torna A Surriento?(Come back to Sorrento)? Or Funiculi, Funicula? My Grandfather had an Album named, "Neapolitan Mandolins". Which he played every Sunday and Holiday when Family would come to visit. Funny though, as he was an Accordion Player. BTW, my family is Neapolitan, (Pratola Peligna), Abruzzo region. Thanks

Makes sense, that may be why so many necks had a problem twisting. Their necks are just doomed, design and all. They look nice, but if you drop it, a broken headstock is almost guarantied. I'm thinking of building a LP style guitar, I may put a fender style neck on it for that reason.
